Kenya’s telco giant Safaricom is in “advanced talks” with the Ethiopian government to introduce its popular M-Pesa mobile money service to neighbouring Ethiopia, a market of 100 million people, two sources said on Tuesday.

Britain’s Vodafone, Safaricom’s parent company, will license the use of the M-Pesa trade name to an Ethiopia-based bank while Safaricom will host the servers in Nairobi, one telecoms industry source told Reuters.

Ethiopia’s state telecommunications monopoly, Ethio telecom, will carry the service, the source added. Started in 2007, M-Pesa has nearly 30 million users in Kenya.

Wawe au wasiwe halituhusu ndewe wala sikio!. Lengo ni kutanua kote kote hadi hukoooo... Uhabeshi. Najua wapo tuu, ila ni mabuti wametoa wakipita kimya kimya ndio wasisikike.

Safi sana, the right step towards integration.

Tukiwaambia prospects are very good up north (ET and SSD) wanajazwa na povu na hasira.

A market of almost 100million people is remarkable once it's opened up. Kenya and Ethiopia is the way forward.

It's Vodafone licencing the use of Mpesa to an Ethiopian bank. Keep dreaming that u own Mpesa!

Hahaha Vodafone is seeking rights to operate in ET (vodafone is safcoms parent company)

Safcom runs and operates mpesa. The servers for serving ET will be located in NBO. Safaricom is the largest company in terms of revenue in east and central africa and mpesa is a Kenyan innovation to the world

I'm sure you hate the fact that Ethiopia is opening up its market. You have nothing to offer it while Kenya is ready to jump on the opportunity.
Mpesa is just the first step. Soon it will be everything from banks to insurance to even small exporters.
Tanzania stick to Burundi na msitusumbue.

Bring the shareholders of Mpesa! FYI Vodafone own Mpesa n Safaricom was a launching pad.
Vodafone is a British company. I've never heard any British claim they own Mpesa.
Mpesa is and will always be a symbol of Kenya. And this getting into Ethiopia is a great step for Ethiopia and Kenya trade.

For your info. very British companies like Weetabix and Britannia are not even owned by Britons.
But when anyone eats Britannia biscuits, they never think of India.
Lamba lolo.

Ata ningeongeza. Chelsea is owned by Roman Abramovich.
But Chelsea is NOT a Russian club.

Yaani Geza Ulole umeenda ukaanzisha thread ambayo ina contents za uzi huu lakini ukatumia kichwa tofauti? Eti The real owners of M-pesa are to licence it to an Ethiopian bank. Man are you like five years old??? Act your age, with due respect!
