Why Marco Giampaolo could be a sensible fit for AC Milan; Tactics to key players who will benefit
June 4, 2019

Speculation remains rife that Marco Giampaolo will be named as AC Milan’s next coach, and there is certainly an argument to be made that he’ll be an astute appointment.

As noted by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Paolo Maldini is expected to be appointed as technical director in the coming days while Giampaolo is said to be the favourite to be named as Gennaro Gattuso’s successor.

While there has yet to be an official announcement confirming the move, it has been widely reported across the Italian media over the past few days and so it would arguably be a surprise if another candidate emerged as the front runner at this stage.

So, would Giampaolo be a good appointment? On one hand, question marks could be raised over his lack of experience, pedigree and ability to take charge of a European giant and deal with the pressure at the highest level.

The 51-year-old has yet to finish higher than ninth place in Serie A and has no notable honours to his name which in turn makes it a possible gamble.

However, there are undoubtedly many positives to consider too and the majority of those revolve around his tactical qualities and man-management skills in developing and improving younger players while also getting his teams playing with an identity and direction.

Return to a 4-3-1-2?

It’s a system that many Milan fans have been crying out for in recent years, but the general consensus amongst recent coaches has been to stick with a 4-3-3.

While it has been effective, it can often become predictable and makes it difficult to break teams down if they are set up with an organised defensive shape.

In turn, variety and a different approach is needed, and that is what a 4-3-1-2 would provide with different dynamics in the final third while maintaining that defensive solidity off the ball too.

Who will benefit from the switch?

With Patrick Cutrone struggling for playing time again this past season, he may well get a more prominent role playing alongside Krzysztof Piatek in a front pairing, while with Andre Silva set to return from his spell at Sevilla, the Portuguese international could get another chance to make his mark.

Piatek was often left isolated and frustrated after his initial impact on arrival, but with a chance to link up with another striker and have creative players closer to him in the final third, it could help him maximise his qualities too.

Lucas Paqueta made a significant difference after arriving in January, and moving the classy Brazilian ace into the trequartista role could be an ideal switch to allow him to be the creative hub in the side and make things happen in the final third.

Hakan Calhanoglu has proven he can play on the left of a midfield three effectively, offering technical quality and passing as well as hard work and defensive effort off the ball.

Lucas Biglia could also emerge as a key figure with Giampaolo’s system relying on a deep-lying midfield man pulling the strings in front of the defence, while Franck Kessie could offer energy and tenacity as well as his surging runs forward.

Energetic and attacking full-backs will also benefit with Andrea Conti and Davide Calabria capable of ticking the right boxes, while given Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara’s composure on the ball, there is still hope that partnership will blossom at Milan in the future.

That’s all without considering the possible arrivals this summer should Giampaolo get the backing of Elliott to add reinforcements to the squad, and he’ll hope he can stamp his mark on the group by bringing in players who fit his ideas and style.

CorSera: Boban emerges as serious candidate to be AC Milan sporting director
By Madison Derian-Toth - June 4, 2019

FIFA General Secretary and former AC Milan player Zvonimir Boban could be announced as the new sporting director later this week, a report claims.

Milan have been looking to fill the position since Leonardo left the role last week, as he did not agree with the direction of the club.

Boban is a former Milan player, and Croatian national team player. During his time at the club, Boban won 4 Serie A titles, a Champions League and Italian Supercoppa.

According to il Corriere della Sera, Boban will be the first of the new management roles officially announced by the club. The announcements are expected on friday, when they will hopefully add Paolo Maldini to the Technical Director role.

Boban will be another former player that will join a management role with in his former club.

Roberto Baggio on Milan: "It is not my habit to make comments however, Maldini as a manager, Zvone Boban, just as much ...
It seems like a great combination”

At this point there is no doubt, Marco Giampaolo will be the new coach of AC Milan. Paolo Maldini is working to complete his staff with Zvonimir Boban and Igli Tare as sporting director likely to join the Rossoneri soon.

Regarding Giampaolo, Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero confirms the passing of the Italian coach to Milan. “I talked with Giampaolo and he told me that he goes on vacation and we will met on Monday. He is still under contract with me. I read that he will go to Milan and I can say that Milan are making a big signing. I repeat, I can’t stop a person who flies high up after Sampdoria and goes to a top club“.

Former Inter coach Stefano Pioli will replace Giampaolo at Sampdria. “He is a great coach, a very nice person. I had the opportunity to meet him three years ago. Will he be the new coach? Very likely“, said Ferrero for Telenord.

