Journalist claims Milan and Newcastle are battling for Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder

By Oliver Fisher - 6 August 2020, 20:35

AC Milan are one of the teams interested in signing Zenit St. Petersburg midfielder Wilmar Barrios, according to a report.

After Milan-Cagliari on Saturday night Pioli – speaking in the press conference – Pioli admitted the need to sign midfielders in particular.

“The midfield department cannot be made up of only two starters, but four starters. 22 starters will be needed, it will be necessary to raise the level of the whole team,” he said.

MilanNews recently reported that the Rossoneri will not spend €30-40million for a single midfielder, and rather it is simpler to imagine this figure can be divided and spent on two players, maybe at €20m each.

Sport Witness have added a new name to the list of targets, as they cite South American journalist Diego Rueda in claiming Milan are in the race to land Zenit’s Wilmar Barrios, along with Newcastle.

The Colombia international joined from Boca Junior in February 2019 and the report suggests Zenit will likely only be open to selling Barrios for a profit on the €15m they spent.

Exactly five months have passed since AC Milan decided to terminate Zvonimir Boban’s contract after an explosive interview he gave.

The former Chief Football Officer was fired by CEO Ivan Gazidis back March 7 2020 after an unauthorised interview released to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which the Croatian manager revealed that an agreement was in place with Ralf Rangnick.

During their statement, Milan confirmed that they had dismissed Boban essentially on the grounds of ‘just cause’, something never digested by the former player who immediately decided to resort with legal proceedings.

Now, the Croatian has given another tell-all interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, discussing his farewell and admitting that he has no regrets.

“I would do it all again, I couldn’t risk seeing a stranger with my face in the mirror. I am happy that so many decisions discussed and not understood turned out to be of a high level,” he said.

“Now everyone sees that our choices, among a thousand complexities, have not been made in vain and that the basis for a real Milan is there.”

Paolo Maldini has remained in his place as technical director, something Boban believes is vital for the club’s future direction.

“If Maldini will have a central role in the future Milan? Certainly he should, for a thousand reasons but above all for that of the demonstrated competence. We had too little fun but c’est la vie.”

On Pioli, Boban added: “Stefano is an excellent person and an excellent coach, we talked after the signing and I was very pleased.

“Obviously I’m satisfied, he did a work of a top level. In the end, Pioli was our choice in the moment of great difficulty and it is nice to see so many great progresses from the team and also from his.”

Among those who pushed the most for Ibrahimovic’s arrival in January was Boban, who explained: “After the summer transfer market last year, I declared that we needed two experienced players.

“With Ibrahimovic and Kjaer plus with the extraordinary explosion of Rebic who is a World Cup runner-up and a player of good experience, Milan have become much more mature and self-confident.

“As a result, almost all the players have transformed for the better. As for Ibra, I asked in February to renew his contract because we had a gentlemen’s agreement with him: the pact was that, if he wasn’t fit enough, he would quit on his own.

#Milan is only waiting for Ibrahimovic's approval to renew. The Rossoneri is in a hurry to close some incoming transfers: 6-7 reinforcements will arrive for Pioli. There was another survey for #Torreira: he isn't part of Arteta's project and is a profile that #Gazidis likes a lot. [Vito Angelé]

Zvonimir Boban for La Gazzetta dello Sport:

About working in Milan:

Now everyone can see that our choices, in the midst of a thousand complexities, were not made in vain and that there are grounds for rebuilding the true Milan.

Will Maldini play a major role next season?

He certainly should. There are a thousand reasons for this, but mainly because of the competences… We had too little time, but c'est la vie.

About Pioli:

Stefano is a great person and an excellent coach. We talked to each other after signing the contract and I was delighted. Of course, I'm happy with his work so far. Pioli was our choice at a time of great difficulty, and it's nice to see the team progressing so well, as well as him.

About Ibrahimović:

After last year's summer transfer window, I declared that we need two experienced players. Thanks to Ibrahimovic and Kjaer, as well as the extraordinary explosion of Rebić's talent, who is a runner-up in the world and a player with a lot of experience, Milan has become much more mature and confident and as a result almost all players have changed for the better.

I asked the club in February to extend contract with Ibra. We had a gentleman's deal with nim. If he wasn't physically ready enough, he would choose to leave. Well, I was sure there would be no problems with him as Zlatan is aware of his abilities and knows his body best.

Ibra is a genius, has a strong personality and continues to make a difference. It is important that he remains for at least a year more. His importance for the club is undeniable and obvious. With his arrival, everything changed for the team, starting with the development of the young players. Just look at Rafael Leão, who has extraordinary talent, but needed a guide and had the best he could. For all this, we must thank Zlatan, who deserves respect.

