Kakamega has signed an agreement with a Chinese firm to build 9,000 housing units for Sh4.5 billion.
The property deal was inked with Henan Gounji Development, which will build the two and three bedroom houses on land provided by the county government.
The project will be implemented in three phases with the first stage of construction set to start in December comprising 3,000 two and three-bedroom houses, said Land and Urban Planning executive Suleiman Sumba.
The houses in the first phase would be sold to civil servants.
The county is expected to provide 19 hectares of land in Amalemba in exchange for undisclosed stake in the project.
“We want to construct low-cost housing units to meet the demand by locals and professionals seeking employment. It’s our responsibility to offer accommodation for town dwellers in spite of land scarcity,” Mr Sumba told the Business Daily on phone on Thursday.
The second phase will also have 3,000 housing units targeting the public while the remaining units in the
third stage will be rental houses. Each phase will cost Sh1.5 billion.
“The Chinese will own the houses but they will pay us a fee annually,” said Mr Sumba.
He urged private investors to venture into real estate opportunities in the county
