Daniel Maldini has been very successful for AC Milan’s Primavera team last season and as a reward, he also trained mostly with the senior side and earned several call ups for the match squad. At the beginning of February, he finally made his very brief Serie A debut against Hellas Verona.

After this short appearance, it remains to be seen if coach Stefano Pioli will give Paolo Maldini’s son more chances after the resumption of the Serie A campaign. However, after the season comes to an end, his future could lie elsewhere, although in a somewhat familiar environment.

According to journalist Nicolo Schira on Twitter, the attacking midfielder is the object of interest of newly-promoted Serie B side Monza, who are owned by former Milan owner Silvio Berlusconi and led by former Rossoneri CEO Adriano Galliani.

But Maldini is not the only young player that Galliani has targeted from Milan. Schira also adds that midfielder Alessandro Sala is also on the experienced director’s wishlist to strengthen Monza’s squad.

Despite the current season still ongoing, the next campaign is already a hot topic for the AC Milan environment. The reason for this is that the Rossoneri are preparing for yet another revolution. However, this time it will be something very different, with Ralf Rangnick ready to take over at the club.

The German is currently acting in an executive role at Red Bull, precisely as head of sport and development. However, before taking this role, he enjoyed a very rich coaching career, sitting on the bench of Hoffenheim, Schalke and Red Bull Leipzig on two occasions.

The quality and passion of Rangnick for football is evident from the way he operates and the results he has obtained but it has also been confirmed by two of his former pupils – Yussuf Poulsen and Kevin Kampl – who spoke to German TV Sport 1 (via milannews.it) in July 2018 when Rangnick returned to the Red Bull Leipzig bench.

“Rangnick is a perfectionist, he thinks about all the little details. He is very ambitious and always tries to improve and does everything for us, so we can give everything on the pitch. This really includes everything both on and off the pitch,” Poulsen said.

“I have known Rangnick for several years now. I have to say that I have met many people in football, but I have never met someone who is in love with football like him. He really works so hard that everything is perfect. Not only on the field but everything. He does everything to ensure that the players are at the top, you just have to focus on your football. He does a great job both as a coach and sporting director,” Kampl added.

Ralf Rangnick has given his approval for AC Milan to make a move as Marseille have decided to sell one of their key men, a report claims.

According to Calciomercato.com, Marseille have made the decision to part with Florian Thauvin this summer, with his contract set to expire in June 2021.

With Ligue 1 cancelled and Marseille in financial difficulties, the risk of losing the player on a free transfer in a year is too high – something their American ownership and President Jacques-Henri Eyraud cannot afford to see happen.

Thauvin will cost around €20million with a number of clubs in Italy alerted to the situation, most notably Milan and Roma. However the Giallorossi – after the suspension of the sporting director Gianluca Petrachi – appear to have taken a back seat for now while Milan have the clearest ideas regarding their future.

Rangnick likes the type of player that Thauvin is, as does current sporting director Frederic Massara, as it is important to sign players in the peak of their career with international experience to help the youth project along.

As per Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old has 78 goals and 51 assists in 237 goals for Marseille across all competitions.

AC Milan have an advantage in negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt over the future of two players, according to a report.

Andre Silva arrived at Milan back in 2017 from Porto for a fee widely reported to be in the region of €38million, but he never settled and was sent to Eintracht Frankfurt on a two-year loan last summer after a failed spell at Sevilla last season.

After an inconsistent first half of the season, Andre Silva has exploded: he has scored seven goals since the Bundesliga games restart for Eintracht, making it 15 goals and five assists in all competitions this campaign.

According to MilanNews, there has been a flip in the stance regarding permanent deals for Andre Silva and Ante Rebic, who arrived at Milan on the same terms on deadline day last summer.

In February, it was presumed that sending the Portuguese striker to Eintracht in a straight swap for Rebic wouldn’t be enough, but now the valuation of Silva is skyrocketing.

Eintracht have discovered that they have a prolific striker on their hands, meaning they could therefore try to speed up negotiations over a permanent deal to stop his value rising even more.

The most concrete hypothesis is now a straight swap deal, but it cannot be excluded that the Rossoneri may try to get some cash as well.

Milan reportedly received good news regarding Simon Kjaer’s fitness, as the Dane underwent tests to exclude ligament damage in his right knee.

The centre-back had to come off before half-time against Lecce last night and the Diavolo feared he had suffered a serious knee injury.

But Tuttomercatoweb reports the scans have revealed no damage to the ligaments in his right knee and the extent of the problem will be assessed in the coming days.

Milan, who resumed the season with an emphatic 4-1 win at the Via del Mare, are back in action already against Roma on Sunday.

The former Atalanta man will most likely miss the big game against the Giallorossi but the extent of the injury is still unknown.

Hakan Calhanoglu was given the Man of the Match award by Tuttosport for his performance in Monday’s 4-1 win over Lecce.

The Turkey international had a hand to play in all four goals and bagged two assists plus it was his shot who was spilled for Giacomo Bonaventura to make it 2-1. You can see the highlights of his performance here.

Tuesday’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) provides player ratings for the Rossoneri players involved in Lecce, giving Calhanoglu a 7.5 out of 10 for his performance.

