Kenya turns to home in Shabaab crackdown

(Reuters) - Kenya charged two doctors Friday with being members of Somalia's al Shabaab militant group, intensifying a crackdown against the rebels as its troops pressed on with a cross-border operation in Somalia. After a spate of kidnappings against foreigners that have threatened the East African country's major tourism industry, Kenyan troops moved suddenly into Somalia to secure the porous border from al Qaeda-linked rebels.

Kenya has long looked nervously at its anarchic neighbor and has launched some brief incursions in the past, but this operation is on a much larger scale that raises the risk of reprisals from al Shabaab who have proven capable of deadly suicide attacks within and outside Somalia.

As Kenyan and Somali government troops tried to secure militant strongholds in the south of the country, Kenyan security forces turned their attention within their own borders and arrested two doctors in a Nairobi neighborhood with a large Somali community.

"Ali Omar Salim and Adan Hassan Hillow were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity on or before October 20 in Nairobi ... (and) found engaging in an organized criminal activity by being members of al Shabaab," their charge sheet at Nairobi chief magistrate's court said.

Deputy police spokesman Charles Owino said the two had been detained in the Eastleigh suburb -- which has a large Somali population from both Kenya and Somalia -- earlier this week.

"We are cracking down everywhere. Within the country and in Somalia," Owino said.

Reuters reporters have in the past seen al Shabaab fighters in Eastleigh, sometimes returning for medical treatment, and Somali parents living there complain that some mosques actively recruit youths to fight for al Shabaab.

Kenya planned The Somali war two years ago after sensing that Ugandan and Burundian troops had no capacity to dislodge Al Shabaab from major key Somali cities.

East Africa's biggest economy entered Somalia last Sunday and they have so far captured six Al Shabaab controlled towns and vowed to Capture Kismayu---a haven for Pirates and Al Key revenue source for Al shabaab.

There is acrimony within the Kenyan Millitary that Uganda's UPDF forces have done little since they entered Somalia and this could have been a catalyst for the Kenyan Army to swing into action.UPDF large numbers of soldiers is poorly trained and lack equipment to deal with Al Shabaab

NAIROBI/MOGADISHU, Oct 22 (Reuters) - Kenya said Somalia's al Shabaab militants were on the run after it deployed more troops in southern Somalia to secure its border from rebels Nairobi accuses of kidnapping foreigners on its soil. But in the capital Mogadishu, the al Qaeda-linked militants have been putting up stiff resistance against African peacekeepers (AMISOM) and government troops who in August had driven the rebels out of most of the city.

Kenyan troops stormed the Somali border six days ago to oust the militants who they say have taken several foreigners hostage in recent weeks threatening the country's reputation as a relatively safe investment and tourism destination.

Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula said Nairobi was making gains against the insurgents.

"We've made tremendous progress and al Shabaab are definitely on the run. They are also looking weaker by the day," he told reporters late on Friday after an emergency meeting of regional group IGAD in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. Kenya has launched brief cross-border incursions into Somalia after the militants launched an insurgency in 2007 but this operation is on a much larger scale, signalling Nairobi's determination to eradicate the threat to the country.

Witnesses said on Friday that armoured vehicles and trucks carrying weaponry, food supplies and tents were seen leaving four military camps in Isiolo in northern Kenya and heading towards the border.

"The whole area is like a warzone. It's like the whole of our military is going to Somalia," said Ali Barre, a resident at Diff village in Wajir south, near the Kenyan-Somali border.

Kenya is the latest of Somalia's neighbours to become deeply involved militarily in a country that has not had an effective government for the last 20 years and where al Shabaab's presence has had serious security repercussions on the region.

An enemy within. Kenyans need to brainstorm about this. Even Tanzanians security forces needs to brainstorm this also.

The U.S. Embassy in Kenya warned a terrorist attack may be imminent in the East African nation, six days after Kenyan soldiers entered neighboring Somalia to combat al-Qaeda-linked rebels.

The embassy received "credible information of an imminent threat of terrorist attacks directed at prominent Kenyan facilities and areas where foreigners are known to congregate, such as malls and night clubs," said a statement e-mailed by the State Department today.

"U.S. citizens should take this information into account when planning travel and consider deferring travel at this time," the message said.

Kenya sent troops to Somalia on Oct. 16 after officials blamed the kidnappings of foreign tourists and aid workers in Kenya on al-Shabaab, a militia that has pledged allegiance to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

Somalia, on Kenya's northeastern border, hasn't had a functioning government since the 1991 overthrow of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
