Geita greenstone belt has been the most productive in Tanzania with continuous history for both small and larger Gold exploration and mining since 1900 to the present. A German Gold prospector discovered the mineral in the early 1900s in the hills surrounding modern-day Geita town. This and other discoveries triggered a Gold rush, attracting German and native prospectors alike. Between 1936 and 1966, The Geita Gold Mines Ltd, made up the largest Gold operation in East Africa. Gold rushes continue to occur in areas surrounding Geita, in and around but small scale Gold rush flourish 1980s, in 1988 Mgusu Gold rush took place, followed by Rwamagasa and Matabe.

In recent undiscovered for larger Mines show maturity exploration in the belt and this paving an alternative for small and medium mining. Several Prospecting licence grated along the greenstone belt of Geita to foreign companies since 1990s. Problem with small quantity of Gold discover by larger miner is the paving way of the belt to medium miners. But artisanal and small scale miners should turn to medium miner by strengthening through venture capital within them due several problems they experiencing in individual working.
