Throwback to this Nesta tackle on Messi in the Champions League vs Barcelona in the 2011/2012 season.

Nesta was 35 years old at the time (near retirement) defending against a Messi that was in his goalscoring prime (91-goal year of 2012).

#IlGiorno: #Milan municipality awaits #Milan and #Inter's official step backwards regarding the construction of the new stadium.

Gleison #Bremer to #Gazzetta: "AC Milan has made significant moves in the transfer market by bringing in players like #Pulisic and #LoftusCheek. They know how to play with the ball, they are good in tough situations, and they have strong attackers. They will fight for the title with Inter and Napoli, but we are there too."

Ruben Loftus-Cheek:

"During these weeks, we are learning to put on the field what [Pioli] asks of us, he wants a very aggressive and offensive style of football, with a fluid play.

We want to have the ball at our feet, we have the qualities to build everything the coach demands: the more we play, the more we can fine-tune the automations and the connection between us."

Update from @MatteMoretto:

Yunus Musah will arrive in Milano TOMORROW, with medical tests and contract signing scheduled for Thursday.

Musah is a box-to-box midfielder — at Valencia when they played 4-3-3, he played on the right of the CDM and whenever they would defend, Musah would form a double pivot with the CDM to help.

Here’s a paragraph from an analysis article last month plus an image of Musah showing how he plays with the ball where he runs down the right side as a box-to-box for Valencia:

“Gattuso wants to see me touching the ball more, and he gives us clear ideas to be able to play,” Musah said after a few weeks working with the former Napoli coach. He deployed Musah and Nicolás González as number 8s in a 4-3-3 with Hugo Guillamón sitting behind them. Guillamón, a centre-back turned defensive midfielder, handled most of the defensive work with Musah joining him when out of possession to make a double pivot. This gave Musah license to play a box-to-box role with the kind of nuances that set him apart.

Musah saw career highs in touches, total carries (14.2), long progressive carries (4.8), passes in his own half (12.9), passes into the final third (4.5) and successful passes in the opposition half (19.4) under Gattuso.

@AntoVitiello: If #Krunic were to leave #Milan, his replacement could be #Dominguez.

AC Milan have been by far and away the biggest spenders in Serie A so far this summer but it was necessary to rebuild the squad.

As Antonio Vitiello reports for MilanNews, Milan have spent over €110m on transfer fees (counting the imminent arrival of Yunus Musah) plus €20m in bonuses and they have bought eight players

The three names to replace BalloToure :Calafiori (first choice), Rogerio and Pellegrini (the most secluded)

@86_longo: #Marseille are not interested in De #Ketelaere but a Spanish club is interested in the player.

🚨 On De Ketelaere there is Real Sociedad and also another Spanish team. We reason on the basis of the loan with right of redemption @cmdotcom

Noah Okafor opened up about his ambitions with the club, the backstory to his move and his best role on the pitch. Speaking on page eight of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport, Okafor first spoke about his early thoughts on life at Milan.

“There is a great atmosphere here, the team is fantastic, and the coach is doing very well. I recently signed for Milan but I’m very happy, I’m really confident for the future.”

He was asked if he was ready to try and win the Scudetto.

“Yes, also because a footballer who doesn’t want to win… is not a footballer. We have a strong team and I hope to win Serie A right away. To do this you always need energy, sometimes you lose games, but you learn from defeats. Besides, I hate losing.”

The 23-year-old explained why he decided to join the Rossoneri, despite interest from across Europe.

“Because they wanted me a lot. In the autumn I played against Milan in the Champions League, and we have been in contact ever since. It’s clear that I had other offers but for me everything was always clear. The fans, the San Siro stadium, everything, it’s a new step for my growth.”

Okafor reflected on his childhood and family life.

“Yes, I’ve only been to Nigeria twice, but I was younger, it’s been a long time. My dad arrived in Germany when he was 17, then he went to Switzerland. I learned from him, he always told me to be happy, to smile, to transmit positive energy and to fight hard for my goals.”

The 23-year-old was asked about his ‘be your own hero’ tattoo.

