Kenya is set to have a first state-of-the-art rugby stadium after the National Assembly passed a motion for the establishment and construction of the facility.
The stadium is likely to be constructed off Ngong Road close to the Jamhuri Park as earlier suggested by the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU).
The development is in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election pledge that included the construction of two world-class stadiums – one for cricket and the other for rugby – in a bid to bolster the growth of young talent.
The President said land has already been set aside for the two stadiums and plans were being finalised to start the construction.
The Government will also build two other stadiums in Mombasa and Eldoret with the one at the coast likely to hold some rugby actions although it will mainly focus on modern athletics with an initial 21,000 capacity.
Former KRU chairman Mwangi Muthee had set aside plans to build a multi-purpose rugby stadium in Kenya as the country hunt to host future international events including a leg of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens Series.

However his dream did not materialize after he resigned two months before his contract elapsed with Omwela taking over the reins.
