Today, the 28th October 2018, Kenya Airways flight,KQ 002, will be making a maiden trip from the iconic Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), at 22:45 for a 14-hour direct trip flight landing at the John F. Kennedy International Airport at 06.45 on Monday morning, 29th October 2018.

This inaugural flight comes after several years of intense negotiations and efforts that have seen significant re-engineering of the JKIA – pushing it to an international status comparable to any top aviation hub in the world. Coming in 2018, the inaugural flight is a first mover in the pursuit of Africa’s integration and fusion with the global market.

Kenya Airways will be connecting 10 passenger and cargo source countries from Africa directly to the western hemisphere from JFK. Other than reaffirm the status of JKIA as hub, this flight, which will fly daily both ways, makes Kenya a firm bridge between Africa and the rest of the World.

Kenya Airways will be joining four other sub-Saharan Africa countries that fly directly to the US, namely South Africa, Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Ghana and Nigeria.

It is cost effective in terms of time and cost; but it offers a connectivity to the western hemisphere that will encourage larger volumes of goods, and number of people – of configurations – students, tourists, traders, investors to engage with one another from across the Atlantic.

Hii flight ime take off? Nilikuwa naifuatilia tangu juzi nikasikia kuna migogoro gani sijui ya last minute ilikuwa bado kuwa cleared off.

I would really like to fly New York - Nairobi and connect to Dar from there. Skip Europe alogether. Although some people will lament about the Zurich duty free chocolates and watches.

I was looking at the fare, it looked dramatically less than going through Zurich, Istanbul or Amsterdam. Less mileage, less fuel, less costs and less fare I would hazard to guess.

I know there are little senseless squabbles amongst East Africans, overgrown sibling rivarly if anything. I outgrew that many years ago. This flight will provide a very convenient way to go to Tanzania.

I have read concerns about this being more of a political statement than an economically viable route, especially considering the daily frequency.

Is the demand available for a daily flight?

Yes, its a daily time schedule is, departure at 22:45 for a 14-hour direct trip flight landing at the John F. Kennedy International Airport at 06.45. Over 7,000 have booked Kenya Airways direct flights to New York.

Hayawi hayawi huwa.

It’s all systems go for the maiden Kenya Airways flight that will fly direct to the United States beginning Sunday evening in a historic event to be overseen by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The Boeing 787 dreamliner with a capacity of 234 passengers is scheduled to depart Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 10.25 pm on Sunday and touch down at the JF Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday at around 1.30 pm East African Time (EAT). The 15-hour flight will cut the long hours passengers have been spending connecting through different continents.

The inaugural direct flights will see Kenya become the first East African country and the eighth in Africa to operate direct flights to the US.
In Africa, only South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, Ghana and Morocco make direct flights to US.

The maiden flight comes barely two days after the High Court barred aviation workers who had vowed to go on a strike if the airline did not conclude their Collective Bargaining Agreement before Sunday.

On Friday, Justice Byram Ongaya blocked the strike during the inaugural day pending hearing of their case.

Last week, Statehouse Spokesperson Kanze Dena, said the direct flights are aimed at opening the country to more investors, tourists and strengthening the partnership with Kenya and the East African Community. “The President will be excited to join Kenyans at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to launch the first direct flight from Africa to New York,” said Kanze Dena in a press briefing at State Lodge, Kakamega.

The highly publicised trip will see 468 passengers boarding the plane among them senior officials led by Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma, Kenya Airways chief executive Sebastian Mikosz and chairman Michael Joseph.

After the inauguration, Kenya Airways will be deploying a Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet with a capacity of 234 seats for their daily flight to New York city.

Naamini tuna cha kujifunza kama Taifa!

Thanks. I was reading somewhere criticism of the viability of a daily flight.

Do you think the demand will be sustained? I surely hope so, because that means I can be in Nairobi without transiting in Europe.

I would be disappointed to see that the skepticism regarding lack of sustained demand for a daily flight are founded.

The fact that this flight will reduce time and cost may mean the entire US/East Africa market will switch to this flight, which could mean it is possible for sustained demand to be available.

How many passengers does this flight typically seat?

Ukishafiaka Kenya umefika East Afriaka. Ndio maana palikua na East Afrika Air way maiaka hiyo . Waasisi waliona Mbali.

Kwani ilikuwa imesimamisha safari? Mbona niliiona juzi kati Kenya airways nikiwa Kampala?
