Apart from the notable peddling of our self-righteous introspections, authorities everywhere have their downfalls within EA. Right now even as we chat, debate and exchange ideas...We can smell the prejudices that we bear. In EA we are enclosed in polished cocoons. If not division among tribal lines, it is in political party phsychology. We can put different topics here that entail several subjects and discuss but immediately when we smell tribal and ideological party differences we slide back to our lofty cocoons. And this is where most of you will agree that we still have miles to go in EA. That is the irony with Africa we are torn between oureselves by our political idols that we look upon very much.

A trip to the dump is part of the school day for nearly a quarter of the 850 students at St Johns Informal School, which borders Dandora. For some of them, the food waste is the only meal they will have all day - and so the school does not mete out any punishment for absenteeism.

Rahab Ruguru, a 42-year-old mother of six, lives on the outskirts of Dandora. Apart from a four-year-old, Mrs Ruguru takes her whole family scavenging at weekends and after classes - to earn money for school fees, books and uniforms. No matter what regulations the bureaucrats in Nairobi may issue, she does not see a time they will stop picking through Kenya's leftovers.