MERCATO NEWS

By Isak Möller - 5 August 2020, 19:13

Although the season has just ended, the next one will start in a month’s time. AC Milan are thinking about the future and to compete for a Champions League spot, they need to reinforce their squad.

The Rossoneri finished 6th and will thus start their season with the playoffs for Europa League. Should they advance to the group stage, then they will compete in three competitions next season, meaning squad depth is needed.

According to Calciomercato.com, Stefano Pioli has asked Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara for a squad with important depth. This past season, the manager often opted for the same starting eleven, while he also struggled with some key absences.

Reinforcements will be needed, especially in the middle, where the lack of depth has been evident. Lucas Paqueta has failed to perform and Rade Krunic is destined to leave, just like Jack Bonaventura and Lucas Biglia.

In other words, as the report continues, reinforcements are needed for what will be a new-look midfield. Matteo Pessina and Tommaso Pobega are two players that could be part of the Rossoneri squad this upcoming season.

The first, of course, was a protagonist of Hellas Verona’s great season, scoring seven goals in 35 games and performing on a very high level. The other, meanwhile, has played an important role for Pordenone in the ongoing Serie B playoffs for promotion.

Young, talented and with costs that won’t weigh much on the budget (Pobega came from Milan’s academy), three characteristics that go well with the Elliott project. For Pessina, there was a meeting at Casa Milan on Monday with his agent.

The Rossoneri have a 50% resale clause for the midfielder, which means they can sign him for half the price compared to the other clubs interested. Meanwhile, evaluations are underway regarding Pobega, who could extend his contract until 2025.

He will finish his loan spell with Pordenone first, of course, but then he could join Milan’s first team for the pre-season. A decision will be made in the coming weeks.

🎙️Mirabelli:"I am proud of Calhanoglu's signing. I was sure he'd break through. Pioli suits his qualities. Kessie returned to his Atalanta levels. Conti was unlucky but still only 26 with his career ahead. Gabbia wanted to leave but his family convinced him to remain." https://t.co/btJ1uEMMpu

Mirabelli complimentary towards Elliott, Pioli and Maldini as he claims star is ‘worth €100m’

By Oliver Fisher - 6 August 2020, 15:55

Massimiliano Mirabelli has once again returned to talk about a number of topics related to his former club AC Milan.

Mirabelli joined Milan back in 2017 when Yonghong Li bought the club from Silvio Berlusconi, and oversaw a transfer campaign which saw Milan bring in a number of high-profile players for over €100million.

He has previously been outspoken about his time with the Rossoneri – such as having an agreement in place to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and the huge fine he gave to Leonardo Bonucci.

Now, a whole two years after leaving the club as Elliott Management seized control from Yonghong Li and fired him, Mirabelli has once again spoken out in an interview with Tuttosport. He was, for once, quite empathetic.

“Had I been in Elliott’s place, I would have done the same thing. When a new owner takes office in a club, he has the right to choose the collaborators he deems most appropriate,” he said (via MilanLive).

On Paolo Maldini, Mirabelli added: “He is working very well. I congratulate everyone and I am happy that the club has retraced its steps, confirming Stefano and no longer thinking of Rangnick. Pioli has earned the right on the pitch to continue to coach Milan.”

The former Rossoneri manager hopes for a new renewal of the contract for Gianluigi Donnarumma and is happy to have signed him in 2017.

“I am convinced that Milan and Donnarumma will make every effort to continue together along a path that will be paved with successes,” he continued.

“I say he’s worth 100 million and I’m not exaggerating. I am happy that it was me, three years ago, who convinced him to stay with the Rossoneri. Let’s say that this was the best gift I could have given to Milan.”

Mirabelli is also proud to see two players resurgent in Hakan Calhanoglu and Franck Kessie, the duo signed by him in the summer of 2017.

“Calhanoglu was a deal I’m proud of. I was sure he would break through: in Pioli he found the ideal coach to enhance his qualities. And then there is Kessie, back on Atalanta levels that led us to buy the card.”

The Calabrian manager is also convinced that Zlatan Ibrahimovic should be kept by Milan.

“Yes, without a doubt. The Swede is the leader that the team has been missing since the Nesta and Gattuso generation retired.”

According to the latest from Tuttosport (via MilanNews), Milan are ready to launch their assault on Fiorentina for Chiesa, and they have an offer in mind.

They will attempt to include attacking midfielder Lucas Paqueta to bring the cash sum down, and the Rossoneri want the 50% resale fee that Fiorentina are due from Eintracht Frankfurt for Ante Rebic’s sale to be removed too.

On this day 2 years ago, the legend Paolo Maldini returns to Milan as a sports director.

Which of the transfers carried out by this man was the best according to you?
