Reports from the Afmadow district in Somalia's Lower Juba region indicate that unknown warplanes attacked al-Shabaab bases in town on Tuesday, resulting in massive destruction in the targeted compounds as well as surrounding buildings.
Locals confirmed that two planes attacked the two bases in Afmadow, with at least two missiles fired.
I saw the planes. The missiles hit rapidly and there was a lot of smoke and dust, but I cannot confirm if there are any casualties yet, a local resident of Afmadow, who gave his name only as Nahar, told Somalia Report.
The buildings hit were used as recruitment centers by al-Shabaab.
An airstrike hit an al-Shabaab military base in Kismayo, Lower Juba region, early on Thursday. The al-Shabaab base saw massive detonations which caused numerous casualties, yet because al-Shabaab has not allowed anyone to approach the area, the number of dead remains unknown, said witnesses in Kismayo who spoke to Somalia Report.
"A very loud explosion was heard from al-Shabaabs military bases near Kismayo, especially the new military base which the militants began to use after their old bases were pounded by airstrikes. There have been numerous casualties but nobody knows how many there were, or what kind of explosion devices, reported a witness in Kismayo who prefers to remain anonymous. Witnesses in Kismayo told Somalia Report that small cars arrived immediately on the scene, removed a number of dead and wounded fighters who they took to a nearby hospital. "The explosion was huge. We heard the blast and saw the dark smoke fill the sky, surely there are many casualties. But al-Shabaab hasn't allowed civilians to see their dead and injured.
Many residents have been trying to see for themselves but the area is still restricted, reported a resident of Kismayo who gave his name as Ali. There have been several airstrikes against camps belonging to the al-Shabaab militant group in the area, most recently in Hiiraan region when another blast hit a al-Shabaab base in Bulo-Barde town in the middle of last month.

The Kenyan military fighting the militant group al-Shabaab has captured two men suspected to be associated with the Islamist insurgents, military sources said on Wednesday.
The suspects were netted at Dhamase district, some 40km from Elwak in Gedo region, where majority of the terror group are camping.
We captured the two al-Shabaab men at Dhamase district on Tuesday where they were hiding under a house that belongs to one of the residents, said a Kenyan Army officer identified only as Njoroge.
Local elders said none of the two suspects was known to the residents.
We saw the Kenyan soldiers coming towards our location late afternoon and got into a neighboring house from where they came out with the two men whom we had never seen before, said Ahmed Hashi, a local elder.
