SM Exclusive: Torino insider lifts the lid on Meite – playing style, strengths, weakness and potential
By Oliver Fisher - 18 January 2021, 17:06
AC Milan welcomed their first recruit of the winter mercato on Friday night as Soualiho Meite joined on loan with an option to buy from Torino.

Despite the fact he has been in Serie A for over two years now, he arrives as somewhat of an unknown quantity to many fans given that he has been plying his trade in a team that has struggled a bit in that time.

We spoke to Matteo Pedrosi of the Corriere Granata to get the low-down on what we can expect from Meite, while you can also read our player analysis here.

Could you please give a brief assessment of the type of player we are getting and what positives he can offer?

“If we make a technical-tactical consideration, I think Meité is a useful reinforcement for Milan, I think he can be functional to Pioli’s way of playing, he can represent a valid alternative to Kessié, but he could also play alongside him if needed,” Pedrosi told us.

“He has the advantage of being a modern midfielder, with good technique, physical strength, good control and dominance (or coverage) of the ball. But he also has defects: he is inconsistent, he does not always play concentrated (some of his lapses have been fatal), sometimes he tends to overdo it when he has the ball between his feet, sometimes he sins in excessive affectation and in this he has not improved since his arrival at Torino.

“He has important numbers, precisely because he has a good technical quality and control, but sometimes he unnecessarily exceeds in dribbling, rarely affecting the finishing. Some statistics I have read are likely to be misleading if extrapolated individually.

“However, I repeat, his task at Milan will be different, so I believe he can be useful to the cause. In Giampaolo’s Torino he did not perform because he was employed in a role that was not congenial to him: for the reasons I listed above I do not think he is a mezzala, he does not fit in continuously, he rarely shoots and he is not a man to make the last pass. He had some decisive assists but did not have consistency.”

La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Juventus have practically agreed terms with Sassuolo for Gianluca Scamacca, signing the striker for €20-25m.

It will be a loan with obligation to buy after 18 months, a way of spreading out the cost of the operation.

Tacchinardi: 'Juve must avoid a delicate situation'
Football Italia30 Minutes Ago

Comments
Former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi said a ‘red light’ has been lit for coach Andrea Pirlo and that the Bianconeri ‘must turn it off immediately’.

The Old Lady get a chance to bounce back against Napoli in the Supercoppa Italiana on Wednesday, and the 45-year-old highlighted Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘sarcastic grimace of surrender’ in the 2-0 defeat to Inter on Sunday.

“If anyone comes out with doubts, it’s hard,” Tacchinardi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “First of all, you need to find the key to Ronaldo, because I didn’t like Cristiano’s smile after Inter’s 2-0 goal.

“It seemed like a sarcastic grimace of surrender. I played with the best, like Ibra, and the convey everything: happiness, determination, but also tension.

“You can lose, but that’s not the case with Juventus. A red light came on for the coach and the club. It must be turned off immediately in the Supercoppa Italiana tomorrow, otherwise it becomes a delicate situation.”

The former midfielder, who played 404 games with the Bianconeri between 1994 and 2007, said he expects ‘more of the Juve spirit’ from players like Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot.

“Ramsey and Rabiot arrived to make the leap in quality but it never came. I would like to see a little more of the Juve spirit of from them.

“We have seen little from Arthur [Melo] and [Dejan] Kulusevski needs to find more stability.”

Juventus are fifth in Serie A after 17 games, seven points behind Inter with one game in hand.

The paper (via MilanNews) awards Ibrahimovic with a 7.5 out of 10, remarking that the Swede was ‘the best, without a shadow of a doubt’.

It was a grade of 7 for Calabria, and half a point less for Donnarumma, Kalulu, Dalot and Kessié. Romagnoli, Tonali and Diaz all received a 6, while Castillejo and Hauge were criticised (5.5 for both).

The worst score went to Saelemaekers as the Belgian got a four as he ‘leaves his team in under-numbered after 9 minutes on the field’

📊 Zlatan Ibrahimovic has missed 10 of Milan's 18 league games this season. He has 12 goals in 8 games, including goals in all 7 of his starts. Only Ronaldo has more in Serie A in 2020/21. He has five braces, is still undefeated, and his goals have earned first-placed Milan 13 points.
39 years old by the way 😏
