Dodoma. Tanzanian farmers and traders sold 89, 725.35 million tonnes of maize in Kenya, Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between July 2020 and December 2020, the Parliament was told.

Also, the Cereals and Other Produce Board (CPB) has bought 24, 829.17 tonnes of maize from Farmers.

The ministry also said the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) purchased 73,831.15 tonnes of maize worth Sh48.42 billion from farmers and their respective groups between May and December 2020 from all eight zones.

Deputy minister of Agriculture Hussein Bashe released the figures on Monday, May 3, 2021 when responding to a question from Special Seats MP, Dr Pindi Chana (CCM-Njombe Region) during the

Question and Answers session.

Dr Chana sought to know how the government was organized to look for reliable maize markets for Njombe farmers.

Speaking at the Parliament, Mr Bashe said, 11,004 tonnes of maize purchased by NFRA from the eight zones came from the Makambako zone that constitute Njombe Region that produced 332,457 tonnes of maize in the 2019/20 season.

"In the 2021/2022 fiscal year, the government is considering to introduce bonded warehouses in countries with high markets of agricultural produce including China, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and South Sudan in order to preserve and advertise agricultural produce something to easen selling of the produce in respective countries," he said.

Earlier, Mr Bashe outlined four issues including connecting flight farmers with maize processors producing flour and livestock feeds as well as the government purchasing maize through the NFRA and CPB.

"Other measures are reaching agreements with other countries like Kenya, DRC, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and ensure transporters are given necessary services immediately including permits," he said.

He said in the 2020/21, Njombe was connected with the Silverland Company that managed to purchase 40,000 to 50,000 tonnes of the produce.

The value of Kenya’s avocado exports jumped 93 per cent to Sh4.26 billion in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous period, data by the Horticulture Directorate shows, buoyed by improved demand in global markets.

Kenya, which is ranked eighth globally in avocado production, exported 26,481 tonnes of the fruit between January and March this year compared to 15,101 tonnes in 2020.

The jump in avocado export volumes between January and March, came as Kenya lifted a ban on the shipment of the produce to markets abroad to curb pre-mature harvests by cartels keen on profiteering from global demand.

The Directorate of Horticulture allowed the resumption of export of the popular Fuerte variety on February 15 followed by Hass on March 8 after close to a four-month ban.

The horticulture regulator had banned the export of the two popular avocado varieties last November to curb the harvesting of the immature crop.

The avocado season for these main varieties normally comes to an end at that time resulting in a shortage of the fruit in the country, pushing up the cost of the commodity.

Kenya currently ships the bulk of its avocados to Europe and the Middle East.

Most of the consignments are currently heading to Europe, which is one of Kenya’s major markets for avocados in terms of returns, with some exported to the Middle East.

A few batches are exported to China as Kenya is yet to meet the conditions set by Beijing to warrant the exports of these fruits in large quantities.

Good returns

The good returns from the sale of the fruit have attracted more Kenyans into cultivating it amid rising global demand.

“There has been an increase in area under cultivation and a shift from the traditional avocado growing zones to the Rift Valley and parts of western Kenya,” the Horticulture Directorate.

Avocado has been a major contributor of the income from the horticulture earnings, raking in nearly half of the total returns from fruits.

Kenya’s avocado exports jumped 15 per cent to 68,000 metric tonnes over the 12 months to October 2020, fetching the country Sh14 billion.

Mzee Mimi ni mwanasayansi.
Sitaki maelezo mareefu.
Leta calculation

Mzee mathematics ni vitu viko wazi
The value of Kenya’s avocado exports jumped 93 per cent to Sh4.26 billion in the first quarter of this year.

Mzee wewe math hujui!?
Increase ni 93%
Chukua 100-93 unapata 7%
7/100x4.26 = Ksh0.3B

Mzee chukua hiyo 0.3bx12
Ksh3.6b kwa mwaka.
Mzee hebu jaribu na wewe kuweka math hapa tukuone.

May be mathematics hamjui.
Man!! what kind of math is this uñatuaibisha

Ungefanya hivi.

Let's say mauzo ya first quarter ya mwaka jana yalikuwa x sasa basi

X+0.93x= 4.26

1.93x= 4.26
X= 4.26/1.93
X = 2.207...... B hayo ndo mauzo ya previous year kwenye quarter one.

IT mbobezi!! Unazingua

Kanishangaza sana hasa pale alipojiita mwanasayansi Na IT mbobezi.

Why tuzalishe sisi halafu major exporters wawe wao!? Maana yake tumelala.
