Three signings, four sales and a €10m net spend: Attempting to fix Milan’s defence

 Oliver Fisher

AC Milan’s defensive department looks like being one of the most intriguing areas for the management to try and fine tune in the summer window.

There are questions marks over a number of players at centre-back, right-back and left-back as well as some needs that simply must be addressed prior to the 2020-21 campaign – and ideally sooner rather than later.

Here, Oli Fisher takes a look at the current state of play and makes some recommendations…

Centre-back

Starting with the heart of the defence, there are three players who should instantly be deemed immovable: Alessio Romagnoli, Simon Kjaer and Matteo Gabbia. The first two need no explanation, and Gabbia should be kept around as he performed encouragingly when called upon this season, especially towards the end.

A full season in the senior side rotating with Romagnoli and/or Kjaer and learning from both would do Gabbia’s development the world of good. Only a dry loan to a Serie A side that players the right way (like a Sassuolo-type side, not Genoa) should even be remotely considered.

That leaves Leo Duarte and Mateo Musacchio. Both have had injury-riddled seasons and failed to impress much when called upon, but given the latter is 29 and therefore supposed to be in his prime, selling him for a fee of around €10m – most probably back to Spain – sounds like the best solution.

A loan shouldn’t be out of the question for Duarte. He needs to get regular minutes back into his legs, otherwise he should remain as a fifth choice.

Sales: Musacchio (€10m).

In terms of reinforcements, there are two or three targets that regularly do the rounds. Nikola Milenkovic continues to be linked, but if Fiorentina are really demanding €45m or more then the Rossoneri should stay well clear no matter how much Pioli wants him.

There are two more cost-effective options that actually make more sense on a technical level too. Marash Kumbulla of Hellas Verona is apparently available for €20-25m, and after a fantastic season with the Gialloblu it is no surprise to see him linked with Inter and Lazio.

The 20-year-old is much more likely to accept a rotation role if he were to arrive, and like Gabbia he could learn from the Romagnoli-Kjaer pairing to become one of the best in the league in future.

A player with similar potential and with a similar price tag is Wesley Fofana of Saint-Etienne. The Frenchman has been regularly linked with Milan and would also be a better, more economic option than Milenkovic, though we give the nod to Kumbulla purely for his Serie A experience.

Signings: Marash Kumbulla (€25m).

Right-back

This is a tough area to try and fix, because both Davide Calabria and Andrea Conti failed to impress for large stretches of the 2019-20 season.

Reports have suggested the former is more likely to depart than the latter due to the fact his sale would generate pure capital gains. Keeping the better player should always be the priority unless the economics are overwhelming, and in this case the most likely scenario is Conti being a lot harder to sell than Calabria.

For the Primavera graduate Milan should be trying to get €10-15m, because he is 23 and has shown over the past couple of seasons that he can succeed as part of a solid back four.

It should also be noted that Pierre Kalulu has arrived on a free transfer but is expected to begin his Milan career with the Primavera.

Sales: Calabria (€10m).

This is arguably the only area where a new starter is absolutely needed, and at the moment there appears to be three choices: Serge Aurier of Spurs, Emerson Royalof Barcelona or Denzel Dumfries of Barcelona.

Reports have suggested Spurs want north of €22m for Aurier, which is a fee that should not be even considered given his age and his inconsistency, regardless of the potential of reuniting him with Ibrahimovic after they played together at PSG. Salary is also an issue.

The €30m Barcelona are seemingly demanding for Emerson also makes him a hard pass. With Real Betis involved (the Brazilian is technically on loan there until 2021), the negotiation is too complicated with the various loan cancellation and resale fees that Milan would foot the bill for.

That means that – at a reported €18m – PSV captain Dumfries is the ideal option. That’s not just by process of elimination, either; the 24-year-old is a lung-busting full-back who contributes at both ends, is a physical unit and can shore up the right side will a set of characteristics that Conti and Calabria cannot touch.

