Kenya’s population is 38.6 million

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 31 – The population of Kenya has hit 38.6 million according to the much awaited results of the Population and Housing Census conducted in August last year.

This compares with about 30 million Kenyans in 1999, when the last census was carried out.

Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya has released the ethnic tally that places Kikuyu as the most populous tribe.

6. Kenyan Somali (nullified awaiting recount) 2,385,572
7. Kisii 2,205,669

9. Meru 1,658,108
10. Turkana (also to be recounted) 988,592
11. Maasai 841,622
12. Teso 338,833

Mr Oparanya said the least populous tribes are:

Taita 273,519
Kuria 560,401
Samburu 237,179
Tharaka 175,905
Mbeere 168,155

In terms of religion the Minister gave a breakdown as: "The Catholics 9,010,684 Protestants; 18,307,466, Other Christians that do not fall under the above 4,559,584.

Muslims are 4,304,798, the Hindu 53,393, traditionalists 635,352. Other religions not falling under those are 557,450 and there are people who do not belong to any religion but believe in God they were 922,128.

Sasa, hapo nilipobold, how come there are Kenyans practicing Hinduism without the 'tribe' traditionally known to practice Hinduism being included in the census? In other words, what population of Kenya is of Asian origin? And Arabic?

As for Pokola, knowing the tribal make-up of a country does not necessarily indicate fragmentation (though it might exist)

Its not a tribal thing, lets look beyond that... Ethnic numeration is an important element in any multicultural society. Cultural preservation and revitalization need not be a an element of ethnic cleansing. In fact, failure to respect other people's culture usually is. How can we justify affirmative action for the marginalized tribes so that they do not become annihilated by the the dominant tribes. How can we ensure that these tribes, with their rich cultural heritage do not die?

I know Kenyans tribal differences have been used by politicians to separate us, that should not be a reason for us to overlook our tribes. Alot of people will politicize this but I think we are past that tribalism era, we buried it with the old constitution.

I don't see the reason for hiding such info as tribes pop. religion etc... because there is nothing wrong with it. I think it will enhance better planning to ensure that no groups are left underdeveloped as it has been under the previous laws which did not have counties and such..

The masai community alone is larger than Asian + Arabic combined... I think you can make a good guess from that.

Injinia my brother, there are 42 tribes in Kenya, most are not included in this summary. Kenyan Indians are many, I remember voting with some in the referendum, some Kenyan tribes are also not included, you'll have to get the final list to know the exact numbers.
