Bennacer makes promising declaration regarding condition and insists Milan will play for the Scudetto

By Oliver Fisher - 1 April 2021, 18:09

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer has vowed that the team will fight for first place in the table and not just for a top four spot.

After his rehearsal in Florence, the Algerian could find a starting spot in the next league match against Sampdoria after having warmed up his engines with the national team. He did do so without overdoing it too, because a relapse would have been disastrous at this stage of the season given the time he has already missed.

Bennacer was rested for the match against Zambia last week, but he started and played 60 minutes in a 5-0 win over Botswana in an African Cup of Nations qualifier. Milan actually made agreements with the Algeria coach not to force the young midfielder to play too much, because the club does not want to take any chances.

Bennacer spoke to Sky Italia about his physical condition and targets for the rest of the season, with his comments transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

On the break with the national teams and his condition: “I went to Algeria to play the second game, 60 minutes. I am very well, it has been a long time since I have been so well.

“There are 10 games to go and I, like the whole team, have to give 200%. These are the last steps to try to reach something great. We don’t play to be second or third but to try to be first. We want to get to the best of our chance, then let’s see what happens.”

On Milan as a club: “Milan are a great team with a lot of fans. We want to give everything to the end for them.”

Pioli: “Milan are one of the surprises of the championship”

2 April 2021
AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has spoken in the press conference earlier today ahead of the game opposing AC Milan to Sampdoria this Saturday in Serie A. Here are his statements:

On whether responsibilities increase at this stage:
“We have always taken responsibility with great conviction and trust. There comes a decisive moment, all we have done so far is to be here right now.

All the games will be difficult and we have to give our best, we want to get to the end of the season without regrets, playing for Milan“.

On how the players are doing after these two weeks:
“If I could, I would have given everyone holidays, we needed this break. The five forward players who remained are fine, those who returned from the national team are back in good condition, except Brahim Diaz who has problems and we will evaluate him tonight”
On tomorrow’s game:

“We totally believe in what we do. Serenity, trust is our way of working. Ten games are a lot, the fight will be very hard, we have to think about tomorrow’s match. It is important, difficult, against a team motivated and trained by a great coach, I respect him because he was the coach who gave me the most in my coaching career.”
On the renewal situation:

“The serenity I see in the eyes of Zlatan, Calha, Gigio, the players who are negotiating the renewal. Their future is now for us, it would change everything for us to go or not to go to the Champions League, I see a lot of concentration and attention”

On how many points are missing for the Champions League:
“We still have a lot of points to score. 75 could be the right threshold, but it is difficult to calculate.”
On the difference between home and away:

“Our home numbers are significantly lower than away numbers. This is why it becomes important to return to winning in our stadium.”

On injuries:
“Tomorrow we will not have everyone available, we are still far from what I would like. We hope to get close as early as the next one, we want to have no regrets and we believe that the ten matches must be played with great decision“.
On Ibra:

“Ibra is fine, we felt like we were with the others on a daily basis. He is happy to be back in the national team and available with us. He did two high level training sessions, he arrived in very good condition. Everything is fine“.
On whether Bennacer and Kessie will be back together:

“We must have rhythm in the game, try to be compact when the opponents are in possession and move a lot with the ball. Isma in reading the spaces and in verticalising is an important player for us.”
On Hauge:

“He had a physical tarnish but it is physiological, he arrived when the season in Norway was about to end and he was more brilliant for the others. In these two days I have seen him in good condition“.

On the future of Tomori:
“We are very satisfied with how he has entered, he is a handsome smiling boy, he gives us important characteristics. We must continue to do well, without thinking about the future.

We have to think about tomorrow’s game, it will be complicated, the stops take away some preparation to the game. Let’s focus on this game and then we’ll think about the future.”
On the physical condition in this season finale:

“The team is doing well, they arrive at the right time with the right condition. Fiorentina’s performance was very important in terms of character, against a good opponent. We tried to play the game and get it back. We have to make a strong performance above all. from a mental point of view. I don’t think of a perfect game. It will be a game where we will have to work a lot.”

On the team talking about the Scudetto:
“The team has to think like this, God forbid you think negatively, then we know very well that we have to turn hopes into convincing performances, winning is difficult, but the team must go out on the pitch with confidence and awareness“.
On the management’s say about renewals:

“I have daily contacts with the management, we are focused on tomorrow’s game and on the next ones, we will think about the future later“.

Pioli admits to feeling ‘disappointed and embittered’ in analysis of frustrating draw against Sampdoria
By Oliver Fisher - 3 April 2021, 15:07
AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli has admitted that he is not happy with the result or the performance in the 1-1 draw against Sampdoria.

There was plenty of optimism heading into the game as Milan looked to continue from where they left off before the international break, having won 3-2 away against Fiorentina in the previous round.

However, it was yet another poor home performance from Pioli’s men. Having been dominated for most of the first half, the away side took what was in truth a deserved lead when Quagliarello lobbed Donnarumma after Theo’s sloppy giveaway.

Substitute Jens Petter Hauge did come on and rescue a late point for Milan against the 10 men of Sampdoria following Adrien Silva’s red card, but a winner did not arrive.

Pioli was interviewed by Milan TV at the end of the game, and revealed that he is struggling to take the positives from the performance, with his words transcribed by MilanNews.

On the idea that Milan didn’t do enough to win: “I completely agree even if we could have done it with Kessie in the final moments. We did too little, we played with little rhythm and our approach was not the right one. It was a complicated match for us.

“Sampdoria played in the same way they played in the first game. Today there was less rhythm, we favoured their defense which was well placed. Today I struggle to be happy, the performance had to be different, there were all the right situations to play with more intensity and quality. This must make us disappointed and embittered, now we have to show that we can start off well right away.”

On Hauge: “I hope Jens gains even more confidence, he scored an important goal for the team. It will help him to become convinced in his own means.”

On the starting line-up: “I made choices based on the players who played a lot for the national team. Everything is open to criticism, after such a performance it is not a question of a player or a position. The team did not offer a performance up to par.”

On Saelemaekers at full-back: “I think he has good characteristics to do well in that role there, especially when the team leads the game. I thought I’d attack more and have a bit more qualitative development on the flanks with full-back.”
