Although the season is still ongoing, the AC Milan directors are already preparing for the next one and the transfer window in September. As Stefano Pioli and Paolo Maldini will remain, the situation is now a bit different.

According to Daniele Longo in his latest video for Calciomercato.com, Florentino Luis is still an important target for the Rossoneri. In fact, the midfielder’s agent has stayed in touch with Frederic Massara and Paolo Maldini in recent months.

As a result of this, Milan are now ready to continue the negotiations with Benfica. Florentino came close to joining the Rossoneri back in January and he could leave the Portuguese side on a loan formula in September.

Stefano Pioli has approved the deal and the Milan scouts have followed him closely for a long time, convinced that he would be a good signing. Work is underway to reach an agreement and the formula could perhaps be a two-year loan with an option to buy.

Pioli expects Leao to 'explode' next season

Milan coach Stefano Pioli has claimed he expected the good performance against Atalanta on Friday and believes Rafael Leao will ‘explode’ next season.
A hard fought 1-1 draw with Atalanta left Pioli happy, as he saw a resolute Milan who went for the three points all the way until the end.
“The team are doing well and everyone is available,” Pioli told Sky Sport Italia after the match. “The great thing is that we tried to win it to the end, this is the most important thing.

Pioli has been confirmed until June 2022, but the former Fiorentina and Inter coach has claimed he always kept calm.
“I’m happy with the renewal, but I have always been peaceful. I have always had great serenity and convition.
“We must do quality work, we are Milan and we must continue to develop. Let’s think about the two games remaining and then we can rest before we go again.
“We want to give continuity to what we are doing, then if we can improve it, we will.”
For the continuity Pioli is asking, he might refer to keeping Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played the full 90 minutes against La Dea.
“The contribution he has given to our growth is evident. I hope to work with him again, but there are still many things that must be put on the table.
“There’s no doubt about the fact that he is still well and can carry on, but it depends on many different aspects.
“I believe he and the club haven’t spoken yet. There was sill no certainty as to who the coach would have been, and I believe the talks have not been arranged due to this reason.”
Milan are lacking the leading goalscorer of the top teams but Pioli pointed to Ibrahimovic’s arrival and claimed Leao has shown ‘enormous potential’ but mostly in training so far.
“Who wouldn’t want [a striker that scores 25 goals a season]? But my belief is that we all made an effort and the performances we offered are everyone’s credit.
“We were a young team that knew very little about each other, it was normal that we needed time. The arrival of Ibra was fundamental, to help the young players grow around him. But I think there will be other things put on the plate, it will still take some time.
“[Leao] has enormous potential, it’s right to have great expectations for him. He’s growing, this year he will be important for the next season.
“He does much better in training than in the matches, but he will get there. Today, he was positive but he can do more. He has the quality to open the games, from the beginning or coming off the bench.
“Next year he could explode, or at least be more consistent.”
Pioli claimed that the confidence grew with time at San Siro and the team insist on doing well.
“The awareness has changed. The lack of consistency and wins in direct games had taken away some of our self-esteem.
“Instead, beating Juve and Lazio gave us great confidence. We have to end the season well. We had many tight matches, I can only congratulate my team.”

Report: Milan closing in on beating Arsenal to signing of LaLiga midfielder with €40m clause

AC Milan are closing in on the signing of Espanyol midfielder Marc Roca, according to the latest reports filtering from Spain.

The deep-lying midfielder has been one of the few bright spots for Espanyol in a season which saw them relegated back to the second tier of Spanish football.

Mundo Deportivo (via MilanNews) recently reported that Roca is one of a number of midfield targets that Milan have in view of the summer transfer window. They stated that the Rossoneri were pressing hard to sign the 23-year-old, who has a release clause of €40million and is also being chased by Arsenal

🎙️Pioli:"It is right to have high expectations for Leao, he has incredible potential. He is much better in training than in games. Today he did well but I think that he can do more. He will have to explode next season. He has the quality to become the player who wins us matches."

📰Sky: Lokomotiv Moscow is always interested in Laxalt. Milan is asking for Aleksey Miranchuk. But obviously, it can't be an equal exchange. It remains to be seen if an agreement will be reached between both clubs. https://t.co/m9iYQGgY4j

📰DiMarzio: AC Milan considers Sandro Tonali as a priority for the midfield. Maldini spoke with the player's agent. whichever team that finds an agreement with Cellino first, Brescia's president, will close the deal immediately."