Ferrero also reveals that the appointment of Giampaolo will take place next week. Meanwhile, Sky Sport reports that Giampaolo and Paolo Maldini are in continuous contacts discussing the upcoming transfer movement.

Repubblica: Milan told to pay €35m to land Sampdoria star Andersen
By Oliver Fisher - June 7, 2019

Sampdoria have set their price for defender Joachim Andersen amid links with AC Milan and Arsenal, a report claims.

Links between the Rossoneri and Andersen have intensified in recent days given Marco Giampaolo’s imminent appointment as the club’s next head coach.

Giampaolo’s system requires two ball-playing centre-backs, which you can read more about in our tactical insight on Giampaolo here, and he is believed to be keen on bringing the Denmark international with him from Sampdoria to the San Siro.

Arsenal are also believed to be interested though and could provide strong competition, and La Repubblica suggest that the Blucerchiati are using interest to drive up his price.

They claim that Samp have now placed a €35m valuation on the 23-year-old, who made 32 Serie A appearances under Marco Giampaolo last season, filling the void left by Milan Skriniar.

Juventus, Roma and Napoli have also been credited with interest in Andersen, while Premier League duo Spurs and Manchester United are keen, with the latter having ‘made contact’.

AC Milan are late but the Rososneri are still trying. La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Corriere dello Sport confirm that AC Milan are trying to sign Cagliari star Nicolo Barella, a player Inter are desperate to bring that San Siro. According to the Italian newspapers, AC Milan have contacted Cagliari promising a rich bid for the young midfielder.

Inter have already agreed personal terms with Barella but there is a lot of distance with Cagliari. Cagliari value the Italy international €50 million but are willing to accept technical counterparts as part of the operation. Inter on the other hand are not willing to invest more that €35 million for Barella. A considerable distance that Milan are trying to exploit and snatch Barella from the city-rivals.

The key to success for Milan could be Patrick Cutrone, a player that Cagliari would gladly accept as part of the deal. In addition to Cutrone, AC Milan could offer a figure of €20 million that would bring the total fee at 50 million.

La Gazzetta dello Sport reveals that the Italian defensive midfielder is a specific request of Zvonimir Boban. Boban will join Paolo Maldini’s staff and will be responsible for every signing in midfield. Maldini and Boban have asked Elliot to make a sacrifice for Nicolo Barella, dubbed the ‘next Steven Gerrard’.

The two consider the 22-year-old Italian as the best talent of Serie A and would like to build the midfield department around him. Another alternative, option B, is to offer Cagliari 40 million plus a player from Milan Primavera. Even this scenario would be pleasing for Cagliari.

*Napoli are confident that they can haggle down Udinese’s €35m asking price for Rodrigo De Paul to just under €30m.*
*ADL wants to close a deal with the Pozzo family and will try to use his good relationship with the club to lower the €35m price-tag

AC Milan and Manchester City expect to play the Europa League and the Champions League next summer as the CAS has not scheduled the hearings for the Serie A and the Premier League giants.

The CAS has released the timetable of the hearings until the 14th of August and neither AC Milan nor Man City are in the list. Play-offs of Europa League and Champions League would have already begun by that date and that's why both European giants expect to avoid a possible European ban for next season.

Both clubs are under investigation for breach of Financial Fair play and feared one of the possible sanction could be a European ban. Their appeals, however, will be discussed during the season, after the 14th of August.

Thus, as things stand, the arbitration concerning the sanctions for the three-year period of 2014-17, could be discussed at the beginning of the season. In that case, it is almost certain that the club will feature in the Europa League, as the group stage draw takes place at the end of August. Unless an urgent proceeding is scheduled in the coming days (not likely) AC Milan will be allowed to play the Europa League next season while Man City will play in the Champions League.

AC Milan have sped up negotiations for Nicolo Barella already proposing a very lucrative offer to Cagliari that exceeds Inter’s bid.

MILAN TRANSFER NEWS – The Rossoneri may have joined the race for Nicolo Barella only recently but have every intention of coming out victorious. La Gazzetta dello Sport and Il Corriere dello Sport reported yesterday that AC Milan had contacted Cagliari to discuss the transfer of the 22-year-oldcentral midfielder.

Inter were considered favorites to land the services of Nicolo Barella. The city-rivals had already agreed personal terms with the player but not with Cagliari. The Sardinian club wants €50 million while Inter are unwilling to go beyond €35m. A situation that Milan are trying to exploit.

