Claudio Marchisio out for a month

Juventus midfielder Claudio Marchisio has been sidelined for a month after scans showed he suffered ligament damage during his side’s 4-0 Supercoppa Italia win over Lazio on Sunday.

Marchisio, 27, suffered the injury after 21 minutes in a challenge with defender Stefan Radu, and tests revealed that he had suffered a tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

A statement on the official Juventus website said the Italy international would miss the Serie A games against Sampdoria, Lazio and Inter Milan, and he is also expected to sit out the opening group stage game in the Champions League.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli will be without him for the World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Czech Republic.

Serie A, Ligi ya ubabani, inarudi rasmi Leo

A Juventus side strengthened by the signing of Argentina forward Carlos Tevez begin their bid for a third successive league title when the Italian Serie A gets under way on Saturday.

Antonio Conte's side eased to the championship last season, finishing nine points ahead of nearest challengers Napoli.

They begin 2013-14 at Sampdoria and sent a warning to their rivals last weekend with a dominant 4-0 win against Lazio in the Super Cup.
Tevez, a summer signing from Manchester City, made his debut in that game, scoring Juventus's fourth goal.

Conte also increased his attacking options over the summer with the signing of Spain forward Fernando Llorente from Athletic Bilbao, while keeping together the core of the side that has dominated Italian football for the past two years.

Last season's runners-up Napoli now have former Chelsea boss Rafael Benitez in charge.
They begin against Bologna on Sunday without the firepower of Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani, who joined Paris St-Germain in the summer.

But Benitez appears to have invested wisely, bringing in striker Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid, while goalkeeper Pepe Reina has joined from Liverpool.

AC Milan, champions in 2011, will also have their eye on a title challenge. However, they are without 10 players for Saturday's opener against Hellas Verona - including midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Nigel De Jong.

In other games, Inter Milan host Genoa on Sunday while Fiorentina - strengthened by the signing of Germany striker Mario Gomez from Bayern Munich - face Catania on Monday.

Conte: Juventus is surely the favorite

Ahead of the club's opening game with Sampdoria, the Italian boss insists its back-to-back Scudetto wins make it the team to beat this season but has issued a warning to his side

Antonio Conte believes Juventus is favorite to win Serie A again this season but, with clubs strengthening elsewhere, it will not be a formality.

Conte's side secured its second consecutive title last term, and the close-season arrivals of Angelo Ogbonna, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez have reinforced belief at Juventus Stadium that a hat trick is possible. "Juventus are surely the favorite team of this year's championship,"

Conte told reporters. "It was the same last year because we had won the Scudetto the year before. Last season we proved on the pitch that we were the strongest team of the championship. "This year we are the favorites again because of our recent victories, but I have to say that the favorites don't always win."

Other sides in Serie A have also bolstered their squads with Napoli and Fiorentina bringing in some marquee signings of their own such as Gonzalo Higuain and Mario Gomez, respectively. And Conte appreciates the increased difficulty of winning the Italian top flight this season.
He added: "I believe this year is going to be very tough because many teams will be competing for first place. Many teams have strengthened their squad spending much more money compared to Juventus."

The Bianconeri have been given a difficult opener against Sampdoria, who took all six points off Conte's side in the league last season. The former midfielder is anticipating another tough match when they meet on Saturday, but is backing his players to rise to the challenge, though, they will be without Claudio Marchisio who has a knee injury.

"Last year we were defeated in both matches against Sampdoria, therefore I hope that we'll have the chance to win for the first time tomorrow," he added. "We'll be playing against a great team made of young players and trained by an excellent coach, Delio Rossi, whom I consider a master.

"The match is going to be tough from the tactical point of view. We'll surely be finding difficulties, but we're working on them. Of course we want to start in the best possible way. "We're facing a team that will be playing with great enthusiasm because the stadium will surely be full tomorrow. I trust my guys and their willingness to hold the first position of the table."

Chiellini impressed by 'world-class' Tevez

The Juventus defender has lavished praise on his new teammate after the striker scored on his Serie A debut, singling out the Argentine's exceptional work rate.

Giorgio Chiellini hailed the quality of Carlos Tevez after the forward's strike led Juventus to a 1-0 win over Sampdoria. The Argentine found the net just before the hour mark on his Serie A debut to give the Bianconeri the three points at Stadio Luigi Ferraris and the perfect start to their league title defense.

Chiellini, speaking to journalists after the game, was eager to praise the club's new acqusition and revealed he was especially delighted with the 29-year-old's selfless attitude. "Tevez is an absolutely world-class player," Chiellini said. "But what surprised me more than anything is the way he sacrifices himself to help the team. "He works like a mule! I am happy for him as he is starting to reap the rewards of all his hard work this summer."