Samu Castillejo and Giacomo Bonaventura were both awarded a 7 for their displays, while Kjaer (who went off injured), Franck Kessié, Ismael Bennacer, Ante Rebic and substitute Rafael Leao all got 6.5.

Gigio Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli and Theo Hernandez all received a 6, while Andrea Conti – deemed as “not very present” – got just 5.5.

The worst rating went to Matteo Gabbia however, as he received a 5 for conceding the penalty and losing confidence from that point onwards.

Matteo Gabbia appeared to be hard done by in Monday night’s 4-1 win over Lecce as he was punished for a foul in the area on Khouma Babacar.

Gabbia was brought on early in the second half after Simon Kjaer hobbled off having looked to have fought off the previous injury he sustained.

Gabbia was penalised for a foul on Boubacar with Paolo Valeri immediately pointing to the spot and not consulting with VAR, and Mario Mancosu sent Donnarumma the wrong way from the spot to level.

Replays seemed to show it looked harsh as Boubacar essentially fell into Gabbia rather than the latter fouling him, and the images below shows their body position as the contact was

AC Milan see Hakan Calhanoglu as a key part of their plans for the future despite some interesting comments from the player’s agent, a report claims.

The Turkey international had a hand to play in all four goals and bagged two assists plus it was his shot who was spilled for Giacomo Bonaventura to make it 2-1. You can see the highlights of his performance here.

However, despite the fact he has been virtually ever-present in the starting XI since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen three years ago, there have been a number of rumours over the past few months suggesting that Calhanoglu is considered sellable by the Rossoneri management.

His agent also came out on Tuesday and – during an interview with TMW – admitted that his client has dreams of playing in the Champions League, suggesting a renewal with Milan on his current deal (which expires in 2021) is not a formality.

According to Calciomercato.com however, Milan see the 27-year-old as central to the project that Ralf Rangnick wants to build at the club, with the German having wanted him at RB Leipzig before.

Elliott and Rangnick want Calhanoglu to extend his current deal and are now studying the strategy to convince him to sign, with the player clear that he wants a shot at the Champions League sooner rather than later.

Here is what we learned from the first league game back…

1. Rebic’s returns
While Rebic was disappointing against Juventus last week, earning himself a straight red card around the 20th minute, he continued his positive performances with a well-taken goal against Lecce.

Although the Croatia international did not shine throughout the game, it must be noted he did play slightly out of position as the centre-forward and did do a lot of selfless work running into the channels to create space for the attacking midfielders.

His pace and composure did earn him a goal after a fantastic 60-yard run to finish off a counter-attack, meaning he moves onto eight goals for the season in all competitions.

2. Room for improvement?

Hakan Calhanoglu was involved in all four goals and even earned the man of the match in our player ratings after the game. However, everyone who watched the game would most likely say that the Turk was not actually that impressive, yet he still managed to have a big say in the game despite often being sloppy.

The Turkey international always manages to secure himself a starting spot and rumours are suggesting that probable new manager Ralf Rangnick considers him essential to his project – so we must ask if we are missing something.

The answer is probably yes. Hakan looked fantastic a season back when Gennaro Gattuso took over and has shown overall that he has vision and the abilities to strike a ball whether it’s a pass or shot.

His problem though is that he lacks consistency and makes sloppy mistakes at times, but with the potential arrival of Rangnick and the reinforcements coming in the summer the German may just be able to take to former Leverkusen man to the next level.

3. A bad day at the office

Ismael Bennacer started the game rather disappointingly by his high standards. While he grew into the game in the second half, he made cheap mistakes throughout and didn’t command the midfield like he usually does.

A lack of fitness may be to blame and it would be naive to assume all players will hit the ground running after over three months off, but against Lecce we would usually expect Bennacer to have little to no problems in dictating the midfield.

Hopefully the Algerian bounces back next Sunday against Roma in what is going to be a vital game for the European hopes of both teams.

4. Struggles continue
Unfortunately, there has hardly been a game this season in which the right side of Milan’s defender has not been a weak link. Monday’s game was no different, and Conti is not really improving regardless of the playing time he’s getting.

Coach Pioli will have to look for solutions next week as – in contrast to Lecce – Roma are going to be a much bigger threat and harder to contain.

Andrea Conti

With rumours circulating around we understand that the management is aware of this problematic area, but with nobody out of Conti and Calabria stepping up it gets even more necessary to pursue a right back in the summer transfer window.

It must also be noted that with Simon Kjaer out due to injury, Gabbia will likely have a big job against the Giallorossi too as he will partner Alessio Romagnoli, and he must show more composure and confidence than he did on Monday – even if the penalty call was harsh.

5. A confidence booster?
Rafael Leao hasn’t had the best of seasons thus far, as even with Ibrahimovic being injured the forward was not able to earn himself a spot in the starting XI and Milan are growing more and more concerned about their investment.

The Portuguese, however, did manage to score a goal at last and while it was a tap in it could help a lot to boost his morale and give him that much needed injection of confidence.

We have seen what he is capable of, but a lack of consistency has been a problem. While he is fairly young and could be moulded by Rangnick, the 21-year-old must hope this is something to build off rather than yet another false start.
