Kenya classifies Namanga border town with Tanzania as COVID-19 high-risk area

The Kenyan government on Wednesday classified Namanga, the border town with Tanzania, as a COVID-19 high-risk area following a surge in numbers of cases of the virus at border points.

Kenya has recently taken to testing foreign truck drivers who wish to enter the country from Tanzania following a rise in the number of truck drivers who are testing positive for the virus.

The designation came as the Kenyan Ministry of Health announced that 25 foreign truck drivers from Tanzania had tested positive for COVID-19. 23 of the truck drivers were Tanzanian while the other two were Ugandan and Rwandan.

This means that about 30 Tanzanian truck drivers so far have tested positive for COVID-19, according to figures from the ministry.

“This (Namanga) is an area that we have now classified as a high-risk based on COVID-19 positive cases detected at border crossing points,” Kenya’s Health Chief Administrative Secretary Rashid Aman said.

According to the ministry the truck drivers were denied entry and referred back to Tanzania.

“We do this testing on the other side but those truck drivers remain on the Tanzanian side of the border on Tanzanian soil,” Aman added.

In response to this, the ministry said it will deploy a fully-equipped mobile laboratory to the border town of Namanga in the south to test foreign truck drivers coming in from Tanzania as part of measures to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This facility will be key in surveillance and monitoring of the virus in this region,” Aman said.

The country is to receive two laboratories as part of an EAC programme to improve disease surveillance and monitoring within member states.

Aman said that the laboratory was being deployed to Namanga out of the Kenyan government’s interest in protecting its people despite whatever was going on in Tanzania.

The ministry’s Director-General Dr. Patrick Amoth added that the deployment was also to prevent any snarl up at the border and allow seamless movement of cargo.

Tanzania’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has come under global scrutiny with the government failing to release any new data on the pandemic. The last day Tanzania released any data on the virus was on April 29.

Tanzanian authorities have downplayed the extent of the pandemic while President John Magufuli accused local health officials of exaggerating the health crisis.

Magufuli himself has been criticised for not ordering the closure of churches and mosques and asking people to pray for the disease to go away. He had also dismissed COVID-19 testing kits as faulty after claiming that they returned positive results on samples taken from a goat and a pawpaw.

The US embassy in Tanzania on Wednesday warned of a risk in “exponential growth” of COVID-19 cases and advised Americans living in Tanzania to stay at home and limit interactions with people other than those they live with.

We will not close but we will not allow in any Tanzanian driver who tests positive for covid19. We test and refer them back to your ministry of health which will not tell you that they tested positive.

No we want you to close the border completely and see if you will survive even for one week. Tanzania is controlling Economies of East African countries and beyond. Without Tanzania, there is no Kenya and other east African countries.

Kenya needs Uganda more than Tanzania. Tanzania needs Kenya more as a market for it's raw products or else your farmers will die poor.

Unazungumza kuhusu boda ambayo kuna wakati ilifungwa kwa miaka saba? Alafu kwa miaka saba hiyo uchumi wa Kenya ulikuwa kwa kasi na wa Tz ukafifia na tukawapiga gap ambalo hadi sasa hivi hamjaweza kurecover. Hivi unajua Uganda kwa sasa ndio wanauza bidhaa nyingi Kenya zaidi ya Tz? Unajua top export ya Kenya Tz ni nini? Madawa, hebu tafakari hayo na uwe serious kwenye masuala kama haya. Tatizo kwa sasa ni kwamba maambukizi ya Corona yamezidi kutoka upande wa pili wa boda, kama tu kule kwa boda ya Tz na Zambia. Mbona msiishinikize serikali yenu ifanye jambo kuhusu hilo ili hali irudi kama kawaida? Kuna watz wengi sana na wakenya pia ambao wanapata hasara kubwa kisa shughuli za kawaida za kibiashara zimevurugwa kwenye boda.

80% of our agricultural produces goes to SADC markets, while 80% of your food is from Tanzania, even Uganda depends on Tanzania for rice, Sunflowers, legumes and fruits. Without Tanzania, there is no a single country can survive in this region.

Tanzania na Kenya, zote zinanua zaidi ya 95% ya dawa kutoka India, kuna aina 5 tu za dawa ambazo sio muhimu ambazo hutoka Kenya( anti- pains & Antifungal & Flagyl), zote hizi pia kuna zinazotoka India, Egypt na Europe, kwahiyo sio muhimu kwetu.

Kenya inategemea chakula na Malighafi kwa ajili ya viwanda vyake toka Tanzania, hizi bidhaa zetu tukiamua kuzizuia zisije huko, lazima uchumi wenu utayumba sana.

Mipaka ilipofingwa miaka ya 70s, Kenya ilitegemea sana nchi za Magharibi kupata chakula, raw materials na markets kwa ajili ya Bidhaa zake, Kenya haikua ikitegemea soko la nchi za kusini.

Sasa hivi nchi zote za Magharibi hazina tena sababu za kuibeba Kenya kwa sababu vita baridi imeisha, Kenya inalazimika kujitafutia Chakula, raw materials na masoko yake, ndio sababu sasa hivi Kenya inategemea sana Tanzania na Uganda kwa ajili ya chakula, na Soko la EA, na nchi za SADC, bila hizi nchi mbili, Kenya haina uwezo wa kusurvive.

Biashara hizo zinaingiza takriban shilingi ngapi kwenye uchumi wa Tz? Maanake unasifia utadhani mnagawa bidhaa bure. Alafu mbona uchumi wenu haupo juu zaidi ya nchi zote zingine SADC na EAC pia kama nyinyi ndio mnategemewa? Bila viwanda vya maana utabaki tu kubweka bweka bure. Kwa mfano Kenya tunawauzia Tz bidhaa ambazo kwa ujumla ni za thamani ya juu zaidi ya tunazonunua kutoka Tz, kwasababu ya viwanda. Madawa, sabuni na bidhaa zingine kutoka kwa viwanda ndio top products kutoka Kenya. Licha ya hayo hutasikia wakenya wakijimwambafy kwamba wanawatibu na kuwang'arisha kwasababu tunaelewa vyema kwamba ni BIASHARA sio misaada. Acha ushamba jombaa.
 
Kama kawaida yenu ya kuzungumza mambo usiyoyajua, Kuanzia 2014 hadi 2018 Tanzania ndio iliyokua inauza zaidi Kenya kuliko Kenya inavyouza Kwa Tanzania, ni mwaka Jana pekee ndio Kenya imeuza zaidi kwa Tanzania, hii ni kwasababu Tanzania ilipeleka chakula kingi Msumbiji, Malawi na Zimbabwe zilizopigwa na kimbunga.

Tanzania ni namba 3 katika nchi zenye uchumi mkubwa zaidi SADC kati ya nchi 16. Tanzania " balance of trade in SADC is always Positive ". Bidhaa zote muhimu tunazohitaji tunazipata toka katika nchi za SADC, Kenya hamzalishi bidhaa zozote muhimu zaidi ya Sabuni, Maziwa, Siagi na Sigara, hizi sio bidhaa muhimu kwetu.
