One thing that was almost lost in the drama of last night’s game was the fact that Fikayo Tomori made his debut for the club.

He came on in the first half as Simon Kjaer went off with a muscle problem, with the Englishman having only joined on Friday, but he did an assured job at the back alongside Alessio Romagnoli.

As MilanLive recalls, his best intervention was on Lukaku, shortly after the start of the second half. A low cross came from the right and Tomori reached out and intercepted the ball that was heading goalwards off Lukaku. His physicality was fundamental to mark the Belgian in open play and on set pieces.

The newspapers also gave Tomori a great deal of prause. La Gazzetta dello Sport went cautiously with a rating of 6 out of 10 which is followed by an excellent description of his game. Tuttosport and il Corriere dello Sport gave him a 6.5 as it was not easy to come into such a situation and do well.

La Gazzetta stated: ā€œDebut with personality, this cannot be denied. A couple of entrances to make it clear that he is the defender. He could also have failed, given the situation, it was his debut, it was the derby, but he held up. And the impression is that he will be useful.ā€

There were three major incidents that decided the outcome of last night’s Coppa Italia Derby della Madonnina, and all three went against the Rossoneri.

We begin with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s second yellow card. Totally discounting the fact that Romelu Lukaku should have seen red for refusing to stop pursuing the Swede after their altercation – which was another error – the second yellow from Valeri is a shocker.

As the replay clearly shows, the player – if any – who brings down Kolarov is in fact Brahim Diaz. Kolarov is the one who kicks Ibrahimovic as his leg moves back.

Then, the penalty incident. There is no clear angle to show that there was obvious contact or certainly enough to bring Barella down, which means that the on-field decision of no penalty should have remained given VAR is in place to eliminate ā€˜clear and obvious errors’ and not to aid exaggeration from attackers as happened last night.

Finally, the ā€˜foul’ for the free-kick leading to the goal. As the clip below shows, Lautaro Martinez in fact kicks the back of his own foot and flops to the floor.

AC Milan should welcome back three players for Saturday’s trip to face Bologna, a report claims, with one of them being a star man.

Milan were without six key players for the Coppa Italia quarter-final defeat to Inter last night as Gianluigi Donnarumma was suspended, while Matteo Gabbia, Ismael Bennacer, Hakan Calhanoglu (COVID-19), Mario Mandzukic and Sandro Tonali all missed out too.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), the selection issues should ease a bit ahead of this weekend’s trip to face an old friend in Sinisa Mihajlovic and his Bologna side at the Stadio Renato dall’Ara/

That is because three players will return from injury, as Sandro Tonali, Mario Mandzukic and Ismael Bennacer should recover. Of course, we are also still waiting for Hakan Calhanoglu to return negative tests, which could come at any moment in theory.

There appears to have been some back story behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s decision to keep calling Romelu Lukaku a donkey last night.

As MilanLive reports, there are absolutely no racial undertones in using the word ā€˜donkey’ to describe another professional, because in this case Ibrahimovic is providing a throwback to when the pair were team-mates back in England.

Donkey is a word that in England (in footballing terms) is also used to define players with physical presence but poor in ball control, passing or shooting.

This is something that Ibrahimovic – during his time at Manchester United – had called Lukaku out on. During the 2017-18 season season, Zlatan revealed that he had made a bet with the Belgian.

ā€œI’ll give you 50 pounds for every good first touch,ā€ he said, as per the report. When the current Inter striker asked him what he would get in return, the Swede replied: ā€œNothing, I just make you a better player!ā€

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has been forced to go back to the drawing board as he has yet another selection crisis to deal with.

According to what is being reported by our correspondent Pietro Balzano Prota, Simon Kjaer has sustained a problem with the femoral rectal muscle in his left thigh and will be re-evaluated with an MRI in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, Brahim Diaz has problem with his left thigh too and has already started treatment and will be monitored according to the evolution of the situation.

As reported by Peppe Di Stefano for Sky (via MilanNews), Stefano Pioli is evaluating different options for the role of attacking midfielder given the current unavailability of Calhanoglu and now Brahim Diaz.

Among the hypotheses evaluated include the potential for Daniel Maldini to play the playmaker role, but also Rafael Leao or Mario Mandzukic who can be adapted in this position.

Fikayo Tomori is presented today in a press conference to the media. Here are his statements:

What do you think of your first days with AC Milan?

ā€œI am very happy to be here. We are in a positive moment, I want to give all my contribution. I will give everything on the pitch with great desire and determination.ā€

In the derby, in addition to you, there were many former Premier League players on the pitch

ā€œEven in the Premier League, matches are played with great aggression. Derbies are always very intense matches.ā€

On the choice of Milan:

ā€œMany great defenders have played at Milan such as Maldini, Nesta and Baresi. I want to be part of the history of Milan, since the first day I have breathed in the tradition of this club. I am convinced that I made the right decision to come here, I want to participate in the AC Milan successes.ā€

Do you believe in the Scudetto?

ā€œWe are currently first in the league table and therefore we must believe in winning the championship title. It would be a great achievement. We should not be afraid of talking about the Scudettoā€

What did Maldini tell you to convince you to accept Milan’s offer?

ā€œMaldini was one of the greatest defenders ever. He surprised me when he called me, but I didn’t think long before I said yes.ā€

What can you tell us about Lampard?

ā€œHe was my mentor, I had a wonderful time with him I’ve always been with him since I was a child. Now, however, I’m at Milan and I’m focused only on the Rossoneri.ā€

How was it to change teams and even countries?

ā€œThey came here to Italy but despite the language barrier they all helped me a lot to communicate with the coach, it was an easy adaptation. Then I always wanted to have a new experience, being here in Milan and in Italy is the best place to grow as a person and as a footballer.ā€

What are the differences between English and Italian football?

ā€œThere are differences on a technical-tactical level. The English one is more aggressive and physical, but here I have to be more attentive to tactics. However, I am also here to improve. I am ready to listen to all the advice that Maldini, the coach and the comrades give me.ā€
