CM: Milan scout RC Lens defensive duo and midfielder as doubts over Romagnoli continue
By Oliver Fisher - 15 February 2021, 13:49
AC Milan had scouts at RC Lens’ game over the weekend as Alessio Romagnoli continues to remain in the firing line, a report claims.

The Rossoneri didn’t do anything right in the game against Spezia on Saturday night, failing to register a shot on target or defend with their usual resilience as they slumped to a 2-0 defeat and surrendered top spot to Inter in the process.

As Calciomercato.com reports, Alessio Romagnoli has been in the crosshairs of critics in the past and now the captain is under fire again after another performance against a team that posed challenges and ultimately there was no answer to.

The outlet describes it as a matter of personality and ability to read moments of difficulty have prevented Romagnoli from reaching the level of the top Italian central defenders in recent years.

Not even Fikayo Tomori’s arrival in January has definitively filled one of the gaps identified in recent months by Maldini and Massara.

The fact Simon Kjaer is almost 32 and keeps suffering injuries plus the delicate contractual situation of his partner Romagnoli – who is expiring in 2022 and has Raiola as his agent – means that the scouting network are on the lookout again.

Tomori could still stay and Milan will make their assessments on the €30m buy-out option, while Milan are also looking to other profiles ready for the immediate but with an eye to the future.

Scouts followed the Ligue 1 match between Reims and Lens with great attention, in particular the two central defensive players Loic Badé and the Argentine Facundo Medina.

Not only that, but the report concludes by claiming that Cheick Doucoure was also watched in addition to the aforementioned duo.

#ACMilan have fail to win any of the 6 games in which they have trailed this season in Serie A.

There have been 3 draws against Hellas Verona, Parma and Genoa, while 3 defeats came against Juventus, Atalanta and Spezia.

Milan’s owners Elliott have so far preferred a recruitment strategy centered around buying young players with high potential to develop and record capital gains on the balance sheet.

A look down the list of signings since their arrival says everything: Theo Hernandez, Ismael Bennacer, Rade Krunic, Leo Duarte, Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic joined in summer 2019 – the oldest being 25 at the time.

Sandro Tonali (20), Brahim Diaz (21), Diogo Dalot (21) and Jens Petter Hauge (20) arrived last summer, while Fikayo Tomori (23) was another injection of youth in the recent winter window.

Gazidis gave a long interview to Grant Wahl on the “Fútbol” podcast, with his statements transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

He was asked by Wahl: “What are your strategies for making Milan grow from a sporting point of view?”

Gazidis replied: “We came to a club that was in a really bad financial situation. The revenues have remained the same for a long time while the other clubs also grew from this point of view, and at the same time the costs have grown leading to really important losses.

Fikayo Tomori joined AC Milan on loan in January and although there is a clause for the England international to stay in Milan permanently, he says it’s “for the clubs to decide” where he ends up:
The day after Tomori completed his move to Milan, Lampard was sacked and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.
But Tomori says his focus since the switch to Italy has been all about Milan.
“There was nothing much to think really. Once I switched to Milan it was all about Milan. Whatever happens at Chelsea, happens at Chelsea.”
It could be an important few months for Tomori on the international scene, too. Euro 2020 is due to take place this summer and after making his England debut in November 2019 it’s something he would like to be aiming towards:
“I’d be lying if I said I’m not thinking about it, of course I am. But at the moment I’m taking it game by game, week by week and hopefully at the end of the season I have a Scudetto and I’m in the England squad.”
Tomori also discussed the danger of social media with racism:
“With social media being so accessible to everyone, someone can make a fake account within five minutes and go there to spout racist abuse because someone made a mistake in the game,”
“Being able to identify someone who is doing these wrong things and punish them, make an example of them, is only going to help.”
“If someone robs a bank you know they’re punished. If someone is racist, they should be punished so those kinds of steps need to be made.”
