Just days ago, Ronald Karauri raised concerns about building safety in Eastleigh, warning that structures found to be unsafe should be subjected to fresh inspections and, where necessary, demolished before they collapse and claim lives.

Now, those concerns have taken on renewed urgency following reports of another building collapse in Eastleigh, Nairobi. A video circulating online appears to show a nine-storey building collapsing, with reports indicating that people may be trapped beneath the rubble.

Karauri had called for authorities to conduct a fresh round of structural safety inspections, arguing that buildings should be assessed individually to determine whether they can safely remain standing. He maintained that structures that pass the inspections should be allowed to stand, while those found to be dangerous should face appropriate intervention.

He also distinguished between zoning violations and structural safety, noting that buildings exceeding approved height limits may have altered Nairobi’s intended development plan, but that immediate action should focus on structures posing a direct threat to human life.
