Kenya declares war on Al Shabaab!

While some here are busy cheerleading for the Shabab (from a safe distance), the people who actually have to live with and under them cannot wait to be rid of them and are very grateful indeed to Kenya for helping them;

Somali President criticised for anti-Kenya comments | World | Reuters

In the Somali town of Dhobley near the border with Kenya, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets Tuesday waving Kenyan and Somali flags and burning pictures of the president.

"We want Kenya and Somalia to fight al Shabaab in every corner. We do not have any other hope for life," Gedi Farah, an elder from the Dhobley area, told Reuters by phone.

"Kenya, do not believe the words of our weak, mad president. Please fight al Shabaab and go deep into Somalia. We want to return to our homes," he said.

Somali military officials and a spokesman for the pro-government Ras Kamboni militia urged the demonstrators to calm down, saying the president's remarks were not in line with the Somali government's position.

"The Somali government does not support al Shabaab. It is only the president and that will be solved," said Colonel Yasin Warfa, a government military official.

“I can tell you that every thing has beginning and end. So What I am saying to the people in both regions is to be patient or tolerate. Al shabab will be out for the coming days,” said the spokesman of the traditional elders.

The refugees, who are mainly from Somalia, also declared their support to Kenya’s military intervention in their home country in Somalia where Kenyan soldiers have pitched tent for the last three weeks in pursuit of the Al Shabaab militants........A witness at the camp told Capital News that the refugees were also carrying placards saying they “are happy with the military intervention in our country because it will enable us go back home.”[/QUOTE]

3 Al-Shabaab Fighters Killed by Landmine

Al-Shabaab Factions Disagree on Strategy Against TFG
By MOHAMED SHIIL 11/10/2011

At least three al-Shabaab fighters were killed and several others wounded in a roadside bomb blast in El-Bur district of Galgudud in the central regions of Somalia today, according to witnesses who spoke to Somalia Report. “It was a heavy explosion and you could hear it in El-bur and its surroundings areas. The dead and the injured were taken to the El-Bur general hospital,” said a resident who asked to be called Aden.

The car carrying al-Shabaab fighters drove over a landmine, which resulted in the explosion.

Reports indicate another wing of al-Shabaab in Galgudud was behind the attack due to a disagreement between al-Shabaab fighters in Galgudud region over the strategy to fight against the pro-government Ahlu Sunna Wal-Jama'a militia and Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) in the region.

This comes after al-Shabaab fighters threatened people in Galgudud on suspicion of having links with the TFG.

Al-Shabaab is fighting on several fronts against the TFG, African Union peacekeepers (known as AMISOM), Kenyan troops and pro-government militias in the southern regions of Somalia and is attempting to redirect the ongoing fighting into clan inflicted war mobilizing certain Somali clans to fight on their behalf.

Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, a senior al-Shabaab leader, recently called for the Ayr, a sub clan of Habargidir, to join the al-Shabaab fight while denouncing other Somali clans including Maheerteen, Abgaal and Marehan for neglecting what he described as “Jihad against crusaders and those diverted against Islam,” referring the AMISOM, Kenyan and TFG forces.

I also support the KDF invasion in somalia, but I'm highly disappointed by the arrogance of the Kenyans.

Sorry but, what arrogance? We have people here who are eagerly anticipating the deaths of Kenyans (soldiers) and who want to see attacks and destruction in our cities and also, due to envy/hatred, are wishing that we fail but when we reply we are the ones who are arrogant? TBH, I think it's quite clear that the outrageous and, quite frankly, hateful sentiments on this thread have not come from Kenyans!

I know for a fact that most Tanzanians do not think like some of the people on this thread because I have met and know quite a few Tanzanians and they are always very good guys.

Kshaka,

I cannot think of a more natural pair of allies in the region than Kenya and Tanzania.

Al Shabaab claim they have radar equipment to detect enemy aircraft

The claim by the radical group comes as row over alleged shipment of arms for Al Shabaab have been growing between Kenya and Eritrea

MOGADISHU (Xinhua)
-- The rebel militants of Al Shabaab in Somalia said they have obtained radar equipments and other military hardware to fight against Kenyan and Somali troops battling the group in the south of the war-torn country, a pro-Al Shabaab website reported on Thursday.

The claim by the radical group comes as row over alleged shipment of arms for Al Shabaab have been growing between Kenya and Eritrea. Eritrea is accused of sending weapons to the group, but the country has strongly denies the accusation.

"Radar equipments have been brought to some of the Somalia Wilaayaats (provinces) to detect enemy aircraft breaching Somalia’ s airspace, "said Somalimemo, a website used by Al Shabaab.

The site quoting an unnamed official added " other ‘modern equipments ‘were found to counter the aging Kenyan aircraft fleet".

The Al Shabaab official did not give further details about where the group got the new military equipment or where they were installed. Kenyan have lately been carrying out air raids against Al Shabaab targets in southern Somalia where the group controls.

Allied Kenyan and Somali government troops have since early October been carrying out a military action aimed at ousting the militant fighters from the south of the war-ravaged Horn of Africa nation.

The group also asserted they have enlisted the retired senior military officials of former Somali government of Mohamed Siyad Barre to advise on and take part in the fight against Kenyan and Somali government troops.

The radical rebel group of Al Shabaab this week displayed several speedboats and dozens of newly trained fighters carrying AK-47s as well as local traditional fighters armed with spears, bows and arrows in the southern port town of Marka.

Al Shabaab reiterated threats of attacks against Kenyan for sending its troops across the border to Somalia as well as against Burundi and Uganda, two countries who are currently contributing troops to the 9,000-strong African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) based in Mogadishu.

