Confirming the incident, Marsabit Police Commander Ben Kogo noted that the officers had crossed the border to secure the release of a member of the military reserve forces – Salim Kala – who had been arrested on October 21 for allegedly fishing along the shores of Lake Turkana on the Ethiopian side.
"They had gone to Ethiopia to secure the release of a reservist when they were arrested. We are yet to establish why they were arrested but we're trying to negotiate with Ethiopian authorities for them to be released," Mr Kogo was quoted by the Nation.
OCS Nalianya together with his officers were fully armed when they drove off to the neighbouring country.
Their firearms were, however, confiscated and the Toyota Land Cruiser (GK B414E) impounded.
Efforts by Kenyans.co.ke to reach the Ministry of Defence for more information were futile.
The arrest of the officers is likely to cause a serious diplomatic row between Kenya and Ethiopia.
