AC Milan’s scouts were among the first to arrive from Europe to take a look at striker Mateo Retegui in action, but they must avoid making the same mistake they did with Enzo Fernandez

🇦🇷📝 There are currently TWO release clauses in Paulo Dybala's AS Roma contract:

1) Italian clubs - €20m
2) Abroad clubs - €12m

Of course big opportunity this summer, but Dybala himself also has to permit move, reports @FabrizioRomano via YT.

“I arrived at Milan as a fullback, but I wasn't playing much.

Then one day, everything changed. Pioli asked me 'Pierre, have you played as a CB?' & I said 'yes' even if it wasn't true.

I would've said yes even if he asked me to play as a trequartista”

#ACMilan have scored 37 of their 42 goals from open play, the highest percentage (88%) of any team in Serie A.

🎙️🗣️ Christian Vieri: "At home, Inter create 10 chances per game, they play well. You have Dumfries & Dimarco crossing, you have Barella.... You have more players putting Lukaku in a good position. I'll tell you one thing: if I played for this Inter team, I would win the top… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

After a dreadful 3-1 against Udinese before the international break, AC Milan managed to react with a massive performance against Napoli, which humbled the soon-to-be new champions at the Maradona.

The game started well for Pioli and his men as they had chances early on and eventually got the lead through Rafael Leao in the 17th minute, followed by a Brahim Diaz goal to make it 2-0 eight minutes later.

In the second half, the hosts tried pressing Milan and creating some pressure in front of Mike Maignan, but even with that impulse in their game they still failed to threaten the Frenchman in any profound way.

On the contrary, Leao dealt a blow to Napoli’s hope after leaving the defence for dead and scoring his second of the night. The nightmare did not end for Spalletti’s side as Alexis Salamaekers parted them like the red sea to make it 4-0.

It was, without a doubt, the best game Milan has had throughout this season, and hopefully it puts them on the right path for the last few games of the season and especially for the Champions League. Here are five things we learned…

1. Electric Leao
After a lot of criticism and mixed performances to say the least, Rafael Leao arrived at the Diego Armando Maradona with a bang, showing why he is one of the best wingers in the world.

The 23-year-old managed two goals and continuously beat his man to cause trouble for Napoli, who had no answer to his exploits as he looked way more comfortable on the wing compared to playing behind the striker in a more central position as he did when Pioli used a three-man defence.

The brace also marked his 10th Serie A goal this season, on top of 7 assists, which certainly isn’t bad for a player who has struggled to find continuity. Hopefully, the former Lille man can build on this and continue in the same fashion to help Milan solidify their spot in the top four and potentially go further in the Champions League.

2. Captain’s performance
The clash between Kvaratshkelia and Calabria was always going to be crucial for the outcome of the game and we can safely say that the captain got the better of his opponent on the night. The doubling up on the Georgian with help from Krunic and Tonali also helped.

Like a true captain Calabria stepped up against Napoli, neutralising arguably the best player in Serie A this season, whilst also casually picking up an assist and creating a lot of space with his runs forward, especially on the first goal.

It would seem that the Italian was all fired up to be back in the starting XI and he did not disappoint as he and Tomori were superb on the night, taking nothing away from Kjaer and Theo who also did great.

3. A dream for Brahim
It’s so interesting to watch a Milan game with Brahim on the pitch as you are never quite sure what will he produce. Fortunately for Pioli, against Napoli he decided to be the game-changer we know he could be and provided a lovely assist for the first goal after some impressive dribbling to beat three men.

The Spaniard then followed up the assist with a goal to double his side’s lead and played probably his best game of the season, being heavily involved in Milan’s attacks and surprisingly subbed off early on in.

It will be intriguing to see what the future holds for him as he has proven decisive on several occasions, despite his ups and downs, but of course his loan deal runs out in June.

4. Key to success
It felt like the midfield of last season was out there Bennacer and Tonali simply dominated the middle of the park and left little for Napoli to work with.

Tonali in particular had an amazing night as he helped a lot in both phases of the game, won many duels and provided a great assist after bullying Zielinski off the ball.

The Italian – similar to his team-mates – has been under fire lately but has managed to channel a magnificent response on the pitch which was crucial for the dominant display.

5. Super sub Saeledona
Alexis Saelemaekers replaced Brahim in the 57th minute after the Spaniard was one if not the best player on the pitch for Milan and it all seemed odd so early into the second half, but Saelemaekers made his mark he scored an amazing solo goal to make it 4-0.

