Serie A preview: Cagliari vs. AC Milan – Team news, opposition insight, stats and more
By Oliver Fisher - 17 January 2021, 21:27
AC Milan travel to face Cagliari on Monday night knowing that a win would ensure they are top at the halfway stage of the season.

There has been a hive of activity surrounding the club in recent days as Soualiho Meite signed on Friday with Mario Mandzukic and Fikayo Tomori set to follow, though it is marred by an undercurrent of bad luck in terms of selection problems.

Stefano Pioli said in his pre-match press conference that he is expecting his team to rise to the challenge in the face of adversity, but it will not be an easy trip.

Game date: Monday 18 January
Kick-off time: 20:45 (CET)
Venue: Sardegna Arena
Referee: Rosario Abisso

Team news
Milan will leave for Sardinia without the suspended Rafael Leao, the injured duo of Matteo Gabbia and Ismael Bennacer, plus the COVID-positive quartet of Rade Krunic, Ante Rebic, Hakan Calhanoglu and Theo Hernandez.

Pioli though will be able to console himself with the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the starting XI and with the return of Alexis Saelemaekers on the right wing.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive), Gianluigi Donnarumma will be in goal protected by a back four of Davide Calabria, Simon Kjaer, Alessio Romagnoli and Diogo Dalot, with Franck Kessie and Sandro Tonali ahead of them.

Samu Castillejo, Brahim Diaz and Jens Petter Hauge will make up the trio supporting Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the paper reports.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Dalot; Kessie, Tonali; Castillejo, Diaz, Hauge; Ibrahimovic.

The opponents
Cagliari had a mixed start to the season under Eusebio Di Francesco, but things have started to unravel and they are sliding down the table fast.

They won three of their first seven games to climb up to 11th, but are yet to win since the seventh round and are now in 16th position having lost their last four games.

It has been at the defensive end that the Islanders have struggled having let in 34 goals, a tally better only than the bottom three sides in the league.

Di Francesco has some selection problems of his own as Marko Rog out for the season, Paolo Farago and Zito Luvumbo are both injured, while centre-back duo Ragnar Klavan and Andrea Carboni are still COVID-positive.

Nahitan Nandez will also miss out after his red card in the damaging defeat to Benevento, which means they could line up as follows…

Probable Cagliari XI (4-2-3-1): Cragno; Zappa, Godin, Walukiewicz, Lykogiannis; Nainggolan, Marin; Sottil, Pedro, Ounas; Simeone

Head to head
There aren’t many teams in Serie A that the Rossoneri have a better head-to-head record against. In fact, in the 25 most previous encounters between the two sides, the Rossoneri have won 20 games, lost one and drawn four.

The two clubs last faced each other in the last game of last season with Milan running out 3-0 winners at San Siro, while the reverse fixture earlier that year also saw the Diavolo win and keep a clean sheet as Rafael Leao and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – scoring his first goal since his return – netted in a 2-0 win.

Match facts (via Forza Italian Football):

➤ Milan have won the most games against Cagliari in Serie A: 42 out of 76 (W8, D26) and 24 of these since 2004/05.

➤ Milan have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three league matches against Cagliari: against no team currently in the competition are the Rossoneri on a longer such run without conceding a goal.

➤ Cagliari have won only one of their last 16 home games against Milan in Serie A (D6, L9): 2-1 in May 2017 under Massimo Rastelli.

➤ Cagliari have lost each of their last four Serie A matches; the last time they went on a longer such streak in the competition under a single coach was in January 2013 (six with Ivo Pulga).

➤ Milan have scored in each of their last 18 away league games; only once have they gone on a longer streak on the road in their Serie A history: 19 between March 1992 and April 1993.

Eusebio Di Francesco spoke on the eve of the match between Cagliari against AC Milan during the press conference and this is what he said about the AC Milan squad and Stefano Pioli‘s work:

“We will try to put Milan in difficulty, we are preparing for the match in the right way. Pioli did an excellent job, Milan have built a real team, with great cohesion of intentions, who work well together, and have one player above all called Ibrahimovic. Zlatan is unique, he also centralizes the way he plays, at least this is what data and statistics say, they search for him often and we will have to remove the sources of play for him.”

AC Milan trying to block Dutch striker for the summer
Posted on January 17, 2021 by Rossonero

AC Milan are considering a summer move for Donyell Malen. The PSV Eindhoven star is in fine form this season.
Even yesterday Donyell Malen was again decisive with a goal and an assist in PSV Eindhoven’s 5-3 win against Sparta Rotterdam. The young Netherlands striker has not stopped scoring since returning from an injury. The 21-year-old centre forward has been devastading so far scoring 17 goals and providing 7 assists.

