First things first.I don't want to believe, I want to know.

Having said that, at some level, belief is inescapable. If at all I am planning for my meetings at work tomorrow, that is belief already. I do not know that I will see tomorrow for sure.

So, to your question.

Let us look at it logically.

Up to now, it is estimated that, the Milky Way Galaxy, our local galaxy, has between 100 and 400 billion stars. Most stars have more than one planets. Ours has 8 (9 if you count Pluto).

Lets just say on average each star has 3 planets.

Lets take a conservative figure of 200 billion stars per galaxy.

That is about 600 billion planets just on our local galaxy, the Milky Way.

Lets be even more conservative, and scale down that figure for planets.Lets say there are 100 billion planets in the zone that is life friendly.

Let's take that as the average figure for a galaxy, after all, the Milky Way Galaxy is a very average galaxy, from size to number of stars.

So if we want to figure out the number of life friendly planets in the universe, we will have to multiply 100 billion with the number of galaxies.

So, how many galaxies are there in the observable Universe?

According to the best currently available models, there are at least 100 billion galaxies in the Universe.

So to get the number of life friendly planets in the Universe we multiply 100 billion (number of life friendly planets in an average galaxy) with 100 billion (lower estimate of number of galaxies in the observable universe).

That is, 100,000,000,000 x 100,000,000,000 =10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

That is 1 followed by 22 zeros planets.That is ten sextillion planets that are potentially habitable.

If we are a pure chance occurence that cannot be repeated in ten sextillion occurence, I will find that very odd indeed.

Someone said the universe is not only stranger than we suppose, it is stranger than we can suppose.

I will not be surprised to find out there are intelligent life forms out there, but I won't be surprised to find out that there are things as different from life as life is different from the non living world.

I remember back in the early 1990s, I used to go to the American Library at Peugeot House. They had some very good astronomy books. In one of them I learned about a gentleman by the name of Frank Drake. He came up with an equation to estimate the number of intelligence civilizations that we could communicate with using radio technology in our galaxy.

But up to know Mother Earth is the only planet that support life.. The Drake Equation is so convinving but to me I take it as just a guess work.

Nassa waliwahi kutuma sign to other planets. Waliweka ujumbe kuutuma into space hoping that if there are some intelligent beings out there must get the message and answer it.

The late Professor Stephen Hawking is convinced that this is a bad idea, that there is a likelihood of encountering a more advanced civilization, and experience has given us a track record of showing that every time a lesser civilization encounters a technologically advanced civilization, the lesser civilization suffers (think slavery, colonialism etc).

I think it is better to listen for broadcasts of intelligence signs.

In any case, we are too late, we have been broadcasting our positions into outer space since the first radio and TV broadcasts. That is around 1906.

That is to say, anyone in the range of 113 light years of earth can pick up our radio/ television signals.