His slalom run saw him ghost through three defenders, and the winger also had several other brilliant moments as everything seemed to align for him on the night and especially his dribbling as he glided past players with ease.

It’s a welcomed surprise indeed for Pioli who wouldn’t mind a bit of competition within the squad and players stepping up especially going into the final part of the season.

Juventus head coach Max Allegri has pointed at AC Milan’s result against Napoli as an example of how no team can ever be written off by the media.

Milan went into the game at the Maradona as big underdogs given they failed to win a game in the entire month of March while Napoli were 23 points ahead in the standings and are coasting to the league title.

However, the Rossoneri scored two goals in each half as Rafael Leao scored either side of the interval, with Brahim Diaz and Alexis Saelemaekers adding the other goals in what was a memorable night.

Speaking at his press conference on the eve of the game against Inter in the Coppa Italia semi-finals, Allegri was asked about how the two-legged affair could change public perceptions, with his comments relayed by Il Bianconero.

“We hope to reach the final, we’ll do our best. Then in football you need to have a balance beyond the results, positive and negative. Now Juve are like this and Inter are in another position,” he said.

“Two games and the game changes public opinion. Look at Napoli-Milan. Everyone thought Milan were doomed and they went on to win the match in Naples in a marvellous way against a Napoli having an extraordinary season.

“Little by little. Balance must reign above all at Continassa. I hate those who it makes us easily enthusiastic and depressed. We need to be balanced, have the strength that nothing and no result should move us mentally.”

Real Madrid are interested in signing Rafael Leao and have held talks with his agent Jorge Mendes, according to a report.

According to a report from Francisco Jose Delgado of Cadena SER, Leao is attracting the interest of Real Madrid ahead of the summer window and Milan would look to sell him if he does not renew between now and August.

Leao’s current contract is set to expire in June 2024 and he earns €1.4m net per season, while the request to extend is €7m. His agent is Mendes and the name of the Portuguese winger has already come up in contacts with Real Madrid.

Brahim Diaz ‘could enter the operation’ as per the journalist, which implies that he might be used as a counterpart in an offer to try and reduce the cash outlay, given the Rossoneri’s desire to sign the Spanish playmaker on a permanent deal when his latest loan expires.

Napoli defender has called AC Milan a ‘great team’ but believes that the Champions League clash will be a different story compared to last night’s league meeting.

Milan put in undoubtedly their best performance of the season right when they needed it most as they beat runaway league leaders Napoli 4-0 thanks to a brace from Rafael Leao plus goals from Brahim Diaz and Alexis Saelemaekers.

The result is absolutely huge in the scheme of Milan’s season given the poor form leading up to the game, and with Roma, Lazio, Juventus and Atalanta all winning it was imperative to produce a response that was emphatic.

Speaking on the microphones of Radio Kiss Kiss, Di Lorenzo spoke about the heavy defeat that he and his team-mates suffered, insisting things will be put right in the Champions League.

“It was a bad performance, we didn’t see the usual Napoli and now with the coach we will review the mistakes to improve in view of the next match,” he said (via SempreMilan.it).

“It will be something else, we will start on an equal footing and it will still be difficult because we have seen that Milan are a great team. We’ll have to do better to get through the round.”

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli outfoxed his counterpart Luciano Spalletti with two perfect tactical moves: Brahim Diaz on the right and Ismael Bennacer as the playmaker.

Today’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) focuses on the position of the Spaniard, who has already played wide on the right and did so with great success in the 2-0 win over Juventus at San Siro earlier in the season.

It was evident in the early stages last night that he would be able to profit from the role again given how easily he beat his opponents on the dribble, weaving in and out of three players to set up Rafael Leao’s opening goal before scoring himself from close range.

Then there was Bennacer’s more advanced role. He played mostly as part of the forward line with Rade Krunic as a holding midfielder alongside Tonali, because the Algerian’s first task was to shield the opposing playmaker Lobotka which he did.

Pioli’s reason was obvious: a player like Krunic would probably have struggled against the small Slovakian midfielder, while Bennacer – having similar physical characteristics such as a low centre of gravity – marked him more easily.

The former Empoli man was virtually flawless in both phases, so much so that he too ended up on the man of the match list together with Leao and Diaz.

AC Milan are hopeful that they will get Pierre Kalulu back for the Champions League quarter-final clash against Napoli, a report claims.

As Calciomercato.com report, the extraordinary performance from Milan at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona against Napoli after Leao’s brace, Brahim Diaz’s goal and Saelemaekers’ solo run certainly provided some light after the tunnel of March.

