THE resignation of South African President Thabo Mbeki is a great loss and major blow to Africa, African Union (AU) Chairman, President Jakaya Kikwete has said.
Mr Kikwete said it is a great blow to the continent to have lost a prominent leader who has had immense contribution to the development of Africa.
The president made the comments when addressing reporters during the United Nations High Level Event on Africas Development Needs on Monday.
He said that it is saddening to learn that Mr Mbeki is no longer the president of South Africa and that absence of his leadership is a great loss to Africa because of his prominence and prowess.
Mr Mbeki, he said, partook in establishing many development programmes for Africa, citing the New Partnership for Africas Development (NEPAD) as his personal initiative.
In another development, Mr Kikwete said that Tanzania is doing well in some areas and failing in others with regards to the implementation of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The president was responding to questions on Tanzanias implementation of MDGs and if at all it is possible for the country to attain them in the remaining seven years.
He mentioned the areas that the country is performing well as education, gender equality in accessing education especially in primary and secondary schools and reducing infant mortality rate.
Mr Kikwete said that while only half of the timeframe to attain the goals remains, he still believes that even the most difficult targets could be attained so long as rich countries that had promised resources to attain the goals fulfil their promises.
