I can say mathematics is a branch of science due the fact that maths when u look physics, chemistry and biology has elements of maths

Why maths is not art?
That is it. Scientists use systematic approaches to gain knowledge about an area of inquiry. Knowledge so gained is normally generalised and constantly reviewed by other scientists to establish its veracity.
However, in order to make an inquiry in any particular area the inquirer must have a certain belief about the reality of the area of inquiry. Here we mean that the researcher must have somehow declared in his mind and hopefully openly whether the reality he or she is going to investigate is independent of his or her mind (that it the reality is out there) or a product of his own mind. This is called ontology which is a branch of metaphysics. I can give an example, if a scientist wants to investigate the attributes of a stone called "granite" it is clear that the granite will present itself in the same way to every inquirer under certain conditions. This may not be true about a scientist who wants to investigate a social phenomena such as marriage rituals in Africa. There will be differences even in the same tribe. Most of the work will involve interpreting what is going on and no two people can have the same interpretation. Besides, the observed may change their actions the moment the feel that they are being observed or "spied".
That is why It is always important to establish the ontological assumptions of the researcher. Following the ontological assumptions are the epistemological assumptions - that is establishing what can be known about the phenomena and then the methodology of going about knowing it.
It is based on these that I may say that is why we have the three broad areas of sciences: Natural sciences, biological sciences and social sciences. They differ on their ontological and epsistemological assumptions and hence the methodologies of carrying out research. The aims of carrying out research also differ from generalising (establishing general laws) to simply understanding/interpreting the phenomena.