Juventus began the season with a comfortable 4-0 win over Lazio in the Supercoppa Italiana before defeating the Blucerchiati, but Chiellini believes there is far more to come from the side. "As a team we have ample room for improvement, as our legs are still not 100 percent," Chiellini said. "Sampdoria were a difficult side to face who closed up well, so it’s good that we allowed them little or nothing in attack."

Conte: Pogba can be world's best

Juventus manager Antonio Conte hailed Paul Pogba as a future great after the midfielder helped the Turin giants claim a 1-0 win over Sampdoria.

Juventus began their quest for three-straight Serie A titles in the perfect fashion as new recruit Carlos Tevez struck in the second-half to score the only goal of the game.

The win was especially sweet as Sampdoria claimed a perfect record against Juventus in the league last season.

However, it was the performance of young France international Pogba that caught the eye of Conte, the 44-year-old Italian believing his charge had the potential to become the “best in the world”.

"Pogba is a modern player, as he is strong, fast and has stamina," Conte told reporters after the match.

"He’s also humble, so listens to the advice given by me and by his team-mates. We started working on him a year ago and his progress has been incredible.

"I saw his interviews in which he said he wanted to become the best in the world. I am happy with that, because in my view he can be the best.”

However, Pogba had only praise for his team-mates and the club’s mentality for helping develop as a player.

"I feel like I have improved a lot especially playing with the likes of [Andrea] Pirlo, Arturo [Vidal], [Giorgio] Chiellini and now Tevez,” Pogba said.

"We are strong mentally. We are Juve and we always want to win.”

Meanwhile, goal-scorer Carlos Tevez said to claim victory in his Serie A debut was the ingredients of a ‘perfect’ night.

"I'm really happy here but it's not easy to slot into a new playing system, it takes time,” he said. “Tonight was perfect though: a goal and a win.

"I'm pleased because it was no easy feat coming here and doing that at such a difficult ground.”

Conte said Tevez offered Juventus much more than an outlet for goals and predicted that the Argentine, along with his fellow new recruits, will quickly adapt to the Juventus way.

"A lot has been said about him but he's certainly not afraid of putting in the hard work," the Italian commented shortly after.

"I'm not happy with a striker who's static. Tevez not only offers us quality up front but he helps out defensively too.

"Tevez has scored twice already but he's also made a huge contribution to the team – that's something all my players have always done.

"The more time passes, the more comfortable Carlos, Fernando [Llorente] and Angelo [Ogbonna] will be. They're putting a lot of effort and it's not easy, but these are top players we're talking about."

Real relishing Juve clashes

Real Madrid Director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueno says he is content with the club’s Champions League draw, but concedes Juventus will be a “difficult” proposition.

Madrid were pitted alongside Juve, Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen in Group B in Thursday’s draw for the group stages of Europe’s elite competition.

And Butragueno said: “It could have been better, could have been worse. There will be two passionate games against Juventus, a historical rival for us. We know it will be difficult, they are a great club, with great fans, and are very difficult to play under [coach Antonio] Conte, they are a very cohesive side.”

The former Madrid striker said he had spoken before the draw with Juventus’ party, and been told of how much progress the Serie A champions had made in recent years.

“As an organisation, as a club, they are a great institution, very serious,” Butragueno said. “During the meal, we chatted a while with them. They are happy with how their club has been developing these three years. They have put together an excellent team.”

Butragueno said he knew how difficult a challenge Galatasaray would be from Los Blancos’ 5-3 aggregate win in last season’s quarter-finals, while Copenhagen would also pose a challenge.

“We know Galatasaray from last year and know how difficult it is there with their fans,” he said “We went there with a good result, but in the second half we suffered a lot. We know how their fans support them, but we hope we are capable of. Copenhagen may seem an unknown quantity, but we will be a dangerous opponent.”

Getting currently sidelined players such as Xabi Alonso back fit would be a help for Madrid going forward, Butragueno said.

“We hope to get our injured players back as soon as possible so Ancelotti can call on them,” he said. “I believe the group will be very balanced, you cannot be too confident in Europe.”

Meanwhile, Juventus’ general director Beppe Marotta believes his side must pay particular attention to Galatasaray if they are to reach the last 16 of the Champions League for the second year running.

“It’s going to depend a lot on the fixture list and how we arrive at each game, but I think it’s going to be a duel between us and Galatasaray, although we’ll give Real Madrid a game too,” Marotta told Sky Italia.

“Of course with [Real coach Carlo] Ancelotti, it’s harder for us but if we are here it’s because we have the strength to compete.”
