Kenya army warns of al-Shabab donkeys in Somalia

Kenya's military spokesman has said large groups of donkeys in Somalia will be considered "al-Shabab activity" following reports the militants are using the animals to transport weapons.
Maj Emmanuel Chirchir used Twitter to warn Kenyans not to sell their donkeys to the Islamist group.
Kenya sent troops into Somalia to establish a buffer zone, after accusing al-Shabab of cross-border kidnappings.
Al-Shabab, which controls southern Somalia, denies the allegations.
It has accused Kenya of planning a full-scale invasion of Somalia.
On Tuesday, Maj Chirchir used official Twitter account to warn that al-Shabab camps near 10 Somali towns would soon be attacked and urged residents to leave.

However, no such attacks have yet occurred.
He has also posted video which he says shows a small al-Shabab boat being sunk, killing 18 militants and warned aircraft not to land in the Islamist-held town of Baidoa, following reports that al-Shabab had been flying in new supplies of weapons.
In his latest series of tweets, the Kenyan military spokesman said that the price of donkeys had risen from $150 (£100) to $200 following the increased al-Shabab demand for the animals.
"Any large concentration and movement of loaded donkeys will be considered as al-Shabab activity," he wrote, suggesting they would be targeted by Kenyan firepower.
"Selling Donkeys to al-Shabab will undermine our efforts in Somalia," he continued.
BBC East Africa correspondent Will Ross says it is not clear whether al-Shabab are using donkeys because the muddy roads are impassable for vehicles or to avoid detection from aircraft.
Maj Chirchir also said that any "unauthorised flying over the region" would be considered a threat.
"All aircrafts are hereby warned not to land in BAIDOA. Anyone violating this will be doing so at their peril," he wrote.

Last weekend, the Kenyan military was accused of bombing a refugee camp, killing five people, including three children.
Maj Chirchir denied the accusation and said a Kenya fighter jet had only hit al-Shabab positions in Jilib, killing 10 militia fighters.
People abducted from Kenya since September include a French woman suffering from cancer, who French authorities say has since died, a British woman taken from a coastal resort, whose husband was killed in the raid, and a Kenyan driver and two Spanish aid workers seized from the Dadaab refugee camp near the Kenya-Somalia border.
After two decades of civil conflict, Somalia is awash with guns, and analysts say any number of groups could have carried out the kidnappings - including pirate gangs.
Al-Shabab, which is linked to al-Qaeda, is locked in a battle with the weak UN-back interim government for control of the parts of the country which are currently outside its power, particularly the capital, Mogadisho.

I know you think the Social Media is to be used for hurling insults but this is another Kenyan first; the usage of Social media in battle to share information and it is being hailed by the whole world as such. This is why the donkey my friend is a target in this battle!

US Senator lauds Kenya operation in Somalia

<font color="#333333"><span style="font-family: Times New Roman">

A US senator has praised the Kenyan Government for its operation against Somalia militia Al-Shabaab.

Mark Kirk, a Republican representing President Barack Obama's home state of Illinois, told his Senate colleagues on Wednesday that the Obama administration and Nato should support Kenya's incursion.

"I thank the government of Kenya and its President Mwai Kibaki for the difficult decision he and his government have made with regard to Somalia," Senator Kirk declared in a speech on the Senate floor.

"The success of the Kenyan operation would mean a significant weakening of al-Shabaab's ability to plan and execute terrorist attacks and would greatly contribute to regional stability."

He has spoken out previously in favour of aggressive Kenyan action regarding Somalia.

Senator Kirk called earlier this year for US military aid to militias in the Jubaland area of Somalia that Kenya has wanted to establish as a buffer zone. That approach is opposed by US diplomats, however, whose negative views of the Jubaland initiative are detailed in secret cables published by WikiLeaks.

You are a relic of your 'Ujamaa' past yet to come to terms with the fact that this electronic infrastructure we use to trade insults is open to all and is not subject to the choking controls of an individual.

Bantugbro, 99.99% of Kenyans do not even know you exist and you are drowned out by the majority of Tanzanians that we have a flourishing relationship with.

Typical high school kids trolling...
Why do you want my advice/value/input now, is it too hot to handle?, may be you should have asked before you decided to invade another country...Unfortunately you just showed up in this forum during the course of the war, to seek sympathies maybe

So the woman who wrote the Aljazeera article also hates Kenya and will be dealt with insults as well?

