Juventus plan to sell strikers
July 30, 2013

Juventus are looking to trim their top-heavy squad over the next few weeks with the club’s general manager Beppe Marotta claiming they have too many forwards.

The Bianconeri have added Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente to their front line this summer, yet none of the four strikers who were rotated on a regular basis by coach Antonio Conte last season have left the club.

Alessandro Matri, Fabio Quagliarella, Mirko Vucinic and Sebastiano Giovinco are all swelling the ranks in the Juve attack, but Marotta says his club will not go into the season with all six, indirectly sending out an invitation to the likes of Norwich City, Liverpool and Everton to present their offers.

“Our attack is overflowing because it’s too much to have six strikers of such quality,” he told Sky Italia. “We want to reduce it to five, maybe including one youngster, and we hope to find a positive solution for us.

“We’re analysing the offers, but what the players want is far more important than what we want as a club.”

The Canaries have been linked with Quagliarella, who netted nine times last season, while the two Merseyside clubs could go head to head for Matri’s services. Vucinic, Juve’s joint-top scorer last term with 11 goals, has said he would only leave Juve for AC Milan. Giovinco is less likely to be offloaded, given his versatility.

Once one or two strikers have been sold, there will be no further departures from Juve this summer with Mauricio Isla now also happy to stay, according to Marotta.

“Isla is our player and we assessed how we could possibly replace him, but we were unsuccessful and he expressed his willingness to stay, so that chapter is closed,” he said.

The sale of Arturo Vidal was never on the agenda, meanwhile. “We refused offers from top European clubs for him,” revealed Marotta.

Conte impressed by Carlos Tevez

Juventus coach Antonio Conte has labelled Carlos Tevez a "great professional" after being impressed by the striker’s start to life in Turin.

Tevez’s attitude was questioned during his time at Manchester United and Manchester City, with former team-mate Rio Ferdinand once claiming the Argentina international took it easy in training.

But Conte had nothing but praise for the work ethic of his new recruit when asked about Tevez in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He’s extraordinary,” Conte said. “He’s a great professional, a splendid person and always willing. He’s working exceptionally well.”

Tevez will lead Juve’s assault on a third successive Serie A title alongside fellow new signing Fernando Llorente, who also received Conte’s compliments on the eve of their first serious test of pre-season - a friendly against Everton in San Francisco.

"He’s a model athlete," Conte said of Llorente. "He has the right mentality and it’s a pleasure to see him training. "I’ve been impressed by all the new signings, but I’m also expecting a lot from our historic group too. It’s always a risk that you feel satisfied, but all we’ve got to think about is winning games.

"Nobody has an excuse, and I’ve got to be good at sending the right messages to my team like two years ago when we opened this cycle."

Juve go into the season, which for them starts with an away game at Sampdoria on the weekend of August 24, as overwhelming favourites for a third straight Scudetto and Conte feels his side are ready for the challenge.

With the arrivals of Tevez, Llorente and Angelo Ogbonna, together with "the explosion of [Paul] Pogba", he believes he has an even stronger team than a year ago.

"We tried to understand how we could improve our team and I think we’ve done it," Conte said. "We needed to increase the competition for places and we’ve achieved our goal. Compared to Europe’s big clubs, we’re still catching up and I hope we can catch them.

"Nevertheless, when I arrived at Juve, the plan was to challenge for the title in our third year so we’re a bit ahead."

MATIAS SILVESTRE is practically a Milan player
after an agreement between Inter and il
Diavolo has been reached. Adriano Galliani suggested last evening that Milan
abandoned the Matias Silvestre option but the two
sides returned to the negotiating table on Tuesday
afternoon and found an agreement: Silvestre, 28-
years-old, is a new Milan player.

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio is keen to remain with the Serie A club despite interest from Europe's top teams.

Marchisio, who was born in Turin, has spent almost his entire career at Juventus after progressing through the ranks at his hometown club.

The 27-year-old player has been linked with Premier League champion Manchester United and big-spending Monaco, and he says "of course it makes me happy to see my name put together with big European clubs" but adds "my dream is to end my career at Juventus."

Marchisio swiftly established himself as a Juventus regular and a firm fans' favourite on his return from a season-long loan spell at Empoli in 2008.

The Italy international is a key member of the Juventus team which has won two successive league titles.

STEPHAN EL SHAARAWY has claimed he was
very much aware of his decline in 2013 and has
committed to Milan. Milan will hope to challenge for the Scudetto next
season and a lot will depend on the partnership
between Mario Balotelli and Stephan El Shaarawy
who are also expected to be close on the pitch (like
off-the pitch) due to the change of formation. El Shaarawy played most of the games last season
on the left wing but is set to take the role of the
second striker in the new-old 4-3-1-2. Stephan,
who admits that he has learned a few things from
last season, hopes to do well next term.

There was no guarantee Conte would be a success at Juventus -- despite impressing in Serie B with Bari and Siena, Conte had a difficult experience during a short-lived spell with Atalanta in Serie A.

"This club, dear lads, is coming off two consecutive seventh-place finishes," Conte announced on his first day at Juventus in 2011. "It's crazy, shocking. I am not here for this, so it's time to stop being ----."

Thanks to Conte, the transformation occurred almost overnight. The former Juve captain has performed magnificently in his two seasons with the Old Lady, winning back-to-back titles, including the first unbeaten campaign, a truly historic achievement. Last season was less assured, partly because Juventus were competing in Europe, too -- but an enlarged squad meant Conte successfully juggled the two competitions as Juve retained their title.

Initially boasting that he'd play an attack-minded 4-2-4 system, Conte eventually switched to 4-3-3 and then, later, a regular 3-5-2 formation having initially only used it to mirror certain opponents. In both his starting selections and his use of the bench, Conte has emerged as an excellent tactician, reacting cleverly and instantly to opponents' moves.

"I was expecting a good coach but not that good," said Andrea Pirlo, who joined Juventus at the same time as Conte. "I thought he was a coach with a lot of grit and charisma; instead, I discovered that tactically and technically he has a lot to teach many of his colleagues … he makes us play matches with 11 against zero, urging us to repeat the same moves for 45 minutes until we get it right. That's why we win 11 against 11."

However, Conte is also famed for his fiery motivational team talks, including a 12-minute speech toward the end of Juventus' unbeaten campaign. "People are flooding us with praise right now, but that sends shivers through me," he begun. "Why? Because I have fear, I have fear, I have fear that someone here will start to relax."

With two league titles from two seasons, Conte's next step is conquering Europe. Schooled by a rampant Bayern side last season, there's no doubt that Juventus will learn their lessons and return stronger in 2013-14.

Juventus could sell right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner, 29, to Arsenal as they look to raise funds for Ajax midfielder Christian Eriksen, 21, who has been a target for Liverpool and Tottenham.
