Monthly earnings from the Mombasa-Nairobi-Naivasha SGR has increased to kes 1.04 billion monthly over the last two months since the president lifted curfew to 9 pm from 7 pm.

June’s earnings amounted to nearly Sh1.04 billion after President Kenyatta eased curfew hours to 9 pm-4 am from previous 7 pm-5 am. Data shows that freight earnings stood at Sh939.11m in May and Sh754.5m a month earlier.

This has been attributed to growth in exports going through the SGR, which has increased from Sh47.20 billion in May 2020 to Sh49.05 billion in June 2020 a big jump from 2019 which saw a lot of trains carry empty containers to Mombasa port. The value of imports also increased from Sh108.70 billion in May 2020 to Sh121.60 billion in June 2020.

Total imports share of throughput during the period, at the port of Mombasa decreased from 84% to 79%,as exports saw a jump in share of the throughput at Mombasa port to 21%, which shows an unfavourable trade balance.

Notably, a larger share of imported cargo through the port of Mombasa for the five months was containerized cargo that stood at 66%. Kenya accounted for the bulk of total throughput at 64%; whereas about 36% of total throughput was for transit market

Container wait time after customs release worsened during the period due to clients delay in picking up their cargo from Mombasa port, Nairobi ICD and Naivasha ICD. Ship turn around time saw an improvement of 12% over 2019 to 0.28 days due to ongoing improvements at the port of Mombasa and the direct loading of cargo onto the SGR trains heading to and from Nairobi ICD and Naivasha ICD.

Transit time from Mombasa to Kampala and Kigali increased due to COVID 19 restrictions at the borders. Uganda remains the biggest transit market destination for cargo passing through Mombasa port accounting for 3.28 million metric tonnes during the reporting period.

In a bid to develop resilience and prepare the Northern Transport Corridor to respond to emerging issues, the report, while appreciating ongoing conversations and roadmaps being suggested by the Member States(Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya) and different stakeholders aimed at facilitating a quick socio-economic recovery, the following proposals may hold: a regional multi-stakeholder response approach where risk factors and disaster risk reduction measures are integrated into both national and regional policies, plans and programmes; and regional and international cooperation in assessing, monitoring and responding to transboundary hazards.

The sgr looks like it will break even sooner than expected. It needs 1.5 billion monthly to operate the trains and at the current rate of cargo revenue growth it seems sgr will maintain itself even without passengers.

Reasons for future growth projections:-

i) IMF estimates that the Kenya logistics sector will be worth a whopping $5 billion by 2023.
ii) Currently under construction of an MGR link to Naivasha ICD going to malaba will provide seamless connection for transit cargo while financing for the phase 2b is being processed.

NB: All predictions by naysayers have failed to come to fruition. The sgr will by next year generate enough money from cargo to cater for the operations of both cargo and passenger services.