Il Corriere della Sera reports that AC Milan have presented Cagliari an opening offer of €35 million plus bonuses for Nicolo Barella. The Red and Blacks have exceeded Inter’s bid and, in addition, are willing to included a player from Milan Primavera in this operation.

AC Milan have sped up negotiations for the Italian midfielder after the insistence of Zvonimir Boban who considers the Cagliari star as the best in his role, in Italy. Boban will be the person in charge to take care transfer business in midfield. Despite his young age, Barella has made more than 100 appearances with Cagliari and is now a regular start with the Italian national team.

Dubbed the ‘next Steven Gerrard’ by the Italian press, Barella possesses great technique, vision, stamina, and physical strength, despite his relatively short stature. A versatile player that can cover any role in midfield.

DONE DEAL: AC Milan have reached an agreement with Empoli for their midfielder Rade Krunic worth 8 million euros plus bonuses. He will sign the contract tomorrow. ✅⚫🔴 (Fabrizio Romano)

Incoming head coach Marco Giampaolo is interested in a summer move for Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torriera, Gianluca Di Marzio has confirmed.

The Rossoneri were linked with a move for the 23-year-old earlier in the week as they prepare to announce Giampaolo as their new coach at the San Siro, with Torreira having excelled under him at Sampdoria.

The Uruguay international then fuelled those rumours while on international duty by admitting that he is struggling to adapt to life in England.

Now, Di Marzio has confirmed that Giampaolo “dreams” of reuniting with Torreira at San Siro, hinting that any possibility of signing him will be explored this summer.

It is described as a “difficult” pursuit given the player’s importance to Arsenal and the fact he has only been there for 12 months.

Torreira does have a contract at the Emirates Stadium until 2023 and featured in 50 matches across all competitions in his first season for the Gunners, scoring two and assisting five.

Suso has interest from Arsenal, West Ham & Tottenham. However, the most concrete link at this stage is with Atletico Madrid.

Milan have to make a big sacrifice in the market and Suso's future at Milan grows more doubtful.

Arsenal are determined to keep Torreira and do not consider Milan's interest to be more than one of initial interest at the moment. Giampaolo is a huge fan of his former player & would be interested in firming up a concrete offer should the player confirms he wants to leave

Arrigo Sacchi as his book presentation this evening: "When I signed the contract with Milan, I signed a blank page, and Galliani made me earn less than what I earned at Parma..

Giampaolo: "At Sampdoria intense and formative years: I developed my football thinking"
The now upcoming Milan coach Marco Giampaolo, on the occasion of the awarding of the Golden Helm to the Italian Association of Soccer Coaches of the Arezzo section, spoke of his seasons on the Sampdoria bench: "They were intense, formative years, in which I had the opportunity to work optimally developing my football thinking, I was lucky enough to train good and important football players, representative in the best Italian and European clubs, being here also puts me in a position to thank those who allowed me to be here".

Giampaolo: "Serie A has become more difficult in recent years, because the mentality of the coaches has changed, even the small teams have adapted to the right mentality. Then, the difference is always decided by world-class player, but sometimes ideas can reduce that gap."

Former Milan chiefs Silvio Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani insist they had chosen Coach Marco Giampaolo in 2016 rather than Vincenzo Montella.
They ran the club for over 30 years, before a brief spell under Yonghong Li and since last April Elliott Management.
“I had opted for Giampaolo in the summer of 2016, when we were sharing our ideas with one of the many Chinese groups in negotiations to buy the club,” former CEO Galliani told Sky Sport Italia.

“They wanted Montella, who I do respect, don’t get me wrong. Giampaolo can confirm this, he came to my house and if it were up to me, we’d have hired him in 2016.”
Giampaolo went to Sampdoria instead and now seems to be all set for a new job at Milan.
“He seems a Coach who likes beautiful football, has an attacking mentality and that is what you need in a team that must win convincingly,” added Berlusconi.
“I like that he’d bring back the trequartista. I will ask the current Milan President if I can meet with Giampaolo, as I think I can give him some useful tips. I did talk to President Paolo Scaroni recently and perhaps he also chose Giampaolo because of my advice.
“I’d be happy if Milan just stepped on to the pitch every time with an attacking intent, playing good football and showing respect for their opponents.
“There were very few shots on goal this season and that really disappointed me. Gennaro Gattuso is the great athlete we all know and who gave so much to Milan. I am very fond of him as a person and a player.
“I did have some disagreements with him as a Coach, because we didn’t share the same views on what the tactical system ought to be.
