Nimeweza kupata fursa ya kuongea na wataalamu wa serikalini ambao walifanyia uchunguzi sampuli zilizotoka huko na wanasema ni kweli kuna viwango vikubwa vya kemikali kwenye mazingira na ambavyo vinachangiwa na uwepo wa mgodi ule. Ingawa kuna kiwango kikubwa pia cha zebaki (mercury) ambayo ilitumiwa na wachimbaji wadogo wa dhahabu na udongo huo (tailings) ukiingizwa kwenye mchakato wa Cyanide unaotumiwa na Mgodi huo matao ni komaundi za ajabu na hatari zaidi hutokea. Nikikumbuka maneno ya Teweli wa barrick alisema pH (kwa wasiojua chemistry nimewatimulia vumbi hapa) iko kwa wastani wa 7 ambayo ni kawaida kwa maji lakini kemikali zinazozuru pia zinaweza kuwa nyingi tu ingawa pH inaonesha hivyo kwa kuwa inaonesha kiwango cha haidrojen ion lakini other poisonous ions may pe present in hazardous levels pia.

Nawaomba sana wanasiasa walio serikalini na wabunge wetu, kwenye suala la mazingira na sheria ya mazingira iko wazi kabisa kuwa anayechafua mazingira agharimie na asafishe (Polluter Pay principal) nashangaa sana kuona serikali, ofisi ya makamu wa raisi idara ya mazingira ikiwa na mtoto wake NEMC wapo kimya kwenye hili. je sheria yetu mpya hii mnashindwa kuosimamia?

Inakuwaje nafasi ya kukaimu ukurugenzi katika idara hiyo amepewa yule ambaye ni bosi wa EPMS ambaye nakitafuta cheo hicho kwa udi na uvumba kiasi haelewani kabisa na yule Dr aiyekuwa ofisi ile akapewa ukatibu mkuu wizara nyingine. waziri utakosea sana kumpa huyo jamaa ukurugenzi kwani wafanyakazi wengi idara hiyo watakimbia ama kuacha kazi. I will not stoop to your level of abuse. And JF is not a forum for abuse, open discussion and I aired my views. Do not think you can use intimidation in such forum by being abusive language.

Please use abuse to those you have no respect for but respect view points of others.
 
Nakumbuka kuna kipindi nilikuwa Ashanti Goldfields in Geita na nilishuhudia ushenzi huu first hand. Kuna siku niliwekwa shift ya usiku na supervisor mmoja mghana na kwa bahati mbaya maji, wenyewe wanaita slurry, ambayo ni mchanganyiko wa Cyanide , Maji na Activated carbon ilioverflow na kumwagika kwenye mpaka chini huko kwenye maji ya wanakijiji. Waliita special team kuweka udongo na yule Mghana alipewa tiketi ya kurudi nyumbani kesho yake.

Wajamii, cyanide(hydrogen cyanide) is a dangerouus chemical and it should be handled with caution. Nawaonea hawa watu huruma kwa sababu kama miili yao kwa nje hiko hivi wewe unategemea organs zao zitakuwaje ? These people should file a lawsuit against this company .

I have worked in mining companies before and I can say with confidence that tailing dams- water seepage is not the only culprit in this scenario; one should look into the possibility that the cause might be slurry overflow from the clarifier. Mind you, the cyanide concentrations in those clarifiers are much higher compared to the one in tailing dams.


What needs to be done is to collect water from Wanakijiji receiving streams near the mining and do a thorough analysis on its contents i.e heavy metals, cyanide, base neutral and acid as well as volatiles. We should thereafter run another test on another receiving stream that is far from the mining and make a comparison with the former.

The government must intervene and do a thorough investigation on this this mining company. Another thing that we should look at is whether these mining companies are required to have pre-treatment program before discharging their slurry to the tailing dam. It is imperative to understand that simply because you have a tailing dam you can discharge whatever you want in there, the slurry pH must be within a certain parameters before discharging.

At the end of the day, our government must establish standards and also start policing these companies.

Greetings from North Mara in Tarime.​

I wish to share with you some photos of the current situation in North Mara. Rev. Magafu and I have been assessing and identifying the victims of the last year's and ongoing waste ponds spillage at North Mara gold mine.​

New cases of the victims are coming up with symptoms that are vivid and the situation is alarming. Two cases, though, needs immediate medical attention and action. This involves Mama Otaigo from Weigita village and Paul (8 year old boy) from Nkerege village.​

The situation we have found them in is far different from when we met them during the health screening done in January 7th 2010. Their health state is deteriorating from day to day. I am attaching their current photos for your review.​

As the governments still remains silent on this matter attempts to get referral letters from government health facilities have proved abortive and therefore we need to act as soon as possible to save the lives of those who are critically ill.​

An appeal is made to all of you to act in your different capacities.​