The PSV Eindhoven star has a market value of 40 million euros and has been linked with a move to AC Milan in the past. Apparently the Rossoneri are keeping a close eye on him regarding a summer transfer reports Soccernews.nl.

Malen’s is represented by Mino Raiola and the Dutch agent offered the PSV striker to AC Milan in 2019 but at that time the Rososneri were covered with Krzysztof Piatek and were not considering new signings. Now a potential move is being discussed again.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was the only centre forward available to Stefano Pioli but he will be joined soon by Mario Mandzukic. The permanence of both is not guaranteed for next season and the management is already planning for the future.

Nevertheless, interest is Donyell Malen is not low. Borussia Dortmund are looking at Malen as an ideal signing if either Haaland or Sancho leaves in the summer.

Milan have tabled a contract offer to Marseille winger Florian Thauvin amid an ultimatum from his club, according to a report.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via Calciomercato.com) writes that the president of the Ligue 1 has given an ultimatum to the French winger regarding the renewal of his contract.

The 27-year-old has 24 hours to make a decision on his future, and the Rossoneri are in pole position to secure the signing of the wide man ahead of next season.

In fact, they have even made a contract offer: four-years at €2.8million net per season, therefore a total financial commitment of just over €11m or €22m gross.

It comes after RMC Sport (via GFFN) reported last night that Marseille’s president Jacques-Henri Eyraud lambasted the squad after Saturday’s defeat to relegation-battling Nîmes, issuing an ultimatum to all players who will be out of contract in the summer regarding their professionalism and commitment to the club.

AC Milan has announced a new multi-year global partnership with socios.com. The deal includes plans to launch an $ACM Fan Token on the popular platform in the coming weeks.

The new partnership is aiming to increase the digital presence of the club and be even closer to the fans online, especially during this global health crisis.

As an innovative Club, one of our focus areas is modernization and this partnership helps us complete another important step in that direction.”

AC Milan is actively searching for reinforcements to solidify the team’s performances in the hopes to stay as high as possible in the Serie A standings.

Among the opportunities that Milan could take to reinforce the squad for next season is the possible signing Florian Thauvin from Olympique Marseille.

According to the latest information Tuttosport, Olympique de Marseille’s president has issued an ulitimatum to Florian Thauvin regarding the renewal of the contract: the winger has 24 hours to make his decision. AC Milan follows with care and is in pole position to sign the player with an offer of €2.8 million per season.

Milan have made a pre-contract offer to Porto midfielder Otavio as it would be a free transfer at the end of the season. According to Bruno Andrade, who works for A Bola, Milan have offered him a four-year deal worth €1.5m per year. His contract will expire in the summer and Milan have already given a contract offer for him.

Milan hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic said he’s ‘happy’ about Mario Mandzukic’s arrival and admitted the youngsters ‘motivate’ him after another brace against Cagliari.

The Swede scored twice to give the Rossoneri a 2-0 win in Sardinia, and after the match he revealed to Sky Sport Italia that it was a difficult game.

“I had to do another one,” he said. “It took two to win. It was a difficult game.

“I didn’t play for 57 days, I’m sorry. It can happen.”

Alexis Saelemaekers was sent off after 74 minutes and gave Milan a scare towards the end, as Cagliari kept pushing for a comeback.

“In one less, it’s not easy to play against a team which it’s already hard to play against.”

The talisman was supported by a young attacking trident in the absence of Hakan Calhanoglu, but he said the youngsters keep motivating him to do more.

“Young people motivate me, they challenge me to see who runs more,” he added. “I don’t give up and show that I can run like them.

“We are doing well, we are almost halfway through the championship. Now, the most difficult games are starting.

“It will be a very tough programme, but with Mandzukic, [Soualiho] Meite, I don’t know if more people will arrive.”

On Mandzukic he said: “I’m happy, we now have two that scare our opponents.”

Zlatan had previously said he believes Milan should aim to win the Scudetto and dream big, but when asked if he believes in the championship, he replied: “I believe in Zlatan.”

The reporter asked the usual question about the possible renewal with Milan.

“It depends on him, on Paolo [Maldini]. I’m very happy at Milan. This return to Milan has changed me a lot. I’m very happy.”
