Calhanoglu closer to Milan deal

Hakan Calhanoglu took another step towards agreeing a new contract with Milan after a meeting at the club headquarters this evening.

Sky Sport Italia report the midfielder was spotted at Casa Milan for an encounter with directors, although his agent was not present.

It’s believed they are taking further steps towards reaching an agreement on a new contract.

The gap between demand and offer has been diminished, and could be resolved using easy to achieve bonuses.

Both parties said they were ‘cautiously optimistic’ after last week’s encounter.

Time is running out, because Calhanoglu will be a free agent on July 1, but he seems eager to remain at San Siro, far more than he was a few months ago.

AC Milan are continuing to consider a move for Torino striker Andrea Belotti and are even willing to make a sizeable offer, according to a report.

Corriere Granata – part of the TMW network – reports how Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s main attacking partner for next season could be none other than Belotti. The Rossoneri are getting closer and closer to securing a return to the Champions League, and from this they hope to have a base to attract players and bolster the squad.

Torino president Urbano Cairo made it clear last week that he is ready to try and secure the renewal of Belotti, whose current deal expires in June 2022. Even if they avoid relegation comfortably, allowing Belotti to prepare at a more relaxed pace for the European Championships in June and July, the moment has arrived for the captain to make step forward in his career.

The report adds that Milan are willing to put around €30m on the table for the 27-year-old which appears a ‘plausible and rather realistic figure’. Il Toro did not sell him when they could have got almost double, but they enjoyed his services for many more years.

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli is set to make five changes to the starting XI to face Udinese compared to the line-up that beat Roma.

Milan will be looking to plant themselves even more strongly inside the top four places when they host Udinese on Wednesday night. The Rossoneri got back to winning ways on Sunday night after two consecutive defeats in Serie A, emerging 2-1 victors over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in what was a huge win for the team’s top four hopes.

According to the latest from MilanNews, a back four of Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Alessio Romagnoli and Theo Hernandez will be in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma from right to left.

Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie will be the double pivot, with Samu Castillejo, Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic acting behind the centre-forward Rafael Leao.

The big story therefore is that Tomori would sit on the bench again in place of the captain Romagnoli.

Probably Milan XI (4-2-3-1): G. Donnarumma; Kalulu, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Kessie, Tonali; Castillejo, Brahim Diaz, Rebic; Leao.

AC Milan could be part of a five-team shootout to land Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard, according to a report.

Milan were heavily linked with a move for Edouard during the January transfer window, but a number of reports both from Scotland and in Italy claimed that Celtic wanted €30million for his sale, a bit too much for the Rossoneri.

According to TMW, the competition for Milan to battle with ahead of the summer has increased as the young Frenchman is attracting interest from a number of different clubs. The report mentions Arsenal and Roma, but also now Aston Villa and above all Leicester.

The Foxes are coached by Brendan Rodgers, who knows the striker very well since he coached him during his time at Celtic. In short, there are many suitors for the player, meaning in the summer there will probably be a real auction to grab the striker who has 20 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions this season.

AC Milan will be looking to plant themselves even more strongly inside the top four places when they host mid-table side Udinese on Wednesday night.

The Rossoneri got back to winning ways on Sunday night after two consecutive defeats in Serie A, emerging 2-1 victors over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in what was a huge win for the team’s top four hopes.

Stefano Pioli revealed in his pre-match press conference that he is expecting a battle from Luca Gotti’s side, with some selection dilemmas still to resolve.

Game date: Wednesday 3 March
Kick-off time: 20:45 (CET)
Venue: San Siro
Referee: Davide Massa

Team news
Milan’s victory against Roma came at a cost as Ante Rebic, Hakan Calhanoglu and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all came off with muscle problems. Rebic will be available for the game against the Friulians, but Calhanoglu will miss at least two games and Ibrahimovic four or more. Mario Mandzukic will not return for ten days, while Bennacer also will not be risked.

Sky Italia report the Milan team that Pioli could field against Udinese. A back four of Pierre Kalulu, Simon Kjaer, Alessio Romagnoli and Theo Hernandez will be in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie will be the double pivot, with Samu Castillejo, Brahim Diaz and Ante Rebic acting behind the centre-forward Rafael Leao.

The big headline from that is of course that Tomori would sit on the bench again in place of the captain Romagnoli. Tomori is tired, the report claims, while Calabria also has a slight fatigue, and in his place will be Dalot or Kalulu.

Probable Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Donnarumma; Kalulu, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Kessie, Tonali; Castillejo, Brahim, Rebic; Leao

The opponents
Udinese currently sit 12th in the Serie A table having won seven, drawn seven and lost 10 of their opening 24 league games this season, which represents an improvement on last season’s relegation battle.

Their form under head coach Luca Gotti has been good recently though, with just one defeat in their last seven games including draws with both Atalanta and Inter and impressive wins over Hellas Verona and Fiorentina.

In terms of team news, Gotti will be without former Milan forward Gerard Deulofeu, winger Fernando Forestieri, plus Jajalo and Pussetto. Argentinian midfielder Roberto Pereyra – who has two goals and four assists in an injury-interrupted campaign – is back from suspension.

He is expected to stick with the usual 3-5-2 formation, with the impressive Juan Musso in goal protected by a back three of Becao, Bonifazi and Nuytinck. Stryger Larsen and Zeegelaar will be the right and left wing-backs, with a midfield three of Rodrigo De Paul, Walace and Arslan. Roberto Pereyra and Fernando Llorente – both formerly of Juventus – will be up front.