It was enough to temporarily forget about Kalulu’s absence, with the defender having sustained an injury with the French U21 national team. When will he be back? Kalulu must be continuously evaluated through weekly instrumental checks, but confidence is filtering ahead of the Champions League games to come.

In the aftermath of the win in Naples, the Rossoneri squad did a warm down which he was part of. Kalulu will try in every way to be available for the second leg at the Maradona, which would be a big boost, though he will not be rushed given how delicate calf problems can me.

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli chose to ditch the three-man defence for yesterday night’s game against Napoli, and it very much paid dividends.

According to Corriere dello Sport (via PianetaMilan), Pioli made the call over the international break to move away from playing with three centre-backs to using a well-tested formation like the 4-2-3-1 which has almost always brought results and good performance.

He did so on the most delicate occasion: the first of three encounters against future Italian champions Napoli. However, the Rossoneri ripped up the script with a devastating performance at the Maradona.

Rafael Leao was back to his best in his favoured position, Rade Krunic supported Sandro Tonali and Ismael Bennacer in midfield with the Algerian midfielder in particular stopping Lobotka from dictating the tempo.

Napoli president De Laurentiis was the subject of protests before and during the game which pretty much set the tone for their night. They simply never got going and were well beaten by Milan on the night, but there are two more chances to hit back in the Champions League.

There was a flashpoint during AC Milan’s 4-0 win over Napoli last night as Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara exchanged words.

As the teams were about to come out for the second half the DAZN cameras caught Spalletti and Maldini exchanging words, with the Napoli boss having been irritated by something that the Milan director did.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) have recalled the comments of Spalletti after the game in which he gave his take on the incident, accusing Maldini of being ‘disrespectful’ during the exchange.

“I was asking the referee why Lobotka was booked, given that it seemed to me a normal foul in the game. Maldini suddenly came in and didn’t allow me to finish the speech by waving his arms around,” he said.

“It was disrespectful towards me. I didn’t like the fact that he spoke above me at all. I didn’t have anything to say about Leao, on the contrary he invited me to let it go.”

Napoli were outplayed from start to finish as Rafael Leao ended his goal drought with a brace in which both goals were lovely finishes, while Brahim Diaz got the second on the night and Alexis Saelemaekers got his first league goal of the campaign in the second half.

Spalletti also analysed Napoli’s defeat: “It started badly, we gave away balls that we usually control easily. We weren’t good at playing with the usual quality of play. We’re not used to playing two goals down.

“We tried to recover leaving too many spaces that they were good at exploiting. Milan put in a great performance, starting strong and taking advantage of all the situations we gave them. We played below our level.”

The future of AC Milan’s attacking department seems to be up in the air with a few players not certain of staying for next season, a report claims.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Olivier Giroud is currently the only certainty in terms of being at Milan next season as he will soon renew his contract for another season, but then there are a number of question marks.

Then there is Rafael Leao, who has sent the club positive signals over a renewal, but now Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are aiming to turn that positivity into a signature and to close the matter in the next 10-15 days.

In June Brahim Diaz’s two-year loan will end and there is a €22m option to buy in Milan’s favour plus a €26-27m buy-back for Real Madrid. Diaz feels part of the project, he is grateful to the club and would gladly stay at Milanello to continue his journey.

The Rossoneri management intend to ask the reigning European champions for a discount, while in Spain they are considering bringing him back to sell for a capital gain.

Charles De Ketelaere has made 31 appearances for Milan this season since his move from Club Brugge but has often seemed lost. However, the amount invested and the fact he is still in an adaptation period means he should stay.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has suggested that he wants to keep playing but the club will reflect and make a decision at the end of the season, while the same applies to Divock Origi who arrived in the summer to replace Giroud but has disappointed with his return of two goals.

Ante Rebic has also had a poor season and the fact he has a contract until 2025 – combined with a €3.5m net salary – is pushing Milan towards putting him on the market in June.

There were some very positive signs from Rafael Leao during last night’s win against Napoli, and the feeling is that a renewal could follow.

Pietro Mazzara writes in his column for MilanNews how the three-man defence was a flash in the pan which impoverished attacking production and put Leao in the position of not being able to perform at his best.

Playing on the left wing again he scored a brace against the league leaders, and after the game he thanked the coach and his team-mates who have been close to him in the two and a half months he went without scoring.

The next few weeks will be important because an agreement over his renewal could come soon. The latest news is that a ‘medium-term extension is expected’ that could allow Milan to still have strength in the negotiation phase and also because Leao, should he leave the Rossoneri for mere economic reasons, does not want to do so on a free transfer

Matteo Politano does not seem to be a big admirer of AC Milan and his actions over the last two meetings might just have backfired.

