Fresh news

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 27 – Kenya has been ranked second in Africa and 64 worldwide in the speed of internet at 10.11Mbps in 2018, dropping 13 places compared to the 2016/2017 period.
The Worldwide broadband speed league 2018 report shows Madagascar, with speeds of 24.87Mbps, has the fastest internet in Africa and is ranked 22 globally.
It takes 27 minutes to download a 5GB HD movie in Madagascar compared to 1 hour and 7 minutes to download the same movie.
The report attributes Madagascar’s high speeds to the underwater EASSy cable that supplies the island’s urban centres with broadband speeds.
“Most other African nations aren’t so lucky, with 7 out of the 38 included nations having to get by on average speeds of less than 1Mbps,” notes the report.
South Africa, Cape Verde, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Namibia, Burundi, Mauritius and Uganda finish the top 10 African countries in the high-speed internet report.
In Singapore, which has the fastest internet speeds in the world, it takes 11 minutes and 18 minutes to download the HD movie.
The speed tests were conducted between June 2017 and May 2018.

Government hopes advisor deal with Huawei and new solar-powered data center will make Tanzania the East African hub
Tanzania is making a bid to become the data hub for East Africa, as the government announces a new $93.6 million data center, and appoints Huawei as its advisor.
The data center will be solar powered with battery backup, and have high bandwidth courtesy of Huawei, Tanzania’s minister for communications, science and technology, Prof Makame Mbarawa told the Huawei Clouds Conference in Dar es Salaam this week, according to PC Tech Magazine. It will be built in the Kijitonyama suburb of Dar es Salaam’s Kinondoni District.

Ambitions for East Africa
“This will be the best centre for ICT and IT industry across East Africa,” said Prof Mbarawa. Construction is due to start in July, and the center will have high-tech infrastructure to host services from government and business, including telecoms companies.
Prof Mbarawa hopes that the center will connect to neighbouring Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Rwanda, and serve businesses there.
“Cellular network companies will soon no longer depend on other country’s data centres thanks to this centre, which will also be used by other East African countries,” said the minister, according to Tanzania’s Daily News.
It will have fast fiber connectivity, will be independent of Tanzania’s electric grid, said Prof Mbarawa, relying on solar power and batteries.
At the same event, the Tanzanian government signed an agreement with Huawei Tanzania, making the Chinese company an ICT development adviser to the country.
Huawei has been in Tanzania for 17 years, and the country has a good IT market and favourable conditions to become a local ICT hub, said the Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania, Lv Youqing.

Flexenclosure provides eCentre for Vodacom Tanzania
9 May 2014 Updated: 9 May 2014 16:21 By Sharon Everitt

Modular data center developer Flexenclosure will provide network operator Vodacom Tanzania – a subsidiary of Vodafone Group UK – with an eCentre energy center module after its previous energy center was damaged in a fire last August.

The new eCentre system has been custom-designed and fully configured for Vodacom and will be deployed at its main switching center in the Kwale district of the country’s capital Dar es Salaam in July.

Flexenclosure said the modular eCentre has been designed to be energy efficient and easy to expand, as well as being fast to deploy.

It said the energy center in the new facility will be divided into separate rooms and fire zones for increased redundancy.

Flexenclosure said in the eventuality of another incident, such as the previous fire, Vodacom Tanzania’s customers will not lose their services.

And to further secure, trouble-free operation, a dat center infrastructure management (DCIM) system will be used for remote management of the eCentre.

Vodacom Tanzania’s managing director Rene Meza said uptime is important to provide customers with world-class service.

“By installing Flexenclosure’s energy centre solution, we’re confident that we will never again suffer a network outage like the one we had last year.”

Last August Vodacom Mozambique installed a 126 sq m modular eCentre35m above ground on a helipad at its regional office in the heart of Maputo which houses its mission-critical data and telecom equipment.

Last September, the company ordered 12 prefabricated data centers for its primary switching center just outside of the capital.