Probable Udinese XI (3-5-2): Pau Lopez; Mancini, Cristante, Fazio; Karsdorp, Villar, Veretout, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Mayoral.

Head to head
Milan have a good record against Udinese and have won 24 matches out of a total of 47 games played between the two teams. Udinese have defeated Milan on 16 occasions.

The Rossoneri have lost just once against the Bianconeri at San Siro since 2007 and that came back in the 2016-17 season when the visitors triumphed 1-0. Since then, Milan have won two of their three home games against Udinese, with the other being a 1-1 draw.

At the start of last season, with Marco Giampaolo at the helm, Milan lost 1-0 away against after Rodrigo Becao headed in a corner in the second half. In the reverse fixture, though, Ante Rebic was the big star with two goals, one of which came in injury time in a 3-2 win.

Earlier this season when the teams met at the Friuli, Ibrahimovic’s acrobatics were enough to secure a 2-1 win in the final minutes, proving this fixture is rarely short of drama.

Match facts (via Opta):

➤ Milan have won their last two games against Udinese in Serie A: the Rossoneri could win three consecutive matches against the Friulians in the competition for the first time since 2008.

➤ Udinese have won just one of their last 13 matches (D4, L8) at Meazza stadium against AC Milan in Serie A, a 1-0 win via a Stipe Perica goal in September 2016.

➤ Only Inter (15) have picked up more points than Udinese (10 – W3, D1, L1) in the last five Serie A matches. AC Milan have lost three of their last five home Serie A games (W2), one more defeat than in all the previous 23 home games under Stefano Pioli.

➤ Milan have picked up 50+ points for only the 6th time (52 so far) after 24 seasonal Serie A matches in the three points for a win era: in the previous five (most recently in 2011/12, 50) they ended the season in the top-two of the league.

➤ Udinese have only won one of their last seven away Serie A games (D3 L3), after having won four in their previous seven matches on the road (D1 L2).

➤ Udinese have scored the fewest goals in the first half in Serie A this season (only nine), while only Napoli (eight) have conceded fewer first half goals than Milan (nine).

➤ Among the teams he’s faced more than once in Serie A, Udinese are the team against which Milan’s Ante Rebic has the best minutes per goal ratio, netting two goals in 99 minutes played for the Croatian (one every 50 minutes).

➤ In the second half of this season (since 29th January), only Romelu Lukaku (six goals) has scored more goals than Milan striker Ante Rebic in Serie A (four goals in four appearances).

➤ Udinese’s Rodrigo de Paul has scored two goals against Milan in Serie A, though both have been in Friuli – the first of these, in January 2017, was his first ever goal in the Italian top-flight.

Ones to watch
All eyes will be on Rafael Leao on Wednesday night as he leads the line for Milan and looks for his first goal since early January, though all six of his goals so far this season have come from the centre-forward position.

There will also be a big opportunity for Alessio Romagnoli to show Pioli what he is capable off and deepen his selection dilemma, while the same can be said for Pierre Kalulu, Sandro Tonali (with Bennacer soon back), Brahim Diaz and Samu Castillejo.

For the away side, Rodrigo De Paul is still their main attacking threat despite being pushed back into a midfield three from his right wing role as he has five goals and three assists so far this term.

The production has been much more spread though as Okaka and Pussetto also have three goals each amid a number of players to have netted, but it is De Paul who has the highest WhoScored player rating.

Prediction
Given that Pioli is set to rotate and keep things fresh, expecting a walkover against a team in such good recent form seems like it would be unreasonable. This could be a real struggle based in recent games, and emerging with three points before a tough trip to face Hellas Verona is a necessity by any means.

Prediction: AC Milan 2-1 Udinese

Pioli on Tonali injury, Gigio’s error and Leao’s disastrous match
Posted on March 3, 2021 by Rossonero

AC Milan find a late equalizer against Udinese but fail to close the gap with first place Inter. Pioli explains what happened.
At the end of the match it’s hard for coach Stefano Pioli to hide his disappointment. “I was expecting something more, we knew it was a complex match. Udinese are a closed squad and reduce spaces, we had no rhythm“.

We lost 2 points tonight. We wanted to win and we couldn’t. It’s a shame, we need to have more speed and quality in one-on-one situations against a team that was closed tightly in defence.

Sandro Tonali was forced to leave the pitch in the second half after an injury. “He was substituted as a precautionary measure. He suffered a contracture. I hope it’s not something serious, especially now that we have so many important games ahead“.

Rafael Leao, used as centre forward, was simply inexistent tonight. “I always expect a lot, I know his qualities. Leao has characteristics more suitable for attacking spaces, against such closed defenses he still has difficulties. He needs to anticipate the defenders and we didn’t do that tonight. We didn’t have our centre forwards tonight and the others have different characteristics“.

Gigio Donnarumma was guilty on Udinese goal. “We didn’t talk about the goal conceded. It was a slow ball, two players moved in front of him and he didn’t see it. He has saved us many times, we have to resume our race thinking about the next match. Today we did not leave the field satisfied

CM: Milan monitoring AZ Alkmaar wonderkid with Sevilla also keen

Ahead of the next transfer window, AC Milan led by technical director and club legend are looking to strengthen their frontline, as they are reportedly keeping tabs on a Dutch wonderkid.

According to the latest informations provided by Calciomercato, the Rossoneri are following AZ Alkmaar’s promising striker Myron Boadu, whose price tag would be around 15 million euros. However, the Milanese club is not the only one interested, with Sevilla’s well-known sporting director Monchi is also keen on the 20-year-old.
