Kenya abandons plan to electrify its SGR citing high costs and irregular power supply

stopped twice between Lebu and Adama, including once for 5 minutes because we hit a goat at a road crossing. (the management company then sends some of its local staff to pay compensations)


. We arrived in Adama at 9:15 and stopped for about 40 min for an unknown reason


However the shepherd didn't want to let the train go until he gets compensated (for 70 goats, since some were pregnant and some cubs need their dead mother...). More federal and local police came, about 20 in total. The train left after 7 (!) hours of negotiations which, according the the Chinese boss in the train, included some calls to the Ethiopian minister of transport and the head of the federal police in Addis, at dusk (I suspect the shepherd let it go because they had to go home for diner, otherwise they would have stayed!). The boss told me "they do it on purpose to get money. They ask an unreasonable price. The other day we killed 12 camels and they asked for a million birr".




The train was so late than we stopped in Dire Dawa for the night.




After 1h40 of normal ride the train got stuck for 30min in the desert because there was no electricity.




Then we were running at 110 km/h according to the GPS. We stopped again because of power failure at 13:15 and power came back 1h later. Apparently they once got stuck for 10h..

Huwezi ukakokotoa consumption ya umeme linearly, kuna parameters za ku-consider kama vifaa vya kuhifadhi umeme ktk train zenyewe kama vile capacitors, flywheel an accumulators bila kusahau efficiency yake.

Ukiweka hayo pembeni, ku-estimate matumizi ni kati ya 3 - 4 kWhr/km/100 tonne.

Tatizo la kenya hata si umeme, tatizo ni unreliable electric grid... Unakuta transfoner ama sub station inaharibika rahisi .... Reli ya Ethiopia imekwama njiani for 7 hours ikingoja stima zirudi, mind you ethiopia has more power than EAC combined

Ni dhahili ukiona mapungufu ya Ethiopia utagundua kuwa kuna vitu hawakuvitilia maanani ndo maana changamoto ni nyingi! Kwanza suala la train kugonga mifugo na kusimama ili wajadili na wenye mifugo nalo linatia ikakasi!

Tatizo lenyu hapa ni inferiority complex. Mawazo ya electrification ya hiyo Railway ilianza kitambo sana. Focus ya Kenya ni movement of goods wala si movement of people. Ninyi fanyeni yenu, wacha sisi tufanye yetu. Ikiwa tutabadilisha, tutabadilisha tu. Nikiweza ku paraphrase alichosema balozi wa US kule Somalia miaka ya 80'. "Tanzanians (on JF) think that they are are the centre of world affairs when they barely exist at its periphery."
Na kuhusu Kenya waMarekani hao hao wamewahi kusema nini? Unakumbuka? Unatutukania tusi la Mzungu anayetukana watu weusi wote kila mara bila kujali huyu wa nchi hii na huyu wa nchi nyingine. Wao hujumuisha tu kama majuzi. Hatuchekani! Sisi tuongee ya kwetu hapa basi.

wewe ndo pambaf kabisa. hujui ya kuwa any challenges that rise in Ethiopian SGR we take it as ours if were not taken care during the planning stage.
