May 14: Sarr allegedly rapes a sleeping woman after an alcohol-fuelled night of partying in Molde. He denies any wrongdoing.
June 2: After news emerges police are investigating an unnamed Molde player, Solskjær tells newspaper Romsdals Budstikke there is “no reason” not to pick Sarr because he has been neither charged nor convicted. Sarr even captains the side on at least one occasion.
2018
March 23: Sarr is formally charged with rape in the Molde case.
June: A woman comes forward claiming she had given birth to a child conceived when Sarr raped her while she slept in 2014.
August 11: Solskjaer tells online newspaper Nettavisen Molde have “chosen to trust the player” when quizzed about the decision to pick him.
August 13: Amid criticism of his comments and their potential impact on the case, Solskjaer says he had not intended his comments to imply Sarr’s innocence but to express “trust” in his ability to perform during the case.
August 14: Sarr’s trial begins.
August 17: Sarr is acquitted of the crime of rape. The case split the three judges presiding over it, with the professional judge disagreeing with the verdict of his two lay colleagues. The same trio nevertheless order Sarr to pay his accuser compensation of 150,000 Norwegian kroner (around £12,500) after ruling in her favour on the balance of probabilities. Both sides appeal.
November 25: After continuing to be picked by Solskjaer, Sarr allegedly rapes the same woman twice in Oslo after Molde’s final game of the season.
December 19: Solskjaer is appointed caretaker manager of Manchester United until the end of their season, with an undertaking to return to Molde afterwards.
2019
January 18: Sarr’s Molde contract is terminated by mutual consent.
February 5: Russian Premier League club Yenisey Krasnoyarsk announce Sarr’s signing.
February 14: The appeal hearing into Sarr’s acquittal is postponed after a key prosecution witness, a former Molde team-mate, chooses to play a friendly match for his Danish club instead of attending.
June 11: Saudi Arabian club Damac FC announce the signing of Sarr a day before he is scheduled to attend a rearranged appeal hearing. It also emerges that an international arrest warrant has been issued for him amid fears he will not show up. He duly fails to do so. Neither Russia nor Saudi Arabia have extradition treaties with Norway.
June 11: Solskjaer’s long-time agent, Jim Solbakken, denies engineering Sarr’s moves to Russia and Saudi Arabia. The website Josimar publishes messages between him and the player casting doubt on this.
June 26: Sarr is proven to have fathered the child allegedly conceived by rape in 2014.
September 30: The rearranged appeal hearing into the May 2017 rape claim, scheduled for the following day, is postponed until Sarr’s return to Norway.
October 4: Sarr’s appeal against his compensation payment is thrown out over his failure to attend the October 1 hearing.
2020
January 14: Damac FC announce they have terminated Sarr’s contract.
February 4: A court judgment into the decision to throw out Sarr’s appeal reveals he has been charged with another rape. Nettavisen subsequently reports the charge relates to the November 2018 accusation.
