Really? There can only be a big bang if there is matter (or energy?).
Question: Where did the first matter and/or energy come from? Or rather how did the first matter and/or energy start?

Actually, what initiated the creation of the universe, or what came before the Big bang or even what lies outside the universe is unknown. We know that, after its expansion from a singularity, the universe cooled sufficiently to allow energy to be converted into various subatomic particles, including protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and neutrons combined (fused) to form the atomic nuclei only a few minutes after the Big bang.