There will be a period of adaptation of course, but Dumfries is a full-back that knows his responsibilities, as evidenced by the fact he wears the armband.

If an offer were to come in for Conti of over €10m it should be accepted too, and that money could go on a back-up that could come cheap like Paolo Ghiglione of Genoa, who has been a bright spot in a terrible season.

Signings: Dumfries (€18m).

Left-back

It goes without saying that Theo Hernandez will remain and will be untouchable in the starting XI, but the futures of both Diego Laxalt and Ricardo Rodriguez is far from certain.

Both are internationals for their respective countries and both are in their prime. The duo could do a job for plenty of other sides and it would be tough to swallow if Paolo Maldini and the management didn’t manage to get at least €15m combined for the pair.

It cannot be 100% excluded that one isn’t sold and therefore remains as a back-up, but it seems like both want to leave and the hunt for a deputy left-back is on.

Sales: Ricardo Rodriguez (€7m), Diego Laxalt (€8m).

The absolute stand-out to become Theo’s new back-up is Wigan’s Antonee Robinson. Although rumours have suggested he is close to joining Sheffield United, his most recent comments suggest nothing is sorted.

The USA international has a £1.5m (roughly €1.7m) release clause and previously accepted a move to Milan, so this is one that should be reignited without a doubt.

Signings: Antonee Robinson (€1.7m).

So to conclude, Milan would be selling four players for a combined sum of around €35m, and would secure big upgrades in each position by spending just less than €45m.

That, based on the idea of naming eight defenders in a matchday squad, would leave the following…

CB: Romagnoli, Kjaer, Kumbulla, Gabbia.
RB: Dumfries, Conti/Saelemaekers.
LB: Theo Hernandez, Robinson.

AC Milan are at work to sign Tiemoue Bakayoko after securing the signature of Hammarby striker Emil Roback, a journalist has claimed.

According to Sky Italia and TMW journalist Luca Marchetti (via MilanNews), the Rossoneri are beginning to work on some signings as well as the renewals of star duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Firstly, Emil Roback has signed his contract with Milan after undergoing final examinations on Thursday morning. In the meantime, the management are working to re-sign Tiemoue Bakayoko from Chelsea.

The current idea is that of a loan with option to buy. It would be a paid loan of €3m plus a €35m option fee, so a total operation of over €40m when factoring in wages too.

Another meeting is due at Casa Milan with Torino for Ricardo Rodriguez, too. The problem at the moment is a disagreement over the valuation of the Swiss international as Milan do not want to sell for less than €3.5m, whereas Torino only want to pay €2m.

AC Milan are interested in signing Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos this summer, according to a report from the UK.

Football Insider claim that Milan have been in contact with Rangers regarding the availability of the Colombia international, who was close to joining Ligue 1 side Lille before they turned to Jonathan David of Gent.

The report adds that the Rossoneri are ‘keen on exploiting the striker’s desire to play for a leading European club’ after three seasons in Glasgow, and it is speculated that €20m could be enough.

Morelos scored 14 goals in the Europa League in 2019-20 as well as 44 goals across his last three Scottish Premier League campaigns. He has 79 goals in all competitions since moving there in 2017.

Known for being hot-headed at times, the 24-year-old also faces an uncertain future at Ibrox due to the arrival of another forward in Kemar Roofe.

Milan meanwhile have been linked with various attacking options this summer, but reports have suggested a move for a deputy to Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be the only centre-forward movement this summer.

The chances of AC Milan signing Florentino Luis have faded as Benfica want to keep the player and help him grow, it is claimed.

The Rossoneri’s midfield department looks set to undergo changes this summer, as Lucas Biglia has left and Rade Krunic is attracting interest from Torino, while Lucas Paqueta could also leave.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) reported earlier today that Milan have not given up on the idea of signing Florentino to reinforce the midfield, who is valued at €30million by Benfica.

