JamboPay CEO Danson Muchemi was recognised as this year's Innovator of the Year at the CNBC Africa Business Leaders Awards.
JamboPay is an electronics payments firm that collects revenue for the Nairobi government. City Hall has automated payments that have seen residents pay using their phones and the Internet.
Muchemi said he was excited that his team was recognised for efforts in digital payments across East Africa.
"The award is a challenge for us to keep working hard to solve social issues facing our society," he said.
Muchemi and Chandaria industries' Darshan Chandaria received awards at the ceremony held in Kigali, Rwanda, on Saturday.
The two were the only Kenyans in the seven categories of people who were awarded.
Chandaria was honoured as the Young Business Leader of the Year.
Nairobi collected Sh6 billion through the JamboPay system that was introduced last year.
Shaban Makokha, head of revenue collection at City Hall, said overall revenues have increased.

Traders, including hawkers, will also start paying market fees through the JamboPay e-payment system.
This means all payments will be done electronically and those in charge of the markets will not be allowed to collect cash.
