Kenya declares war on Al Shabaab!

I think they should have gotten rid of you when you were still a fetus. to quote Jimmy Rebel (Boondocks)
Don't let your nigglets grow up to be niggers, and its obvious yours did.
Fortunately they didn't. So that Jimmy's quote is irrelevant in this case. My question remains unanswered!

Troops Thwart Car Bomb Attacks in the South

1 December 2011
Dhoblay - - Troops loyal to the Somali interim Federal government in south of the country thwarted two cars laden with explosives, which intended to detonate one of army bases close to the border town of Dhoblay in Lower Jubba region, officials said on Thursday.

The security officials of TFG in southern Somalia confirmed shabelle media that the forces are investigating and asking questions in custody two suicide bombers, who were seized with their bomb cars, as they have been trying to attack the positions of the government soldiers between Tabta and Dhoblay district.

An official in the Dhoblay town, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media told shabelle media that all government troops in Lower Jubba and all border regions along Kenya were put alert any explosion or attack from Al-shabab militants, who recently vowed more blasts on TFG bases every where in the country.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the failed car bomb attack, though the region has frequently been targeted by the Somali insurgent group of Al-Shabab.

Five Somalis Arrested At Lamu Festival Charged
Maureen Mudi. 2 December 2011

FIVE Somali men arrested in Manda during the Lamu Cultural Festival on suspicion of having links to terror activities have been charged in Mombasa. The suspects, who were earlier arraigned in a Lamu court but did not take plea after the court failed to get a Somali interpreter, faced charges of being unlawfully present in the country.

Ali Mohammed, Ahmed Omar, Abdullahi Mohammed, Mohammed Abdi and Jama Mohamud Adan, appeared before principal magistrate Joyce Gandani. They were charged that on November 25, at Manda Bay in Lamu West District, being Somali nationals, they were found unlawfully present in Kenya without any authority or permit.

The court was further told that the suspects were found on the same day at Manda Bay area, while being excluded persons, failed to report their entry to the nearest immigration officer at the point of entry to Kenya. Yesterday, when the charges were read to them, only one suspect pleaded guilty.

The magistrate directed that the case be handled in the afternoon after which all the suspects pleaded guilty to the charges. The suspects were brought under tight security from Lamu, onboard a Mpeketoni police station Land Rover, and locked up for the night before being arraigned in court.

Police had claimed that the suspects arrived at the Manda Bay area on board a speed boat then alighted and proceeded on foot to an unknown destination moments before they were arrested.

They were kept in custody at the Lamu Police Station and arraigned the next day in court, with the Prosecutor, Caleb Mutonyi, asking the court that the case be adjourned to ensure that the police conducted more investigations. The PM directed that a ruling over their sentence be given today.

Kenya 'not necessarily' aiming for Kismayo: minister
AFP
Kenyan soldiers climb into a truck as they prepare to advance near Liboi in Somalia …

The Kenyan army, which entered Somalia in mid-October to fight Somalia's Shebab Islamist rebels, is not necessarily headed for the key port of Kismayo, Kenyan Defence Minister Yusuf Haji said Friday.

"I don't know where this objective came from. We have never stated at any time that Kenya was going to Kismayo," he told journalists when asked how long it would take the troops to reach the port.

"All we said is that we were pushing Shebab away from our boundary and securing our border, and we will go as far as we will go," he said on his return from Khartoum.

When a journalist asked "so the troops will not get to Kismayo?" he replied "Not necessarily."

On November 1, army spokesman Emmanuel Chirchir, describing a series of movements by Kenyan forces, said: "All this is designed to achieve our advance to Kismayo."

Army officers have made several contradictory remarks since the military intervention started.

Please Ulinziguy! try to understand us. When it comes to security issues Tanzania and Kenya have never been allies, this is due to the arrogance of Kenya. As a result for so long Tanzania has been defensively investing much on the South. I don't know what was Kenya doing all the time, but suddenly at this point of no return Kenya is getting interested in cooperating with countries like Tanzania under the excuse of River Nile threat! Tanzania knows that Egypt is a threat when it comes to the river nile waters and this has been the reality from the independence and we have been preparing for it. We now have a SADC defence pact how can we meet a section that requires member states to get in the war on the favour of their partner under any circumstance? Assume one of the member declare war with DRC how can we fulfill such section while we are also required to defend DRC under SADC pact? Now you should not percieve us as if we are trying to destabilise East Africa but its because we have much security interest in SADC than in EAC.