📰DiMarzio: In the next days, there will be a meeting in Casa Milan between AC Milan management and Calhanoglu's agent to discuss his contract extension. His contract expires in 2021.

📰Tuttosport: AC Milan, for the midfield, is keeping an eye on Samuele Ricci, the player is appreciated by the Rossoneri management. They will also have to decide whether they want to continue pursuing Dominik Szoboszlai or not.

Ibrahimovic wants €6m per year to stay at Milan – Maldini to offer €4m
MERCATO NEWS

By Isak Möller -

Despite all the rumours in recent months, Zlatan Ibrahimovic could stay at AC Milan for one more season. The Rossoneri’s decision to renew Stefano Pioli’s renewal has worked in favour of the big Swede.

According to Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com, Pioli has specifically asked CEO Ivan Gazidis to lock down Ibrahimovic for next season. The latter and Gigio Donnarumma are currently in Montecarlo to meet their agent, Mino Raiola.

Of course, they will discuss the future and there could be some developments already in the middle of next week. Ibrahimovic will be 39 years in October, but he has shown everyone that he still can make a difference on and off the pitch.

Between a boat ride and a bit of relaxation, the striker will take the time to reiterate what his economic demands are to Mino Raiola. ‘Ibracadabra’ is energised and convinced that Milan can’t ignore him.

The numbers are also in his favour: 7 goals and 4 assists in 16 games. That’s why he wants a one-year contract worth €6m, the same salary that Donnarumma earns on a yearly basis.

To find an agreement, the parties will have to meet in the middle. Milan and Paolo Maldini will soon make a first offer of around €4m per year, and it will be up to Mino Raiola to mediate between the parties

Poor display from stalwart vs Atalanta justifies why Milan exit is now inevitable

While Milan were able to grind out a draw against Atalanta on Friday night, the absence of Ismael Bennacer in our midfield was noticeable as Lucas Biglia stepped in.

The 34-year-old will see his contract expire this summer, and while it’s arguably something that many Milan fans have known and identified for a while, he’s simply no longer of use to us moving forward with Football Italia noting earlier this month that he is expected to move on as a free agent at the end of the season.

His experience perhaps still holds weight in the dressing room and on the training pitch, but on the pitch in game situations, he has proven to be incapable of having the level of influence on games that is needed in our midfield moving forward.

Spectator role, key mistakes
For the opening 15 minutes or so against Atalanta, it was difficult to even notice Biglia’s presence on the pitch. He had no real impact on our build-up play or defensive shape as he was often bypassed in midfield and simply played a spectator role.

The first time he was significantly mentioned by the commentators was when the penalty was awarded against us, while he then proceeded to lose possession in the build-up to Atalanta’s equaliser.

While there was the odd first-time pass up the pitch and a flash of smart reading of play, there was arguably no real positive influence from Biglia being involved and aside from being caught out individually and not having the mobility and stamina to get about the pitch and impose himself on the encounter, his flaws had a knock-on effect on others too.

As seen in the first image below, Biglia was often bypassed in midfield with one simple vertical pass, and as he pushed up the pitch, he left space behind him which Ruslan Malinovskiy and Alejandro Gomez flourished in.

That in turn often forced one of the centre-halves to push up and leave a huge void behind them, but fortunately this wasn’t exposed more ruthlessly by the visitors. Further, Franck Kessie had to work doubly hard at times to cover his teammate’s failings and in doing so almost ran himself into the ground after another magnificent effort and performance.

The second and third images above show how bad Biglia’s positioning was at times too, as he failed to provide a protective shield in front of the defence and left them exposed with plenty of space for Atalanta to look a threat.

While the first example is in the build-up to the equaliser, the Argentine stalwart is chasing shadows yet again while in the second he has been dragged out wide, unnecessarily when you consider two other Milan players are out there already, and that gives Gomez a chance at a free hit from just inside the box.

It was painfully obvious just how much we missed Bennacer anyway, but with Biglia coming nowhere near close to offering us some semblance of solidity in midfield, it was surprising that Rade Krunic didn’t either start the game or come on much earlier.

Nevertheless, if there was a perfect example of why it’s time for Biglia to move on and for Milan to continue down this path with individuals who have the tenacity, combativeness and quality on the ball like Bennacer and Kessie to play a pivotal role in both phases of the game, then this encounter was it.