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio for Sky Italia though (via MilanNews), a meeting is underway between Jorge Jesus – the new Benfica boss – and Florentino’s agent.

Jesus would like to keep the player and rely on him for next season, so much so that the 20-year-old could also renew his contract and firm up his commitment to the Lisbon-based club.

Therefore the chances of Florentino moving to San Siro are now slim, while Milan are focusing on Chelsea’s Tiemoue Bakayoko for the moment.

AC Milan and Everton are both interested in a move for Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic, according to one journalist.

It is no secret that the Rossoneri are in the market for a new centre-back this summer with doubts over the future of Mateo Musacchio and Leo Duarte, the latter of whom could leave on loan.

At the moment the player who is strongest linked with a move to Milan is Fiorentina’s Nikola Milenkovic, a player Stefano Pioli worked with during his time as head coach of La Viola, though it seems his compatriot is also attracting interest.

According to what Ciro Venerato has told CalcioNapoli24, Milan are one of four clubs who are interested in Nikola Maksimovic, a 28-year-old defender who made 22 league appearances for Napoli last season.

He is apparently valued at €15m by the Neapolitans, but there is also interest from Everton, Roma and Fiorentina to compete with.

AC Milan could well dip into the market to secure a new back-up goalkeeper this summer as the future of a duo is uncertain, a report claims.

As it stands, the Rossoneri have four goalkeepers on their books for the senior side: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Antonio Donnarumma, Pepe Reina and Alessandro Plizzari.

Multiple reports have suggested the latter is set to depart and join Reggina in Serie B on loan, while the Donnarumma brothers are likely to remain with a new contract currently being discussed for Gigio.

According to Tuttosport on Thursday (via MilanNews), Pepe Reina is wanted by Valencia and should his sale go through, Milan are likely look for a new goalkeeper on the transfer market who will be the deputy to Donnarumma.

The paper adds though that it cannot be excluded that the management try to sign Asmir Begovic on a permanent basis from Bournemouth after the Bosnia international spent the second half of the 2019-20 season at San Siro.

AC Milan have entered a ‘waiting phase’ regarding defensive target Nikola Milenkovic, a report claims, as Fiorentina continue to ask for a high price.

Milenkovic continues to be the summer target that the Rossoneri are being most persistently linked with – along with perhaps Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayok – as Stefano Pioli has apparently asked for defensive reinforcements.

According to Tuttosport on Thursday (via MilanNews), Milan’s primary target for the rearguard is indeed Milenkovic and it has come at the request of Pioli, who coached the Serbia international during his time with La Viola from 2017-19.

However, there is a big obstacle at the moment as Fiorentina owner and president Rocco Commisso is continuing to ask for €40million to let the 22-year-old leave, a figure Milan deem to be excessive.

With his contract set to expire in 2022 and no signs of an imminent renewal, Milan have apparently begun a ‘waiting game’ to see if they can drive the price down.

The figures that @acmilan will have pay are different (between 18-23 Million Euroes), but both agree that @TimoeB08 agreed to lower his salary and that everything is almost done... https://t.co/0sytX1osid

AC Milan have agreed a pact with winger Ante Rebic regarding personal terms for the upcoming seasons, according to a report.

Rebic arrived at Milan late in the summer transfer window last year on a two-year dry loan, with Andre Silva joining Eintracht Frankfurt on the same terms in what was essentially a swap deal.

After struggling up until the winter break, the 26-year-old exploded, scoring 11 Serie A goals in 2020 alone to be crowned the club’s top scorer for the campaign.

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia (via MilanNews ), Milan have signed a pact with Rebic, and the Rossoneri management has found an agreement with the Croatian regarding his salary if he were to stay beyond his loan.

With personal terms out of the way, it is now up to Milan to negotiate with Eintracht Frankfurt over the terms of his permanent arrival, with the knowledge that Fiorentina have a 50% resale clause which makes matters a bit more complicated.
