The University of Nairobi (UoN) was ranked among the top universities in the world according to the World University Rankings 2022 report released by Times Higher Education.

In the newly released report, UoN scooped 563 globally and eleventh in Africa.

This is a significant improvement from last year's ranking where the university emerged in the 600-800 category.
Further, UoN was ranked the top university within the East African region with the runner-up, Makerere University in Uganda, appearing in the 600-800th category.

Kenyatta University was listed in the reporter section – where universities that participated in the ranking process but did not make the list get a notable mention.

The universities are also provided with feedback on areas they needed to improve on in order to aid them in future rankings.

"For the first time, our readers will also be able to see the wider range of universities that are actively working towards appearing in the rankings," read part of the report.

Out of the 1,662 universities ranked globally, ten African universities emerged in the top 600 category. South Africa took the lion's share with six universities on the top 600 list, with Nigeria following with two institutions.

The ranking is based on 13 performance indicators that measure an institution's performance in four areas notably: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

UoN has been exceptional in various rankings in the recent past with the majority of people hailing the institution for being ranked among the top tier.

A report by Webometrics in August 2020, also ranked UoN as the top institution in East Africa and tenth within the continent.

In the report, only eight Kenyan universities appeared in the top 200 African universities.
