Kenya: The Standard Gauge Railway Takes Shape

The same applies to Tanzania with Bagamoyo port and the new SGR along central route.

Kwa walio na maono ya mbali, wataelewa hili.

People here comparing Kenya and Brazil and Greece to debt ratio and ability to pay make me wonder Bavaria I here you and Wat u mean by payability ya Kenya but get this agriculture in Kenya has the ability to give Kenya upto 72bn$ Kenya receives 1.4mn tourists but still has an ability to get to wea dubai a desert receiving nearly 120mn tourists a year Pia manufacturing fishing industry textile etc

I saw a report on cnn that staged that in Greece y have built too many buildings and pavements that
It's now considered illegal to set up another paved structure thus they had to shut down all cement factory that produces for Greece and generally for Europe cause every one has a house they just can't be able to put other structures - - Brazil is 2.8trn $ economy

On the other hand sub Sahara Africa is now 3trn $ that is 700mn people we have the power to spend
Thus lift up tourism, banking sector commodity market etc its just that our governments are investing in the wrong things that SGR project would have been

Put only in Malindi and kwale and the rest of the money used to set up irrigation in those two counties that wen combined are equal to Croatia in size

I now get ur argument but while I agree to some extent

Africa is trying too hard thinking big instead of starting small cause Malindi and kwale are just next to the

Ocean the largest desalination plant in Israel cost 2.2bn$ and it cleans the ocean water for human consumption

Instead of building SGR which is a long term investment

They would have built an irrigation system and made mombasa the value addition point for the two counties products

Oooh well SGR WILL IN THE END PAY OFF BUT NOW IT WILL REQUIRE EXTRA HARD WORK TO SEE THAT..... SO AM LUKEWARM WUTH UR STATEMENTS HAPA!!

MK254 at least our government has never suffered a cash crunch. Iconoclastes having debt is usual, but even while borrowing you should know your limits. Remind me, which country has the highest debt to GDP ratio in EA? KENYA! Congrats guys, you lead in that too!

msemakweli ha ha ha ha funny how u laugh at Kenya for having debts while Tanzania has huger debts than Kenya nn mbaya na waTZ mko shugli za Kenya na mna 4times what we have as external debts

WATZ hamko sirius sai mnajenga BAGAMOYO WHICH WILL make u the most indebted country in Africa per GDP ratio

Also u receive more aid than Kenya despite being peaceful and having no food problems yet pple still die of hunger in TZ

hebu mjione kwanza kabla ya kutuanzia

There is a difference between cash crunch and debt

Ukiwa na deni ya watu ya 1000 na una personal expenditure ya 800 alafu uamue kulipa ur debtors 500 ubaki na 300 means u r servicing ur debts but u still don't have enough money for ur self

Kenya this year has 7bn $ debt payable upto 2091 the longest debtor

Last year Kenya paid 1.2bn$ in debt tukarudi 2.2bn$ alafu we borrowed ya sgr and other small ones from AFDB n world bank ika turusha 7bn $ the government serviced its debt to maintain its credit rating but haikuwacha enough to use so the government is experiencing a cash crunch hyo ndio cash crunch un lay man tanzanian way

The government can still pay all its debt by 3 ways
1.heavy taxation
2. Use of foreign currency reserves now valued at 8bn$
3. By borrowing locally to service external debts

So tafadhali stop laughing at ur neighbours specks wen u have a log in ur eye diwmit tanzanian msemakweli

Tanzania has huge debts

In 2012 wen Kenya had only 3bn$ debt

Tanzania had 11bn$

Since 2012 Kenya has borrowed for SGR, MOMBASA PORT LAMU PORT GALANA IRRIGATION SCHEME GREENFIELD ALL THIS IS LESS THAN 7BN$

WHILE TANZANIA HAS SINGLE HANDEDLY SUPPARSED KENYA IN BORROWING BY ONE PROJECT BAGAMOYO PORT

WACHA HYO BAGAMOYO IFIKE HALFWAY KUJENGA MUONE HYO 20BN$ DEBT MTAILIOAJE
TANZANIA WILL GRIND TO A HALT.....

U need to be put to ur place just because in Kenya kuna inclusiveness that I see every one taking part in debt discussion and becoming critical of the government doesn't mean Tanzania hakuna shida we fought with our blood to see our freedom for expression that we enjoy today that is why we can talk that we have nearly 6-7bn$ debts

In Tanzania criticism to the police alone can land u in a tanzanian jail u have more debts than Kenya but ur busy covering Kenyan debt issue badala mujiangalie

We have our FREEDOM FOR FREE SPEECH HATA KAMA NI KU CRITISISE THE PRESIDENT WE FOUGHT HARD FOR THAT WE GEt TO SHOUT TO THE WHolE WORLD tHAT WE HAVE DEBTS

THAT IS NEARLY 6-7BN$ DEBT

BUT TANZANIA MNA 11BN$ DEBT NA SAI BAGAMOYO NI 100% CHINESE [10BN$]

PIA SGR YENU 6BN$ AMONG OTHERS BY 2030 MTAKUWA 30BN$ DEBT NA HAMTAONGEA BT SISI YETU

IT'S JUST 7BN$ BUT WE ARE SHOUTING U WUD THINK WE ARE AT WAR!!!!!

FREE SPEECH FOR KENYA IT IS AND I LOVE THAT

WE DONT HAVe TO MINE OUR BORDERS WITH TNT AND OTHER MINES TO KEEP SOMALIS OUT OF KENYA LIKE ETHIOPIA HAS DONE

WE HAVE LAWS THAT IS WHY KENYA IS WEA IT IS

THE GOOD AND THE BAD FREESPEECH ANY DAY!!!

sam999 did you really have to copy and paste the WHOLE table?
Anyways, what matters is the debt-to-GDP ratio, and 50% is the maximum allowed ratio for developing countries.
You people have already hit 50%, and I'm sure that was even before the SGR.
Tanzania's still at 40%.

msemakweli honestly bro who said debt is a bad thing? i think the cartoonist and yourself are not very accurate on this. what do i mean? Incurring debt is GOOD as long as the return can be proven beyond reasonable doubt in which case the SGR might actually prove itself. read up on infrastructure investments. Debt has the effect of making people work harder to return the initial investment. It matters not if it is at the personal, corporate or government levels, its a matter of scale really. I think the word debt has been abused. How i miss the days gay meant happy.

sam999 weigh in with stats bro

Most likely the real trains will look the same. Heavy cargo trains all over the world are mostly ugly.