'TOP AL SHABAAB LEADER HELD BY MILITARY'

By Mutinda Mwanzia

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are holding a top leader of the Al Shabaab militia group who defected as the terrorist group continued to suffer heavy losses following the military onslaught.

The militia leader is being grilled by the joint forces leading the operation in Somalia in a bid to get
more details about the militia and its networks in the country.

Speaking during the weekly briefing on the progress of Operation Linda Nchi Saturday, Department of Defence spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna also revealed that KDF has changed tact in its operations and had sealed off regions where the militias were seeking refuge.

Flushed out militants
"We have flushed the militias from the northern and southern sectors. We are now zeroing on the central sector since our intelligence show that they are fleeing to the area," said Oguna. He said Shabaab insurgents had only three options – defecting, surrendering or getting out of Somalia.

"We are not compromising. Our mission is to crush them," said Oguna.

Kenyan troops moved into Somalia in October to fight al-Shabab militants who have promised revenge attacks.

He corrected himself. Col. Oguna is a great patriot and I admire him. Top Al Shabab defecting. Is there any other military in the region capable of these feats, at a comparable casualty rate? No. Go Kenya.

How so? All I see is a colonel reiterating that this operation is not time bound; he says they will not leave until Kenya is completely safe - how is that chickening out?

THE CABINET HAS APPROVED ''RE-HATTING'' OF THE KDF (KENYA DEFENCE FORCES) IN SOMALIA TO AMISOM

Nairobi, the Cabinet has approved the ‘re-hatting' of the KDF in Somalia to Amisom but subject to approval by Parliament.

During a meeting chaired by President Kibaki at State House, Nairobi on Tuesday, the Cabinet gave reasons for the move as arising from a request by the African Union to enhance a combined strategy for the operation against the Al Shabaab.

If the House approves the decision of the Cabinet, this means the game plan for the KDF will change, as they will be under one command, which basically adheres to UN regulations.

Parliament is set to go on recess tomorrow (Thursday) and the matter is likely to be brought to the House either this afternoon or tomorrow afternoon when the Government has time for transacting its business.

The matter was, however, supposed to be presented before the House Business Committee, which met last evening in order for it to allocate time for debate.

UN operations worldwide are aimed at restoration of peace as opposed to aggressive attacks and this is bound to put the war on Al Shabaab by the KDF on a different wavelength.

Damage Assessment

However, Major Chirchir said that Battle Damage Assessment could not be clearly ascertained because of heavy clouds that covered the area during the attack.

In statement to the media, Chirchir said that KDF forces had now completed the first phase of the war and were now preparing for the second phase in a bid to rid the militants of their key strongholds.

"The KDF has now finished phase one of the operation. We are already embarking on the second phase. This will be the biggest war because we want to strike at their strongholds," said Chirchir.

He said that five Al Shabaab fighters are feared dead after a failed attack on a Kenya Navy warship along the coast of Kuday, south of Kismayu on Monday.

The militia, aboard a boat fitted with weapons, attacked the Kenyan soldiers but were intercepted and after a fierce battle, the boat was sunk.

Separately, Al-Shabaab was reported to have attacked Transitional Federal Government (TFG) soldiers where 11 people were killed and 54 seriously injured. 25 of those injured have been airlifted to Garissa and Nairobi for treatment.

The incident took place on Sunday morning. According to Chirchir, the soldiers are out of danger.

Chirchir, at the same time, warned Kenyans not to fall prey to propaganda being circulated by the Al Shabaab especially on social networks and forums.

Also, Air strikes by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have destroyed two Al Shabaab camps in Afmadow inside Somalia, killing scores of militants and destroying their military equipment.

This is the latest attack by KDF in the Operation Linda Nchi, coming hot on the heels of Saturday's clash at Hayo area, which left an estimated 40 militants dead.

Askari Kanzu,
I now see that your assessment of the current situation facing the KDF / Gov't of Kenya was right taking into account several factors like military capacity, warfare/combat experience, 'weather forecasting', rallying int'l support, winning hearts/minds of Kenyan doctors/lecturers that it is not ideal time for labour strikes etc etc