DCD Intelligence released a report that investigates the costs of modular builds versus those of traditional data center designs. You can view the report here.

Master Power Technologies (MPT), a company founded in South Africa, specializes in quality backup power solutions where uptime-(time during which a machine, especially a computer, is in operation) is essential. They concentrate on the supply, installation and after sales servicing of a comprehensive range of engineered power solutions. The company identifies and creates solutions for businesses throughout Africa that enables them to increase availability and reliability while saving money and improving efficiency. They have several customers ranging from telecom and banking to mining and heavy industry.

One such customer is Tanzania’s Tigo, who selected MPT to design, manufacture and install a new data center. The job involves project managing the entire procedure and managing the building structure for the data center.
MPT provided an independent, self-reliant data center created from different units, hence why they managed to obtain the tender from Tigo to design, build, and implement a number of news data centers throughout its operating countries such as Rwanda, Senegal and Chad. The project provided by MPT will involve a completely independent power management solution which wouldn’t necessitate use of Tanzania’s national electricity to operate fully.
The project is said to require a 5-module data center, with a sixth module to ensure backup power. The modules were made in 250 m2 containers, while the backup power required a 50 m2 container. These were created by the MPT’s head office in South Africa, which were then taken apart and shipped to Tanzania, for reassembling.
All containers also enjoy a full security solution, which comes with fire detection, intrusion alarms and surveillance cameras.
The overall package is created to be efficient yet cost effective when providing control and monitoring of power. The package created can be used for a multiple functions such as battery management, generator control, and building management.
As such the new data centers with state of the art power management tools will help grow Tigo’s network expansion, while also providing resources for other requirements needed. Also an advantage is that spare data centers can be rented out to other companies. The success rate of the data centers may lure Tigo, into possible future negotiations to install further data centers.

Tigo Tanzania announced to expand its product portfolio and start delivering more value-added services and business solutions such as cloud services and ICT managed services under a single portfolio.
Its acting Managing Director Simon Karikari said they start to build the capacity two and half years ago by investing heavily on infrastructure and by last week their fibre connectivity almost covered the entire country. “We have invested for the future…the business future looks bright.
The GDP is growing, inflation at single digit, (thus) business will flourish and need connectivity,” Mr Karikari told reporters in Dar es Salaam over the weekend. Mid this year, Tigo announced a further investment of 70 million US dollars in the next 12 months to upgrade its network. This is on top of another 75 million US dollars invested in the past year.
The telecom said the fund earmarked for transforming and improving outreach of 3G and 4G broadband. “At the moment we are the market leader in Dar es Salaam…we want to leverage our 4G service to corporate clients as well,” Mr Karikari said.
The 70 million US dollars investment announced mid-this year geared to adding 260 2G networks sites in these rural areas, bringing the total to 2,700.
With support from fibre cable, the telcom has 1,500 towers supporting 3G, and 300 sites in major cities supporting 4G. The fibre infrastructure currently spans 2,294 kilometers with 22 district headquarters as part of the national ICT backbone footprint.
Tigo Tanzania’s acting Chief Business Officer Mr Hugh Sonn said the total business solution branded business to business (B2B) and would offer all inclusive tele-services including data storage.
“We put together bundled solutions that combine in-demand value added products alongside mobile, broadband and internet services at high speed connectivity” he said. Mr Sonn said they offer tailored technology solution package to SMEs, entrepreneur or corporate at high security level.
“We are offering high secured private internet service with specific security to protect the system including data storing services,” Mr Sonn said.
Tigo Tanzania Chief Technology Information Officer, Jerome Albou, said the telecom has a state-of-art data center to support cloud infrastructure at Salasala in Kinondoni District.
“The center is modular data centre and designed under parallel backup system, N+N, which operates under the back of preventive maintenance,” he said. The TA3 designed data center has a downturn of 99.98 per cent and 100 racks but could be upgraded to reach 800 racks capacity.