Do you honestly believe that all Kenyans support this war and those who don't will be dealt with the same way?

Remember even in cyberspace your freedom has some limits...Please, read careful below:

HAHAHA You are a relic of your ujamaa past. You will not silence me by brandishing a ban threat you coward. You have been calling for attacks on Kenyans and have stated time and again that we will be killed in Somalia & everyone on this forum can see that. You are on the run now since you have been confronted and asked to account for your statements and you have a gag threat!! Laughable!!!

:focus:

You have been yelping that the Kenyan forces are inexperienced and will be slaughtered by al shabaab and that we should borrow a leaf from you and I ask you again, what is it of value that you have to offer from the experience of the war fought 33 years ago? TELL US!!!

Tell us of the battlefield manoeuvre or and systematic attacks that should be used in this battle since you claim to have the experience.............we are waiting....

You have proven that you have nothing to offer, you dont not have even an iota of the geopolitical standing and impact of this operation and you have no knowledge whatsoever of what goes on in the battle field!!!!!

Your criticism is driven by a deep seated hatred. I repeat, Bantugbro, 99.99% of Kenyans do not even know you exist and you are drowned out by the majority of Tanzanians that we have a flourishing relationship with. The steaming flow of gibberish spewing from your mind proves you are afraid and find it necessary to compete or undermine everything we do. We have nothing against you, we are not here to take anything from you, we are not after you and there exists no competition between us. We share a border and have much in common but we are two different worlds and are your friends but we will stand up for our own.

Haya Mekatilili nimekusoma. Good luck with your prosaic social media strategies (Kenya being the first!). To say that it is being "hailed by the whole world" is simply sheer overstatement, an uncalled for amplification. Which world are you alluding to?

Kenya summons Eritrean envoy over arming of Shabaab

Foreign-minister-Moses-Wetangula.jpgKenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula
NAIROBI (Reuters) - Kenya summoned the ambassador of Eritrea on Friday and threatened to take unspecified action because of reports that Eritrea had armed Somalia's al-Shabaab rebels.

Kenyan troops have been fighting al Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab militants in the south of Somalia after crossing the border last month in pursuit of fighters Kenya blames for a spate of kidnappings.

The Kenyan military threatened this week to launch air strikes against al-Shabaab arms caches in Somalia, in response to what it said were reports Eritrea had flown two consignments of weapons to the Shabaab stronghold of Baidoa.

Eritrea denies arming the fighters and says such allegations are stirred up by regional rivals to sully its reputation.

Kenya's Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula told a news conference on Friday he had summoned the Eritrean ambassador and "raised concerns about intelligence that we have and information available that there is a possibility that arms supplies are flowing from his country to al Shabaab".

"If that be the case, we have a series of options -- which I do not need to say here -- to deal with the situation," he said.

Wetangula said he had agreed to an Eritrean request that its foreign minister come to Kenya to discuss the issue. He did not say when the meeting would take place.

A U.N. report in late July said Eritrea was bankrolling al Shabaab and was also behind a plot to attack an African Union summit in Ethiopia. Eritrea called that report "ridiculous and absurd".

The U.N. has imposed an arms embargo on Eritrea, as well as a travel ban and asset freezes on political and military leaders it says are violating an arms embargo on Somalia.

Several East African countries consider al-Shabaab to be a regional security threat. Uganda and Burundi have large contingents fighting against al-Shabaab on behalf of Somalia's fragile Western-backed government as part of an African force.

Wetangula said Kenya had not invaded Somalia, but was defending it's territory and supporting the Somali government.

"Make no mistake, Kenya will do everything possible to make sure that ... all supplies to al Shabaab must be stopped,"
Wetangula said.

Kenya tweets of new threat in war against militants: donkeys

REPORTING FROM NAIROBI, KENYA -- Pity the donkeys of northern Kenya: The country's military announced Thursday that those sold to the wrong people would be bombed.

The Twitter feed of Kenyan military spokesman, Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir, who is rapidly becoming the public face of Kenya's incursion into Somalia, warned that his forces had identified a new threat in the war against Al Shabab militants: loaded donkeys.

