The Electricity Transmission company of Kenya Ketraco has signed a contract over $239million with a Chinese company for the electrification of the railway connection between the port city of Mombasa and Nairobi in Kenya.

The contract is to electrify the railway connection with power from a nearby transmission line connecting Mombasa and Nairobi which started transmission in August 2017.

In the statement by Ketraco, it is reported that the power for the Standard Gauge Railway connection, will be provided by geothermal power plants. With a further connection planned to then connect Nairobi with Naivasha, where most of the geothermal plants of Kenya are located, this could provide a great economic development incentive. At Naivasha, KenGen and partners are planning an industrial zone that could utilise geothermal power of the nearby geothermal plants, but also geothermal direct use opportunities.

It is expected that the electrification will take up to 28 months, or about 2.5 years.

They are well planned for. Do you think they'll budget for electrification without factoring in the locomotives for compatibility?
Uwe unatumia akili kufikiria acha ushabiki sometimes. How can they be well planned?, they bought enough number of diesel engine trains, if they are going to buy another set of electric engine trains, that means you will have twice number of trains than what is needed, is this what you mean well planned?

I see desparation.
Desparation? What do you mean? My friend, am sorry to burst your bubble but Tanzania factors nowhere in Kenya's decision making! We have our own plans and deadlines to meet. Some of this things were planned waaay back under Kenya's vision 2030. I mean, Tz doesn't even have a functioning SGR! Wake up!

No new locomotives will have to be purchased. The current ones are actually "diesel-electric" meaning they are primarily driven by electric motors that get the power from diesel engines.

During electrification, all they need to do is attach overhead pantographs to tap straight into the electricity from overhead cables.

This will eliminate the use of the diesel engines, although common practice is that the diesel engines will not be removed, but still be retained for emergency purposes.

Hahahahaha go and tell you colleagues at Kibera, we are much better informed than you idiots. That technology is not yet born in this World, lets wait when Kibera gets its own independence to become Republic of Kebera may be that techolodge will be inverted from Kibera[emoji38] [emoji38] [emoji38]

Magufuli hoyeeee.
