AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli congratulated his side for their sensational comeback against Juventus and the spirit they showed in testing times.

Milan produced a stunning second-half comeback at San Siro on Tuesday night as they recovered from 2-0 down to beat the league-leaders 4-2.

After a goalless first half it looked as though the Bianconeri would secure a seventh straight win over Milan as Adrien Rabiot and Cristiano Ronaldo struck before the hour mark.

The Rossoneri roared back however, netting three times in just over five minutes through a Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty and two excellent strikes from Franck Kessie and Rafael Leao.

Ante Rebic had the final say in a thrilling encounter as he continued his ridiculous run of form and Milan won to rise into fifth above both Roma and Sunday’s opponents Napoli.

Pioli was interviewed by DAZN after the game, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews.

“I congratulate my players, they are showing an incredible spirit, even from the difficulties there is a desire to react, they have been rewarded by a great result and a great victory,” he said.

“We have carried out our ideas to achieve an important goal, until recently the ranking did not reflect our qualities, we got back together, the team is doing well above all mentally.

“We have not done anything yet, the next games will be very demanding, we must immediately think of Napoli. Satisfaction yes but also concentration, we must stay on the spot. If possible we must also improve, in the past we paid duties and learned from our mistakes.”

On his future: “I am not thinking at all about August 3, I am thinking about the match against Napoli. We have become a team, we know each other well.

“I am not thinking about what will happen on August 3 because I am too happy with the team, what will be will be, I am not worried about what my future will be. It would not be right to take away satisfaction for the work we are doing.

“I expect to finish the season well and to hit the goal for which we have been called. We have also had delicate moments, sometimes we have not managed to collect important results.

“My desire is to coach, I like what I do, I found a team that I am fine with, then we will see what it will be on August 3. I am not thinking about my future, the expenditure of energy is important, I cannot spend energy to think about situations that don’t depend only on me.”

On the physical condition of the squad: “The work of the staff was also important during the lockdown, even in precarious conditions the players never missed the collective sessions, even those who only had a treadmill or an exercise bike.

“The team now knows each other more, they have a proactive attitude even when they are defending. Anything can happen and we must still be very careful, the opponents that await us are only difficult.”

On the comeback: “We were good at exploiting the penalty incident, from there we found conviction. Sorry for the goals we conceded, we could defend much better. In the first half we were good on the field, the game was balanced. We were surprised on the first goal and also on the second we had to defend better.”

Zlatan Ibrahimović has had a hand in eight goals in nine games as a starter with #ACMilan this season (five goals, three assists).

*Ibrahimovic: 'Read between the lines'*

Zlatan Ibrahimovic joked he is ‘President, player and coach’ at Milan, discussed his age and fitness levels, but dropped hints on his future. ‘Read between the lines.’

The 38-year-old converted a penalty in this evening’s 4-2 thriller against Juventus, sparking the comeback from 2-0 down.

“I’m old, that’s no secret! Age is just a number. I am working well, getting a good balance, I played more today than the last game. I feel good, to be honest, and I am trying to help the team in every way,” he told DAZN.

He then sat on the bench and gave advice non-stop to his teammates, so is he preparing for life as a coach?

“I am President, player and coach! The only negative is that I only get paid for being a player! If I had been here from the first day of the season, then we would’ve won the Scudetto.”

He was asked if he would remain at Milan next season, but shrugged off the question.

“We’ll see, we’ll see. There is a month still to enjoy myself, but there is a strange situation going on and we are not in control of that.

“I don’t know if the fans have seen me live for the last time. It could well be, yes. Why? Read between the lines… It’s strange playing behind closed doors, as if San Siro had been a full house, it would’ve been wonderful tonight.

“I am really enjoying myself at Milan, as I went to America, I got injured, I wanted to feel alive. I’m 38 years old, I don’t have the physique that I had, but I am smart about it. I don’t try to do the same things I did when I was 20.

“If I don’t make the difference, then I don’t like that. I am not here to be a mascot. I am here to help my teammates, club and fans.”

Milan hosted Juventus on Tuesday evening in a game in which the Rossoneri finally managed to win against their rivals.

They did so in brilliant fashion too, overcoming a two-goal deficit to win 4-2 thanks to four goals in 18 minutes and moving into fifth place, albeit temporarily as Roma and Napoli have a game in hand.

After huge wins against Roma, Lazio and now Juventus, a lot of the players look reborn and so does the team in general. As a whole, all the players had a good night with maybe the exclusion of Romagnoli who was in fault for both goals.

Positive substitutions in the second half also had a big impact on the game as Calhanoglu brought creativity, while Leao notched another goal to complete the comeback.

But in the bigger picture the players finally started playing like a team and the last games reflect that showing just how capable they are.

The future looks bright for Milan as they need little to be competitive next season but most importantly they need a long term project, no managerial changes and a healthy environment so the players can flourish.

Here are five things we learned…

1. Forward on fire
Everyone is seemingly praising Ante Rebic – praise he thoroughly deserves as he bagged yet another goal and assist last night.

However, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rafael Leao have been bringing some fire power as well. We all know what the Swede is capable of even at the age of thirty-eight and his stats do not fail to impress.

Leao has bagged three goals since the restart of Serie A which may not seem like a lot, but the Portuguese youngster has been coming off the bench as the red hot Rebic and Zlatan are keeping him out of the starting XI.

With many wondering who will replace the Swede in case of an exit, we can rest easy knowing goals can come from other sources.

2. Motoring along
Milan are on an impressive run and it is only a shame that the season started in such a bad way for the team. On a positive note, the Rossoneri have showed massive improvements since the start of the year in terms of results and in terms of individual and team performances.

The football they play now is entertaining and it has not been entertaining for a long period of time. Hopefully this will continue until the end of the season and we see more and more what each and every one of the players is capable of, and when the long term project is in place things may get even better.

3. A performance at last
The right-back spot has been identified as Milan’s biggest problem area this season so far, but at last we saw a positive performance by Andrea Conti as the Italian looked a little bit like his old self.

Conti managed to keep Ronaldo fairly quiet throughout the game as the red-hot Portuguese striker was not a big threat before he moved more central.

We saw a warrior’s performance by the former Atalanta man which if he could build on would be a massive boost for the management as there will be a lot of focus on the right-back position and potential signings – with Pierre Kalulu already through the door.

4. Just can’t get enough
Ismael Bennacer and Franck Kessie have done it once again, and what a partnership they have formed. The Algerian took the weight on his shoulders of being the more creative of the two, controlling the game from the back and going forward.

Meanwhile Kessie once again was a tank in the midfield recovering the ball on numerous occasions and winning virtually every physical dual he went into. The Ivorian actually ended up with a goal to his name and showed a bit of his passing abilities.

And what can we say about Bennacer. A stunning performance against Italy’s current best. He was shaking off the opposition with ease and his sharp passes were able to get Milan off Juventus’s pressing.

There is no battle either wouldn’t fancy at the moment, and it raises questions about whether spending big money on Tiemoue Bakayoko or Sandro Tonali is really needed.

5. Thank you Gigio

In a game in which Donnarumma conceded twice it may seem silly to mention him, but the 21-year-old more than compensated for that with a brilliant save on Rugani’s header to prevent Juventus coming back into the game.

It was a world class reaction by a world class goalkeeper as he kept our lead safe and sound. Fans actually haven’t given him the credit he deserves recently as he is also the keeper with the most clean sheets in Serie A, so his performances must be cherished while we all hope his future is red and black