In conventional wars (if they even exist any more), intelligence is concerned with mass movements of tanks and troops, but Kenya is watching out for mass movements of donkeys, which would be considered an enemy activity.

The reason, Chirchir explained in a flurry of messages late Thursday, was that "information reaching us confirms that Al Shabab has resorted to using donkeys to transport their weapons."

Another tweet said: "Currently Somalia is receiving heavy rainfall, making the roads impassable."

Another: "Any large concentration of loaded donkeys will be considered as Al Shabab activity"

He tweeted that selling donkeys to Al Shabab on the Somali-Kenyan border would undermine Kenya's battle against the insurgents, known as Operation Linda Nchi, or "protect the nation."

"In addition we are also reliably informed that the cost of donkeys has risen from $150 to $200 for a donkey," he added, advising Kenyans not to sell the animals to Al Shabab.

The major, who has rapidly built a following of more than 2,700 for his tweets, regularly posts news items and messages on the morale of Kenyan forces.

Several days ago, Chirchir warned people in 10 southern Somali towns that Kenyan planes were about to launch continuous bomb attacks and called on them to stay away from Al Shabab bases.

Thursday evening, he posted a YouTube video clip on his Twitter feed purporting to be of Kenya's navy blowing up a vessel and killing 18 Somali militants.

He has also warned on Twitter of planeloads of arms arriving in southern Somalia and declared that Kenya would track down and destroy them.

Kenya invaded Somalia last month to crush Al Shabab militants fighting Somalia's U.N.-backed transitional government, an operation triggered by alleged kidnappings of foreigners in Kenya by the Islamic movement.

MY OPINION: KENYA DEFENCE FORCES WAMEANZA KUCHANGANYIKIWA NA VITA YA KWANZA

Attempting to degrade the enemy's ability to transport arms and munitions into the battlefield is now "kuchanganyikiwa"? What do you think armies do in a war situation?

Its not a threat the ban will surely come if you continue to use derogatory lingo, seems you don't learn your lessons.

I asked you do you honestly believe that all Kenyans support this war?

I repeat you are a coward! On this forum you have been fantasising about the death of Kenyans and the attack of Kenyans by the Al Shabaab and everyone on this forum can attest to that even your fellow Tanzanians have called you out on your negativity and you think a gag threat will scare me?

Get back to the point at hand and answer the question or just zip it!

I expected you to come out more intelligently but sadly you are posting more insults and insinuations more than even those who you are accussing of being deluded and backwards.I thought you would come up with something better than the old and tired ujamaa cliche...
Where did you get your 33 years calculations, seems your history is a bit rusty...
One last thing how long did it take you to break down the Mashifta rebellion despite it being an internal war?You don't war as Rage puts it and be glad for that, wars bear an enormous cost.Your army has killed it's own citizens,we don't why, perhaps out of fear like muggers...Even the mighty USA's economy is steadidy declining after waging war with 'tiny' Taliban and Iraq.

Vipi wazee vita imekwisha? ... ..... tupo wa kumi na moja chacha.

I am not cowered by your gag threats. If you belittle my Country my people and the brave men and women who have put their lives on the line to protect us I will confront you about it! If you are unable to keep up a sane discusion and resort to threatening to silence me I will remind you of how insignificant you are and drown your vitriol with logic!

The mashifta war wasnt exactly a 'maji maji' rebelion so read a book about it since you dont have the faintest idea what went on.

We are happy that a majority of the Tanzanians on this website are not filled with hatred as the goons below. Sample the vitriolic comments that have been made about Kenya on this website regarding the Alshabaab invasion. It is one thing to have a pissing contest over the respective military prowess but it is another for some posters here to call for the killing of Kenyans despite the fact the spectacular xenophobic reaction is expected.

Al-shabab will be knocking on our doors soon.
PressTV - 'US drones fly from secret Kenya bases'

Wakenya hawawawezi Al Shabaab.

Don't worry yourself. While you might feel lambasted, please know ye that most of us support the war. Otherwise, kuna kitu kinaitwa utani wa jadi. You can not avoid that between Tanzanians and Kenyans. Safari hii imekula kwenu!

 Please, I am not worried by the insults, I am simply pointing out the facts here. The fact is there are xenophobic goons that are roaming this forum and we can tell a barb from a mile and those are not barbs, in typical Kenyan fashion I would say "C'est la vie" I got ganji to make.
