Kenyan & Tanzanian Surburbs

Sasa naandika wimbo ili wengine waelewe kwamba suburbs sio mito, milima, mabonde na magorofa ya ofisi. Duh! Kiingereza noma!

Mfano wa suburbs hapa chini!

Big lie!

There are no large water bodies in the city of Nairobi that's why you can't show it. FYI the word suburb includes everything surrounding the residential area that's why when you mention the suburb of cities like Chicago IL, Lakewood OH, St Louis MO, Miami Fl, Mombasa KE and Dar es Salaam TZ you can't miss the waters. Got it!

There are different facts that we can't compare with Kenya in terms of housing and i think it is more good in Tanzanian way. In Kenya a big area arable and good land is owned by rich people thus make many Kenyan not to have a land where they can build houses, most of their families in the village are given a portion of land by the owner and those poor families work in rich people's estates. Others who still have their portions they build small houses and a big portion is used to plant those cash crops, thus it is too hard for a family to give a portion for a son to build house. Thus most of them are in towns now and they just rent houses for stay. Actually the government has priority on this because otherwise more slums could be built.

In Tanzania the situation is different. land is plenty. In our clan we are more than ten grandchildren but we can have a portion for house and farm each though our fathers own some too plus more plenty of arable and good land which is not occupied we can just go and start at our own.. Another fact is Tanzania government is not serious on land owning. You can build your house in town after negotiationing with former land owner cheaply and stay for more than 20 years and they will tell you, 'you built house in unplanned area' and they will pay you money (with a lot of disturbance anyway) and give you a portion in planned area. what a deal, most of us do so and have our own houses and rent to some knew people in town and get money to get a portion in planned area. Thats y, the NHC has to set unworthy amount to rent house to get customers otherwise it is cool to sell those houses. We don't need block houses for rent now we just need low prices of building material to make good houses.
All in all I appreciate Kenyan way to save many. Seriously i know those are architech photos, in reality i don't like Kenyan streets. I know some.

Mekatili I dont know if you are the same personality as '(findingnimo)' on flicker. If you are, congratulations for a nice photography project of Kenyan suburbs. If you are not, you should credit findingnimo for making it easier for you to scare the hell out of JF (Tanzanian) guys, all you did was just copy paste his good carefully selected photos.

I am Tanzania, and have lived in estates in Nairobi, including highrise, ngumo and umoja. These estates you show are well planned and appealing on photo. Such estates are rare in Tanzania.

Nevertheless, the system in Tanzania is "free-range", everyone build their houses as they wish, you can face west, or south, build a high scrapers amongst one-storey buildings...etc. You buy your plot anywhere you want. The land is plenty, no rush really. Real estate is only scalling up here, we are still enjoying ujamaa...

So although we admit absence of such estates, you must also agree that you have carefully selected photos of kenyan surburbs to silence/scare tanzanians who will in any case take 15 yrs to collect as good photos as those of findingnimo as posted on flicker Flickr: findingnimo's Photostream

Thanks for alarming us anyways!
Bye

If you want to argue about slums there ia thread for that, hapa tulikubaliana according to the description of the thread to put up pictures of planned settlements. Kuna slums Kenya na Watanzania wanatumia issue ya slums to attack Kenya ilhali huku kwetu 85% wanaishi kwenye slums! Kuna slums South Africa, Brazil na nchi zote ambazo bado zina develop. @safari_ni_Safari ameshindwa na lakusema akaona bora to attack. Wale ambao kazi yao ni negativity sasa wakati ndio huu! onyensha kwenu wacha kula na kulala ukifikiria Kenya!

I agree with you but when mekatilili started the thread he said......

I am also from Bongo and the fact is we need another 30 years to catch up. Many Tanzanians on JF are always talking about Kibera and slums but Tanzania has the fastest growing slum population in Africa and > 75% of our urban population live in slums way bigger than in Kenya. Anyways we are not here to talk about slums but because some Tanzanians on JF are always talking about Kenyan slums they were given the chance to show off their cities lakini ni kama kushindana na ndovu kwenda kujisaidia. Sasa wameshindwa, yaani mtu anapata nafasi ya kuonyesha kwenu lakini bado wewe unafikiria jinsi ya kumvamia mwenzako. lol we have issues!

Living in Kenya is an eye opener.

Tanzania cannot compete with kenya on this field, kwa hapa tuwape hongera zao tu. wamejitahidi sana, sisi hatutaweza hadi sisiemu iondoke madarakani. ukweli ndo huo.
