LUSAKA, Zambia, Wednesday, April 3, 2024 - This morning, Senior management staff of the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) led by General Manager Mr. DEAN YANG, accompanied by Business Development Department Manager Mr. PHILIP SUN, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Transport and Logistics Hon. MUSEBA FRANK TAYALI, MP at the Ministry Headquarters.

The CCECC delegation expressed delight for having been accorded an audience by the Minister and further discussed pertinent issues to do with the revitalisation of the Tazara Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA).

On September 5, 1967, the Governments of China, Tanzania and Zambia signed an agreement in Beijing on building the Tazara Railway. When many countries and international organizations all declined to help, China provided an interest-free loan of 988 million yuan with no conditions attached.

This is how far the relationships between China and Zambia date back, and the two countries have continued, through various engagements, maintained their strong cooperation to-date.

Terminal hizi zinaenda kurudi na kupiga kazi kama zamani 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇 TAZARA has modern cargo terminus, complete with gantry cranes and other handling facilities at New Kapiri Mposhi, Kasama, Makambako and Dar es Salaam stations.

These facilities provide a quick and efficient means for exporters and importers from different regions of Africa to load and offload cargo onto and from TAZARA wagons. New Kapiri Mposhi handles cargo to and from the Southern and Central African regions, whilst Kasama covers the Great Lakes region. Similarly, Mbeya and Makambako cater for cargo from Malawi and some parts of the Great Lakes.

With such spread of the TAZARA terminus, cargo is easily relayed from region to region. In addition, there is a privately owned trans-shipment facility at Kidatu that handles the transfer of cargo from the wider gauge (1,067mm) wagons of TAZARA onto the narrower gauge (1,000mm) wagons of the Tanzania Railways Limited (TRL) facilitating inter-connectivity amongst the regions of Southern, Central and East Africa

ZAMBIA, CHINA DISCUSS CONCESSION OF TAZARA

By Wilson Mulinda

Zambia and Tanzania want TAZARA to undergo full concession as a unit.

Transport and Logistics Minister FRANK TAYALI says the two Governments want the concessionaire to spell out in clear terms the steps they will take in the revival process.

Mr. TAYALI says the revitalization will include areas such as track, maintenance and improvement, safety issues and the signaling system.

The Minister said this during a luncheon hosted by the Chinese Charge d’ Affaires of the People's Republic of China to Zambia WANG SHENG at the Chinese Ambassador's Residence.

Meanwhile, Mr. WANG said China attaches great importance to the project as it is a critical investment and show of friendship among the three countries.

MANBO YANAZIDI KUWA MOTO TAZARA 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇♨️♨️♨️♨️♨️♨️We have already started negotiations and we believe that we will reach a consensus soon. In February this year, CCECC submitted a proposal for the upgrading of Tazara to standard gauge and reached a consensus to operate the line at a cost of $1 billion,” he said.

According to him, Tazara has faced operational difficulties from the start and was kept running by continued assistance from China, several European countries, and the United States. Freight traffic peaked at 1.2 million tonnes in 1986, but began to decline in the 1990s as the end of apartheid in South Africa and the independence of Namibia opened alternative transport routes for Zambian copper.

China -Tanzania cooperation has long been leading when it comes to China-Africa cooperation, with China achieving fruitful results from the investment in Tanzania as it has always been a participant, enabler and beneficiary of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

ZAMBIA, China and Tanzania will later this month sign a comprehensive memorandum of understanding (MoU) to revamp TAZARA railway infrastructure to make it viable and operate under best international standards.

Without giving more details, President Hichilema disclosed that the three countries have agreed on various parameters to ensure the railway facility that links Zambia to the seaport of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is rehabilitated to operate at full capacity.

“Sorry to be presumptive but this is how things will be done, and we all need to work together…our three countries have agreed to revamp and revitalise TAZARA railway facility; it may gobble lots of money but is a project worth reviving,” he said during the launch of Lusaka International Arbitration Centre yesterday
