What has Kidero done for Nairobi?
He is a hero to you because he happens to support prince Kenyatta. Not to long ago you were singing, "Waititu for Gavana."
Land reform: Part of the reason Kenyans fought in 2007. The Kenyattas still own over 600, 000 acres, illegally acquired by their father. A few families still own most of Rift Valley and Central. The majority of Kikuyus are still landless!
In your little world, a good Kenyan is one serving the Mt Kenya mafia.
You're yet to understand Nairobians. There is a difference between them and whatever village you came from before locating to US. Kidero has done a lot especially getting rid of the rot that was in previous city hall. In Nairobi, we might have our political differences, but when it comes to service delivery, we don't care about your affiliations.
Kidero has been bold enough to address the county's unmanageable wage bill while at the same time building the capacity of the current workforce by encouraging county staff to improve their education via various programs.
He found the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) had been signed by his predecessors in the defunct City Council of Nairobi that blew the wage bill to Sh800m from Sh540m.
Nairobi's transport infrastructure was designed in the 1970s for a city of one million people. It is estimated that there are now about 700,000 cars in Nairobi, a figure which has more than doubled from the 330,000 counted in 2012.
The Governor has already instituted a revamp of the City's engineering department, traffic marshals were recruited and are already on the road. The county has mobilized stimulus funds to rehabilitate and repair of roads in all the 85 wards in Nairobi City County.
Preparations for a major Traffic Management Master Plan Study are under way with funds from the World Bank. It is expected that implementation of the recommendations of the study will begin this year and will culminate in the establishment of a world class traffic management system for Nairobi.
There are also plans to establish the Nairobi Metropolitan Transport Authority which will be a "joint venture" between Nairobi and the neighboring counties of Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Muranga. The Bill for the establishment of the Authority, expected to be in place by December 31, 2014, is soon to be tabled in the National Assembly under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
The governor also established a transport and urban decongestion committee, whose mandate was to review all existing termini with a view to create a vibrant, safe, secure and reliable transport system in Nairobi, explore the viability of Nairobi Metropolitan Transport System, create a policy on pedestrian crossing and how to encourage pedestrians to use foot bridges as well as formulate and develop a Nairobi County Transport Policy.
Kidero is leading a Public Private Partnership push to carry out a comprehensive urban renewal which will ensure optimal land utilization; provide affordable housing and; revitalize socio-economic development and physical infrastructure.
The County Government is currently working on the revitalization of Pumwani, Mbagathi and Mutuini hospitals. Pumwani is awaiting the installation of a high dependency unit and the drilling for a bore hole. At Mutuini a Sh60 million maternity wing is in the offing. Pumwani has also received two new ambulances and Mbagathi hospital one as well.
Kidero's government has improved water production from 480,000 cubic metres per day and improved delivery to informal settlements. In education the county has partnered with Zuku, Microsoft and others to equip young children in public schools with ICT skills.
The governor is leading the county into a digital future via the Nairobi City County ICT Transformation Project which will include an e-payment solution, data center, network infrastructure, web portal and e-mail messaging solution and other service improvement technology.
The private partner in the e-payment project will be announced soon as the tender process is in the advanced stages. These are just snippets of how a Governor of Nairobi should lead.
I fear there is not enough space to adequately educate Mr Ndolo- without monopolizing the whole paper and I urge him to walk to the County Assembly and confirm the number of bills passed into law are more than those passed with the national assembly because of Kidero's cordial working relationships with the MCAs whom Ndolo alleges are out to impeach him.