Spot on brother, what a good advise, new comers here particularly in the international forum need to find some time and visit other forums (i.e., other sections within JamiiForums) and see for themselves the way Tanzania forumers criticize each other without enmity or the use of personal insults.

The fact that the next person has a different view from yours doesn't make him/her your enemy, on the contrary this is the best opportunity for you to discuss, learn, and reshape/rethink your strategy and become more successful.

Remember, we emanate from various professions, different levels of eduction, life experience etc, etc.. i believe if we use this platform wisely the benefits will greatly outweigh the perceived negative effects..

My reference is not from these furious arguements. I have been interacting with Kenyans in several occations both in Tanzania and Kenya, what I have observed is the fact that most Kenyans are arrogant but they are not ready to accept that instead they count themselves as agressive. However our kenyan brothers should not worry about we Tanzanians because we know that we can tolerate the arrogance of the Kenyans than the hostile Al shabab.
On the other hand this fierce debate has reflected the natural behaviour of both Kenyans and Tanzanians. Naturally Kenyans are offensive while Tanzanians are defensive. So the invasion of KDF in Somalia in that style is best way for Kenyans, but for JWTZ this could be a hidden operation. Remember we had a problem these Somali poachers in northen parts of Tanzania, they killed several civilians and a reasonable number of policemen including OCD. Tanzania did not declare war with these somali groups which were coordinating their activities in Eastleigh, JWTZ carried an operation which ended the somali disturbance. If you observe KDF and JWTZ(TPDF), you will find that KDF is investing much on offensive logistics while JWTZ is investing in defensive logistics. Now keeping in mind that I'm a Tanzanian I support Kenya to deal successifully with Al shabab and I wish them victory but I think their approach is not good because I don't see the logic of sending uniformed army to deal with invisible enemy. I predict Kenya will end up like Ethiopia in 2006, KDF will take control of cities and villages but will not eliminate this ideologically unified group. The war will be much longer than expected keeping in mind that as long as the kenyans stay in Somalia the hatred of somali towards KDF will be gradually increasing.

Askari Kanzu,I appreciate your widely sourced news and analysis contributions. You have turned this thread into a free supermarket of news,so diverse, rich and informative.Kudos, kweli wewe ni askari kanzu!

I have not changed my views at all. I hope I have not prevented you or anyone else from expressing theirs just because I think KDF is a more than capable force for any foe in the region including allies. You should feel free to express yourself even if the opinions you hold are a far cry from reality.

War Fears: Somalis in Kenya Afraid of Xenophobia

By TOM ODULA Associated Press. NAIROBI, Kenya November 11, 2011 (AP)
somali-journalist.jpgSomali journalist Ahmed Ogle Madey is pictured on his way to pray at a mosque in Nairobi, Kenya Friday, Nov. 11, 2011.

The streets of Nairobi's Somali community are no longer congested. A once-bustling trade in cheap imports is quiet, and the nightlife is almost dead. Many Somalis are staying inside out of fear of xenophobic attacks and police arrests.

Kenyan troops last month moved into southern Somalia in pursuit of al-Shabab militants. Those militants, in return, threatened to retaliate with large-scale terror attacks in Nairobi.

Ethnic Somalis - many of them Kenyan citizens - who live in Nairobi feel caught in the middle.

"There is that feeling of fear. There is fear of an outbreak of xenophobia if a large-scale event takes place, so we are like this - maybe the lull before the storm," said Salah Abdi Sheikh, a Kenyan-Somali who wrote a book on the 1984 massacre of possibly thousands of Somali men by Kenyan government troops.

This time, Somalis have suffered ethnically based harassment and degrading put-downs, although no violent attacks have yet been reported.

Several email messages and postings on social media have been "demonizing Somalis," said Mzalendo Kibunjia, the head of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, a government commission working to promote unity. He said the government is tracking down the people responsible and that his commission is planning to charge them with the use of hate speech, an offense that carries a $10,000 fine or a jail term of three years.

A Somali woman filed a complaint to the commission last week after she was spat on by a man because of her ethnicity, Kibunjia said.

Some Kenyans posted hate messages against Somalis on social media sites following two grenade attacks in Nairobi last month, but the messages died down after a non-Somali Kenyan was arrested and convicted.

Still, Nairobi's Somali neighborhood - Eastleigh - has lost much of its bustling edge since the mid-October push into Somalia by Kenyan troops. Freelance journalist Ahmed Ogle lives in Eastleigh and says business of imported goods and clothes has slowed to a trickle. Merchants are waiting to see if the tension erupts into violence.

"When there is phobia, you know when there is fear for your lives and property, every investor will hold on and wait until this situation changes. So what is happening now is they are just watching," Ogle said.

Fear has also curtailed social activities, he said, with people fearing that if they go out in the evening they could be arrested. Police raids have been carried out in North Eastern province and in Eastleigh. Somalis have also been accused of laundering millions of dollars of pirate ransom money in Eastleigh, which has seen a building boom in recent years. The allegation has never been proved though the government said in 2009 it was investigating it.

Kenyan authorities also suspect the militant Islamist al-Shabab group has clandestine networks in Kenya.

Joshua Orwa Ojode, a deputy minister for internal security, told parliament recently that al-Shabab is like a snake with its tail in Somalia and it head in Nairobi.

The journalist Ogle, however, said that since Kenya's operation against al-Shabab began police have refrained from carrying out mass arrests in Eastleigh, despite threats by a top government official to do so. Police have targeted individuals they suspect of involvement with al-Shabab and arrested them without affecting the community, Ogle said

All good. Nothing personal from me. As a useful rule of thumb, I will let you know if I change my mind on anything.
Do you really believe that I am here waiting for that? Anyway, I hope developments on the ground will help change your mind; sooner rather than later!
