- The virus known as HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) attacks and destroys CD4 T-cells in the body's immune system. Untreated, it impairs the body's defences against common infections and illnesses, ultimately leading to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome).
Claim:
HIV can be spread through kissing.
What Scientific Proof Says:
Normal, casual, or deep (French) kissing does not transmit HIV. This is because saliva does not contain enough of the virus to cause an infection, and it contains natural enzymes and proteins that break down HIV.
Transmission is theoretically possible only in extremely rare circumstances where both partners have severe active bleeding in the mouth (such as heavy gum bleeding, open cuts, or large sores) and a significant amount of blood from the HIV-positive partner directly enters the bloodstream of the HIV-negative partner. Saliva itself still does not transmit the virus in this scenario; only the direct mixing of visible blood would present a risk.
Verdict:
HIV is not transmitted through kissing
