In a statement, the World Bank said the Kenyan national would steer the group whose financial commitment stands at KSh 424.3 billion in all 27 projects.

The Ugandan government is battling the coronavirus pandemic whose economic and health disruptions cannot be underestimated.

Stellar career

Kariuki has over 30 years of experience in development planning, climate change, and disaster risk management.

Kariuki served in several leadership positions at the global financial institution and most recently as the country manager for Zimbabwe.

She holds a master’s degree in urban and regional planning from the State University of New York. She has also undertaken several short courses.

Patrick Amoth at WHO

Kariuki's appointment followed that of Kenya's acting director-general of Health, Patrick Amoth, who was named the president of the World Health Organisation (WHO) executive board.

Amoth was elected during the 149th session of the WHO executive board held on Wednesday, June 2.

Following the election, Amoth took over from India's Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, who assumed the position in May 2020.

The election was an elevation of Kenya's health official, who was voted as the vice president of the WHO executive board on May 22, 2020.

The board holds meetings at least twice a year, with the first one coming up in January while the other is convened in May immediately after the health assembly.