“Because I think I can decide every day what I want to do. It just depends on me, I’m my own boss and I know what I want.

“The tattoo was born from this thought. I want to do my best both in training and in matches. Always train hard to take the next step and improve.”

He confirmed that he’s had a mental coach since he was a teenager.

“Yes, I think it’s important for a young player. With this life we always have pressure on and off the pitch, talking to someone is really important to me.”

The Swiss striker spoke about some of his other tattoos.

“The faces belong to my brothers. Two boys, younger than me, playing football, one in Germany, one in Switzerland. And an older sister.

“For my brothers I am an idol, they want to be like me, and I took care of them as a child, we have a great relationship.”

Okafor discussed his relationship with Milan star Rafael Leao.

“Yes, Rafa and I are like twins, we both dribble very well, we are young, we have the same humour.

“We spoke for the first time after a match between Switzerland and Portugal, then we exchanged messages after the double challenge in the Champions League and we were also opponents in the World Cup. We have a good relationship, I can’t wait to play with him.”

He provided an update on his fitness.

“I’m fine, I’ve been out in the last few weeks but from next week I’ll be in the squad.”

The 23-year-old was brief when asked of the issue of racism in Italian football came into his thinking ahead of the move.

“No.”

The striker revealed the backstory behind his move to the Rossoneri.

“Milan remained in contact with me for six to nine months, contacts that became more intense in the last two weeks.

“They saw that I was fine, then everything was done in three-four days and… here I am.”

He explained why he chose the number 17.

“7 is my favourite number, in fact in Salzburg I had 77. Here the 7 was taken from Adli, so I chose 17, which is Rafa’s old number. I like it.”

Okafor discussed some of the stars of Milan’s past.

“Milan are a great club, with a great history. They’ve had many stars, great players but even now we are very strong, young, hungry.

“If I have to choose, I’ll say Ronaldinho, Kakà and Gullit. I’m still young but I want to help this team make history again.”

He spoke about his role on the pitch.

“I can play on the left, on the right and as a forward in the centre. I’m flexible. I have to adapt to a new country, with new tactics and new teams but I’ve already been there with RB Salzburg. I try to be open with my teammates and the staff, I’m really happy to be here.”

Finally, Okafor was asked if he’s spoken to Mike Maignan and Pierre Kalulu regarding a goal he scored against Milan last season.

“Mike told me it was luck because the ball passed between his legs, but dribbling past Kalulu is unquestionable, I looked for it. And then… a goal is always a goal.”

AC Milan have made eight reinforcements this summer and three of them have been for the attack. Taking a look at the players who are currently at Stefano Pioli’s disposal, the attacking focus is clear.

As highlighted by today’s edition of Corriere Dello Sport (see photo below), Milan have clearly made investments for the attack. Combining the goals of the attacking signings and the Milan forwards last season, we have a total of 70 goals.

Olivier Giroud bagged 18 goals in all competitions last season, while Rafael Leao found the back of the net 16 times. Samuel Chukwueze, who will meet his teammates for the first time tomorrow, bagged 13 goals for Villarreal.

Noah Okafor scored 10 goals for RB Salzburg and Tijjani Reijnders, although he is technically a midfielder, bagged 7 for AZ Alkmaar. Finally, we have the return of Lorenzo Colombo, who scored 6 goals for Lecce.

Milan struggled to find the back of the net last season and it’s clear that the management has been focusing on strengthening the attacking department this summer. Pioli will certainly have more tactical solutions for the upcoming season, even off the bench which was one of the main flaws last season.

Christian Pulisic only got one goal for Chelsea last season (not included in the 70 tally) but it’s clear that he also could be a very important player in attack for Milan.

According to various outlets, Milan’s shortlist of midfielders to replace Krunic, ranked from most likely to least likely, include:

  • Nicolas Dominguez (Bologna)
  • Ibrahima Sissoko (Strasbourg)
  • Federico Redondo (Argentinos Juniors)
  • Marten de Roon (Atalanta)
  • Jerdy Schouten (Bologna)