MilanNews rewinds the tape to the first game between the sides at San Siro when – after scoring the penalty to make it 1-0 to Napoli – Politano went to celebrate under the Curva Sud with mocking gestures towards the Milan fans.

The Curva do not have a short memory, and the travelling fans last night called Politano a ‘son of a b**ch’, and Politano could not let it slide. Shortly after being brought down by Olivier Giroud, he turned towards the away supporters and repeatedly touches his private parts.

The Milan players who witnessed the scene and who were warming up a few yards from Politano decided not to intervene, knowing that having a heated moment at that time in the match would have been counterproductive.

Arrigo Sacchi believes that having Victor Osimhen would not have made a difference for Napoli last night after they lost 4-0 to AC Milan.

The first half showing was what set the tone as Rafael Leao opened the scoring with a delightful chip after some excellent work from Brahim Diaz, and the Spaniard turned provider to scorer to make it 2-0.

Leao got his second of the night after a lovely dribble and powerful shot that beat Meret, and then Alexis Saelemaekers got a goal off the bench after a Messi-esque dribble. The result is huge in the scheme of Milan’s season, with the top four battle increasing in intensity as the weeks go by.

Sacchi spoke during his weekly column for La Gazzetta dello Sport and he took apart Napoli’s performance against the Rossoneri, who dominated them from start to finish.

“Sensational in Naples. Milan clears the “Maradona” with a dry and well-deserved 4-0. But what happened? The answer is quite simple: Napoli lost because they lost those principles and values which, until now, had amazed everyone, while Milan have shown that the team, when it works, is always a winner. One times one always equals one and one times eleven always equals eleven,” he said.

“Here is the difference between the two teams. Napoli, which commands the table, have so far played football with great movement, great intensity and great speed. Against the Rossoneri these qualities were not seen. Spalletti’s boys started off at a slow pace, decidedly too slow. And so, by not intimidating their opponents with pressing, they gave them courage.

“There is a precise photograph that explains the whole game: for Milan Leao also returned to the defensive phase, who has hardly ever done so in two years. This means that the team were very motivated, that the players constantly helped each other, that they exchanged roles and positions and were always linked by an invisible thread which was the game.

“The Rossoneri’s success can easily be explained as the exaltation of the team. Always compact, Pioli’s group. Always ready to double mark. Always available to participate in both the possession phase and the non-possession phase: this means being in an active position at all times of the match.

“And, if you are so willing, you can afford the pressing which is essential to increase your self-esteem and to force the opponent to play the way you want.

“Now everyone will say: yes, but Osimhen was missing. So, let’s immediately clear the field of misunderstanding: in this context, that is, with a Napoli that is not very gritty, very slow and very predictable, even Osimhen would have struggled. And this explains that one player cannot solve the situation.

“There are three fundamental components that have allowed Spalletti’s boys to reach the top of the standings and amaze the Italian public: strong motivation, team spirit and organisation.

“The reasons came in part from the fact that important pieces of the group from the past were sold in the summer, for example Insigne, Mertens and Koulibaly, and everyone thought that the team had weakened.

“Wanting to prove the bias was wrong was a major drive, just as an important contribution was made by the strong team spirit that Spalletti, a true strategist, was able to build. And then, as a logical consequence, the organisation of the game arrived, which allows you to win even when worthy men are missing, but which cannot exist without the two previous qualities.

“Against Milan, without the right motivations and therefore without the necessary team spirit, could there be the same organisation? I would say no. And Osimhen’s absence has nothing to do with it.

“For Milan, in addition to Leao who demonstrated a truly commendable ability to sacrifice himself and whom we had rarely admired, I really liked Brahim Diaz. He fought, created, scored, gave assists and was able to struggle even in the defensive phase.

“He was a bogeyman for the entire Napoli defence, a defense which, to be honest, seemed too soft and vulnerable to me. Why all this happened I don’t know exactly. Perhaps an excess of enthusiasm, perhaps the thought of being unbeatable. Maybe.

“Moments of crisis or simply bad matches happen to anyone: Milan also went through a bad time, now Liverpool are experiencing it. Now Spalletti and the managers will have to be very good because a lot of psychological work will be needed.

“The speech to be made to the team is very clear: ‘If we are a collective, we can beat anyone. If we are not a collective, we have little chance against anyone’. Even in the Champions League, with the double challenge between Napoli and Milan, this result can have an impact: for Spalletti’s boys it is a hard blow to digest quickly.”
